Borana on the Cover of Inside Pool

I think she's very attractive, and if she can shoot pool and is making the rounds on the circuit, then that's pretty cool.

The debate about her being on the cover of IP reminds me of that lady with the big sweat glands from Florida that everybody seems to enjoy reading about.

Women seem to be the only thing that's keeping pool with one foot in the door -- let me take that back -- one toe in the door of mainstream American when it comes to sports.

If she sells magazines, giving pool more exposure, then I'm all for it.

I really did beat Nick Varner in a game of 9-ball, and I have a T-shirt to prove it. Do you think IP will consider giving me a little recognition on their back cover? I can't run three balls today and I don't have big sweat glands, but I can hold a cue! :grin-square:

She looks better here than on the cover. Inside Pool needs to change photographers.

I'll shoot her for free... seriously

I have played Borana once on the Tri-State tour, it was the the tournament that she finished 3rd. Please believe me when I say I ESCAPED with a victory. One shot here or there and the match would have had a different outcome, I seem to remember a combo on the 9 (in the side pocket) that she missed. Today, I have no doubt that she would drain it. If you are an A player and you draw her (handicapped or not) you are in for a REAL fight. Her knowledge of the game is second to none.

YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!

I like it....

I think the cover of every magazine should have a gorgeous woman on it!! It's just good marketing!

Ship it!

When Cristina is on the cover I'll subscribe! :D

I think it's a great article. To get it out of the way, yes, she is gorgeous, no way to overlook that.

But what rings true to me is the fact that she, like most of us on here, also works a day job and plays pool because she loves the game, and unfortunately can't do it full time, yet. Unlike me she obviously has a much better shot at doing so full time!

Maybe one day...

I don't get why some people get worked up about "why her on the cover, when it should be someone with more resume." It's a profit making magazine fer crying out loud, doing an up and coming dream article. We have enough issues in pool without making mountains out of mole hills. Stop sweating the small stuff I say!

If Borana's attractive image sells copies and perhaps attracts a couple new people into the game, then BooYah I say.

I'd like to see her and Cris matchup, perhaps a TAR undercard. I tried to egg out of Cris if they were a fairly even match and I'd speculate it'd be reasonably close. This is in good part a male dominated sport and these two very attractive and good playing ladies would be very refreshing to watch, would draw more viewers, and I'm sure a few wheels of cheese would be rolling about.

TAR Match!!!!

I don't know about TAR, but the Bigtruck Show would be interested! ;)

Wouldn't you need WPBA approval first?

I would be interested also.

If they want to get together in New York, I'd be happy to cover it. If it is done by anyone else, I will be glad to show it as a special on go4pool.net.

Thanks,
Jim

The WPBA just announced new streaming and sanctioning rules at a meeting yesterday. They would certainly have to be consulted with.

And what might their critical decision criteria be?

Sidenote: people own Inside Pool and see their trends, financial statements and readership #'s. They may be in a very difficult financial position given the economy and the fact that print as a whole is a shrinking market (the internet playing a big part in that).

So the IP powers that be say "we sell 10% more issues when we have a pretty up and comer on the cover vs the <insert less attractive player that won last month's big tourney here>. Of the 10%, half are first time buyers and suscribers." Maybe that extra 10% in sales gets them over breakeven where incremental costs are only @ 35% and lets them breathe a little better.

It's their biz and they are fighting. They make the best educated decisions they can.

Doubt it, since neither are WPBA touring pros.

I'll agree wit hteh one post about Inside Pool putting a fairly attractive (Poolroom standards) amateur player on the cover. Inside Pool seems to cover more amateur events, and this plays into their niche.

I'll also give Borana the benefit of the doubt; while I don't know her, other than seeing her at a local tourney, if she doesn't get an overblown ego over this, then it's all good.

Well, lets face it. Regardless of how people say she plays, we all know girls that play better then her, who would NEVER ever get a cover.

Like, how bad would sales drop if someone was on the cover that was say...NOT so nice to look at?

People are dismissive because they want her to have a certain proven track record to have EARNED her way into the magazine.
Which a part of me understands, cause in terms of accomplishments, there are other girls who have done more where they could focus on pool, and not the journey.

Believe me, i'll be the first to say that she hasn't done anything really spectacular in women's pool to have earned her way into the magazine as a result of it. Hence my initial comments, and i will stand by those comments.
She is not tearing it up.

BUT, on the flip side, the article isn't saying that she's tearing it up.
It's focusing more on her pool journey and how it came about, and is an excellent article.

But i've said it before.
People like success, but don't like successful people.

It's very true.
When someone gets a taste of something good, your always gonna have bitter envious jealous people who are all bent cause it wasn't them or cause they don't think it was earned.
So considering this is the pool world, you can multiply that number by a factor of 10.

To be honest, if Borana has the opportunity to market the daylights out of herself, she should jump on those opportunities.
What is she supposed to do? Apologize for getting the cover?
Is she supposed to feel bad cause someone else didn't get the opportunity?
Forget that garbage.
There is no playing nicey nice. You do what you have to for YOU.

As far as her pool game is concerned, we'll see if that pans out into greatness or not.
As far as the cover, i'll be the first to say, that i'd rather have some good eye candy to look at instead of some TANK that makes me lose my appetite, and while Borana doesn't really do it for me, she is way better to look at then some of the other girls that are out there.
Believe me, if i had the choice of Borana vs some APA fattie on the cover of a magazine, um, SHOCKER, Borana is gonna get that cover.

I'm not a WPBA touring pro yet, but may be after the next WPBA event in Florida. Either way though, as of your first WPBA event (exempt or non-exempt), the WPBA owns your competition media rights. You sign off on this in your first event. I assume this is done in case you make a TV round then they avoid any legal mess with being able to air those matches on ESPN but I might be wrong.

Regardless, the media rights issue is something I am always mindful off and usually contact the WPBA if I'm ever unsure about it. I believe it's a pretty nominal fee and may even be waived if it is a charity event.

I'm sure Borana and I would be interested in doing a match. We've never played each other in a tournament so it would be fun.

BTW, she's going to be coming Texas to go with me to the next OBCues tour stop in Arlington next weekend.

Where's the cover with Sarah Rousey??? That would be a much better read about a woman player. She is a "for sure" up and comer, has made it to the ladies tour, is capable of winning there, has overcome adversity (diabetes and being really short), breaks better than most men, gambles, and oh yeah... she's cute to boot.....

One can play a little, one can play alot.....

Got it. Thanks for the insight.
