body alignment

simple version

what is the best way to get my body aligned for the shot?

I may be repeating what was said at the other end of the links but the simple version is align your cue stick with the shot, align your body around it. Something I don't do when I get sloppy and I usually find myself paying for it. Most of us use one stance when we have plenty of room, others when we are stretching. All stances should abide by that one rule though, align the stick and then the body around it.

your lead leg needs to be planted on the line of the shot.

ie right handed right leg, left handed left leg.

goofy footed

Lee,

Borrowing a term from some of the extreme sports, I just tried a quick stance with my legs goofy footed, right handed with the right leg slightly forward. A huge change in body position from my right leg a little back stance. Didn't feel near as evil as I thought it would though.

However I think you still mean for the body to be fairly square with the left leg slightly in front of the right in the final stance for a right handed player or am I mistaken?

yes thats correct hugh, if you stand upright with your arms next to your body, they align perfectly with the inside of your heel, we are built like this.

by aligning to the shot like this we are perfectly aligned to the target, and cue straight through this line.

My opinion, FWIW. There is only one key part of the body that you must align, the rest is stance, which must be comfortable for the alignment.

That part, is the head. If you line up, lets say your chin, is on the shot line as you view it from standing, then step naturally down into that line (stance), maintaining the chin placement on the shot line. Bring the cue down on the same aiming line with your chin, and step forward into your stance. You should almost be able to shoot from there with your eyes closed and still make close contact to your aiming point on lthe object ball.

Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

I have just this week changed to a snooker stance because I needed to have more consistence in my game and so far it is working for me. It was a bit uncomfortable at first but I soon found the right position for me and it has made a world of difference. There have been a number of articles and threads on this but just in case you missed out on them here is one for starters. http://www.fcsnooker.co.uk/basics/the_stance/stance.htm also look to Lee Brett and ShootingArts because they are on the right track. Thank you Lee Brett and ShootingArts.

no problem i teach this to all my students and they see a huge difference in their game. glad to be of help.

Find a player with similar structure as you and try mimicing their. You may find something they do that can make you feel more solid.

Many thanks but . . .

I appreciate the kind words but I just wrote pretty much all I know about the snooker stance in a few sentences. When Lee and I get fairly close together I am going to hook up with him to learn a lot more though.

I've seen the great Danny Harriman do this a thousand times. Face your shot, lift the cue tip straight up in the air, then bring it back down for the shot. You will feel uncomfortable if you don't come down in the correct position. Do it over and see how you feel. After a time it becomes automatic.

I learned to stand square to the line of the shot, with my chin in line with the aim line. Lower the cue into that line and place my back foot so that the cue passes over the toes. Place the lead foot just off the aim line and lower the body.
