I see Bobby Hunter is having (or had) a nice showing in the Hard Times event. He must be getting a little up in years. Anyone know how old he is? Mid fifties? I suppose he's still living in Carson City.

Doc

i'm not sure how old he is but father time has been very good to him. i think he's either moving to chicago or has already moved to craft cues.

I saw him at the 14.1 Worlds in New Brunswick, NJ last year...played slow, but real nice.

If this info is correct. he would be 54.

Bobby Hunter grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan, home of the late, great Harold Worst. He started playing pool in 1969 at the age of 16, a few years too late, unfortunately to get a chance to see Worst play.

he is a great guy, i bought a Joss West cue from him in the 80's when he had his pool room up and going good, i wish him the best.

Bob's a great guy and a straight shooter in all ways. He also makes fine cues. If he tells you your cue is coming in six months, you can count on it. He doesn't have a devious bone in his body.

Years ago I sent Bobby back East to play in some tournaments and he did real well. I vaguely recall him winning one of them, beating some great player (Buddy?) in the finals. Unlike some players who will remain nameless, Bobby called me after the tournament and asked me if I wanted him to send a check or use Western Union. That blew me away, that he called the day after the tournament and was concerned about repaying me. I told him just to wait until he gets home and we can settle up then. And he did exactly that.

One other story about Bobby I'll share. When he and his wife Julie opened a poolroom with Kelly Simpson in Nevada nearly 20 years ago, they were short of money. They called me and asked for a loan. With only a promise and nothing on paper, I sent them a considerable amount of money. Bob promised to repay me in one year.

A year later he calls me and tells me the check is on the way, and it was. With interest.

A great guy that makes great cues.

The pool world could use a few more like him.

You're right on about Hunter. A quality guy, and lethal on the green baize. I always wanted to buy one of his poles, but didn't have the bucks. That's interesting that you helped him get started in NV. He had a real nice room in Carson City, but there's probably not a lot of pool action in Nevada's capitol.

So I guess he's 54, and has relocated to The Beard's area to continue cue making. Thanks, guys.

Bobby is a class act. Super nice guy and great player. He built me a beautiful cue about 2 years ago.

Ive met him a couple times in return visits to grand rapids. I also got to play with a couple of his cues and they are amazing.

I couldn't agree more..If there were a couple of million more like Bobby at the top, pool wouldn't be in the shape it's in..

Jay - I thought that you would have seen Bobby Hunter in Manila last year.
He played in all the qualifying events but didn't make it through. But he hung around the One Side club with his stakehorse and matched up with quite a few players there. But he must have left town before you arrived.

I did see him at One Side. He was in action every day with someone.

not too bad for a former world 14.1 champion huh...

Said he was shooting slowly that day I saw him...not poorly...

And yes, I was aware I was watching a World Champion Straight Pool shooter playing his game!

Bob Hunter just left back to Carson City To finish some new cues with new designs. In July he will be in New Jersey for the 14.1 tournament Just got him is tickets and entry covered. After the Tournament he is off to Chicago around the July 20 is the best date for him to go. He is still making arangements for all his tooling and misc stuff to get there safely as we all know it it's still open to change @ anytime.
