Borana on the Cover of Inside Pool

OK, I am not bashing anyone, even though my first post may had sounded a little harsh. I guess some people might think that I am "narrow minded", but I like to think I am "Old Fashioned".

I just think there was more worthy faces that could had taken the cover. For example, I see one of the Big Article in the October issue was about Oscar Dominguez - by the way a young AMERICAN pool player - winning his first major PRO title. By winning Turning Stone Classic, Oscar became the #1 US player by the BCA points list outright! He is now #2 after points adjustment, which at any time a player may drop their worst finish from the calculation. Well, at this time, Oscar is a strong contender for a spot in Mosconi Cup for Team USA, which will finalize with the points of US 9 Ball Open. Shouldn't that had been a cover story? If I am not mistaken, Oscar isn't one of those players who has all the time in the world to work on his game. He works full time with his dad as a table mechanic.

** Hey LA people help me out, but isn't Oscar going to college as well? I thought I heard he couldn't go to a major tourney because he had finals or something once. (I maybe wrong on this statement - so please correct me..)

What about the Galveston Classic that Inside Pool exclusively covered for the entire duration? Shouldn't they (promoters) had gotten a nod?

I know it's Inside Pool's right to put who they want on the cover. But just saying what's been squeaking in my head.

I know sex sells and I do agree, Borana's cover is much easier on the eyes than some (other???) pool players. Cover was tasteful and easily accentuated her beauty without overdoing. She could had been on a cover of Cosmo or some beauty mags on grocery stands.

Many agreed having a beautiful player on the cover will help increase the sale of IPM, but how do you sell more mags when it's only available by subscription? Most of their customers are already subscribers...

What am I missing here? Like someone ordering individual magazine on line?

Just asking.

See BB, this is the thing, i am split on these statements.

Gail G's statement is a relative observation.
For all we know, Borana might not have been able to HOLD a cue, much less pocket a ball when she first started, so if she managed to improve from a Tomato Can, to someone that can actually play ok, that IS a lot of improvement.
The only clear way to know is it you saw her from day 1 till now, and i'll be the first to say that the learning curve is different for everyone.
Some, it might take years to improve just a little, while others, it happens relatively quickly.

Exactly right SS. I made my comment based on being friends with B since nearly the beginning of her introduction to pool. If I'm not mistaken, she didn't know what a cue was before 2006 and she first starting competing on the Tri-State in 2007 as a D and was recently just raised to a B!

As for deserving the cover. Everyone's gonna have a different opinion on earning it, deserving it, sex sells, marketing strategy, good for pool, bad, etc. To each his own. I'd only opine that Borana not be bashed for IP's decision. She saw an opportunity and took it. If someone doesn't agree with it, they should take it up with Inside Pool and let B enjoy her limelight.

GG1,

WOW, Borana did make a vast improvement and hope she stays on the track. She seems to have natural talents along with determination - such a rare combination which we all as pool lovers desire... I know how hard is to improve.

I didn't mean to come across as bashing Borana, personally, but just stating my opinion. Like you say, everyone's free to their opinion, right? You yourself once had an "issue" and you decided to voice your opinion here, instead of going to the source...

Maybe like you and many others, we all just want to discuss and be heard. Someone started a post "Here" about her cover and many followed to discuss weather they agree or not.

No worries Sunny, I didn't think your post was a dig at B at all --- as you clearly pointed out, IP made the decision and that's what you question -- in general, people have acknowledged this separation with a surprising maturity!

And for the record, Oscar would have been a GREAT cover choice as well.

Agreed. It sucks that she is the butt of the discussion when she did nothing wrong. I can see why people could take it the wrong way but regardless, she is only doing what anyone would do.

Its almost like that kid in highschool who's grandparents are millionaires and everyone knows they are set for life. You are jealous and its always on your mind when you are going to your $4.75/hour job everyday. Buts its not that kids fault he is wealthy. What Im saying is, its obvious why she is on the cover and not a random B player from Iowa, but shes not going to turn something like that down.

Im sure she knew she would catch a little heat from this and she took it well based on her post. She seems to have thick skin... she will need it.

First off, congratulations to Borana. Secondly, what is the big deal? Inside Pool is a magazine about pool and Borana is a professional pool player. It makes perfect sense to me.

Now, if only my issue would come. I'm still waiting on it.

What issue is this one? My last issue was September with Kim on the cover.

No, thats exactly what the big deal was about. She is an amateur and people question if it makes sense to put a B player on the cover.

I don't care who's on the cover, just don't misrepresent facts if you do.
They didn't, so who cares.

OK, so they did an article on the "aspiring" professional pool player and chose her. Sorry, I just don't have an issue with it. Now, when the Ayatollah Khomeini made the cover of Time Magazine as "Man of the Year" in 1979, that I had a problem with.

I am ugly and can't draw my ball. I don't think that JR would ever put me on the cover of IP - although I do have dreams.

Okay dainese919, I showed you mine. Now show me yours.
You can PM me it if you like.

I bet if I wrote an article for Inside Pool it would sell more copies than Borana on the cover. Any takers? Unfortunately won't happen - JR banned me from his defunct, inflated statistical forum site some time ago.

Borana's playing

I was at an open 10 ball tournament on Friday at Master Billiards where Borana was playing. She was on the losers side and I know she doesn't do this all the time yet, but in a race to 4 she ran the table 3 of the 4 games to win 4 to 2. I think that she is nicely on her way.

IP did cover the Galveston event and it will be in the next issue. Since the event ended on Sept. 20th magazines typically print a few weeks ahead of the publish date. I know their ad submission deadline is the first of the month on the previous month, so most of the content for the October issue was to be submitted before Galveston even began.

I first heard about Borana being on the cover in early September and thru conversations with JR, I believe part of the reason IP put her on the cover is that they received a lot of inquiries about her and comments from people interested in knowing more about her.

Borana and I speak about pool on a regular basis and only half of it has anything to do with what's happening on the table. Managing the business aspect of your pool career is just as important as working on your game and she understands how to do both. Let's face it, it's pretty damn hard to make a living on tournament payouts so for someone that wants to do this as their profession you need to work hard at all aspects of your career, manage yourself as a comodity. Believe it or not, there are plenty of pretty regional players that don't get the same type of exposure or coverage as Borana because they aren't doing the same things she is doing to promote herself. She's strategic in who she affiliates herself with and is professional in the way she carries herself. There is nothing wrong with her taking advantage of her opportunities.

So when will we see you grace the cover of IP? Of course I'll want my copy autographed :)
