Boston IPT Qualifier

Jose Garcia is coming on strong, beat Foldes and just crushed Sander Tot, 10-3. From what I've heard and seen, couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Linda, I see what you mean...that is weird. How can it be totally random when the names are being alphabetized? My poor brain is churning (sounds like a 1950's Moped) and I can't figure this one out. I thought the 1-pocket champs (Joiner, Frost, Richeson, et al) would do really well in the qualifiers. They're hanging in there, but...so much for my theory that great 1-hole players can play anything requiring strategy and gamesmanship. When you've got a bunch of great pool players, guess it doesn't matter what your specialty is.

Yes, I am really rooting for him big time, very nice guy and has put in his time in the sport, would be nice to see it pay off for him:)

Did you guys notice that Gary Abood, The unknown Hustler, is in the tournament and will play Ronnie Wiseman in the second round if he wins his first match?
LOL, here's a better pic of him....

What's up with Sparky Ferrell????? He forfeited out of the qualifier at the DCC (never showed up). Then today he forgeited out of the the MA qualifier. (lost the 1st round & never went back).

Unless someone has money to burn, I don't understand forking out $4000 just to turn around and forfeit. I don't know Sparky so I can't begin to venture a guess.

LOL, I wish I had that kind of money!! :p

I think Sparky could best be described as a very likable rogue with great pool talent, great appetite for life, and would have fit in perhaps more easily with Fats, Cornbread, Ronnie and the rest of the "Johnston City gang". As we Shamrocks are wont to say, "sometimes the Irish comes out in him".

I saw him at the DCC and while I didn't meet him, I saw him action quite a bit. Sounds like your "Johnston City Gang" analogy could be pretty accurate. ;)

Who are ...

This Chris Melling and Runinngen that are running through the brackets and winning pretty big?

Runningen

A couple years ago Runningen was both the VNEA and the BCA juniors champ, something that had never been done before, winning both juniors in the same year. He is also the current MN ACS state champ. The guy does know how to play.

Heard he ran 7 racks against Luat but Luat is contesting it and saying he only ran 6, $5,000 for 7, $0 for 6. Going to have a tape review of the match to find out although I'm trying to figure out why Luat is contesting it. Maybe I would too if I just got my *** kicked by a skinny creature that no one had ever heard of.

Bummer

At the Hard Times qualifier there was no admission. You could come and go as you pleased the only thing was that if you went out for a smoke you probably lost your viewing spot. During the qualifier they had 2 Golf games going on on the other side as well as action on a few of the tables not being used for the qualifier. Everything was run as usual with no gouging. Hats off to Ken, the owner. I got there at 9:30 AM on Sunday , grabbed my spot in the bleachers with several bottle of water and didn't get up until the last match was over. New bladder record for me!

Santos just lost to Tot 7-10.

Does anyone else feel for Santos? He's the only player in this situation...that he was actually picked as part of the original 150, but he still has to qualify because he was in the Philippines during the mandatory meeting in Orlando. But you got to ask the question...why didn't he just hitch a plane and make the meeting??

I really hope he works his way up the loser's side and gets his card...again.

Many players didn't go to the meeting.

I'm not sure what Santos did or didn't do, but it seems he didn't reply to emails or try to contact the IPT when they were trying to get members to confirm their participation.

As 148 all managed to do this, I'd have to assume he was lazy. And lazy makes you lose in business.

alphabetical is random under specific conditions

I just took a look at the brackets. Anyone else notice the draw on the first half of the A bracket is alphabetical??? That is weird!

if this is what they did in fact do, i think that was a big mistake.... the two problems with this would be:

players: if the players didn't know about it before they put up the money i guess alphabetizing would be fine (assuming the people who made this decision aren't biased). but, if players knew about alphabetizing, they could obviously weigh in their heads if it was worth it to enter based on the bracket they would be in and the potential pool of players. they could then decide if they should enter ot not. this scenario is obviously not ok.

people who made this decision: it is possible that they (tournament directors) could want certain players to make it over others. alphabetizing the draw could put the players they want on the tour in a favorable bracket.

i can see how they would think alphabetical would be ok becasue its as good as random if the above two scenarios aren't a problem. however, there's no way for the people putting up $2000 to know this for a fact and it definitely was not prudent of then to do this. they should not do it again, there is too much money at stake for too many people for the tournament director to be making unprofessional decisions.

What a great event in all aspects. From the quality (and dress) of the players to the professionalism of the IPT Staff to the atmosphere of the venue...classy, classy, classy.

There wasn't a dull moment tonight as I watched Joyner win 2 B-side matches, Frost put away one of his own, and Wu pull through 10-8. I also caught a glimpse of DCC Banks Runner-Up Jason Kirkwood, who advanced in his losers' bracket match. Sambajon came from behind to eliminate Foldes by running the last 3 racks of the match; he'll continue to be a force. The English contingent is out in numbers and playing well. Watch out for Ruberto too.

Winners' side matches of note tomorrow include Saez v. Abood and Engert v. Garcia.

It's a real treat to see such high caliber play. These are literally some of the best players on the globe. The action is bound to heat up after hours as more players are eliminated, which is just as much of a draw. $10 is not at all unreasonable.

Oh, and try the prime rib - one of the best pool hall steaks you'll ever eat.

I got it ...

Since noone answered, I went out and found out who he is.

Who is this Chris Melling?

Chris is an all round cue sport player from Keighley, England.

He has won the small table UK 8 ball World Championship twice (recorded for SKY TV) and various other Pro 8 ball TV events.

He has recently joined (for the 2nd occassion), the World Snooker tour for 2006/2007 and has hit a few 147 clearances.

He got to the last 16 of the 9 ball World Championship in Cardiff defeating top players along the way........and he came through the qualifiers to get there in the 1st place.

His background since he was young was UK 8 ball pool and snooker (like most of the British players competing).

Chris has the cueing ability and self belief that he can succeed in any cue sport........and he knows the patterns in 8 ball pool extremely well.........his potting is awesome.

Karl Boyes from Manchester is another (UK 8 ball player) player who is doing really well in the past few qualifiers......I think he finished 7th and 9th at the previous two and is in the winners section after 3 fine wins (10-1, 10-4, 10-7) in this qualifier.

These lads are just a few of the British contingent playing in the qualifiers who are unknown in the USA.

There are quite a few others who are already part of the IPT and will cause some big upsets in the near future......especially with the harder playing conditions (tight pockets and slow nap cloth).

Whoever does come through this weekend to qualify will be very good players and worthy of their spots.

Joyner ran 7 racks in a row for $5000.
Mike Sigel won both his matches to get a total of $4000.

Did they change the rack count for that $5k bonus from six to seven?

Go Cliff! That $5k will cover 2.5 qualifier entry fees for him... this is #3 for him, correct?

The pockets on these tables are bigger than the pockets in other qualifiers so they raised the rack count.

I can't remember if Cliff played in the qualifier at the DCC... I don't think he did. I believe Atlanta was his first which would make this his 3rd.

:)

Has been running over people on the one loss side. Looks like he is really getting down to business.

Some good matches going on Frost/Luat (1l), Melling/Kiamco, Engert/Garcia, Breedlove/Hjorliefson, Saez/Abood, Runningen/Boyles and others. Wu is playing Reimering right now. Peach is playing Kirkwood, Tot and Singh, and Joyner is playing Takenaka.

Frost is out ...

Scott Frost lost and is out. Breedlove and Abood will play on winners side, along with Lining and Boyles, and Majid and Kiamco so far. Wu won on 1 loss side. Joyner and Takenaka still going on.
