Boston IPT Qualifier

my 2-hour experience...

Just took 2 hours out of my day to check out the qualifier in person (while my daughter was taking a nap).

I witnessed Kiamco win over Melling, Abood take out Saez, Sambajon dispatch Knight, and Wu defeat Reimering. I also saw Sigel win both of his matches...and the stories are true, he really knows how to talk it up!

Couple things that I noticed...

Melling uses a snooker cue while playing.

Sambajon is smaller than I thought. He's probably 5'0'' and barely 110 lbs. Yet, he breaks as hard as anyone there. Pound for pound, he's probably the hardest breaker in the world.

Sigel complains about everything and anything.

Abood is a sharp-looking fellow.

Kiamco does not look like a pool player...he looks like more of an uncle of mine.

Wu isn't as large as I thought he would be.

All in all, it was a great 2 hours. I took a picture of Wu and a group picture of the Filipino players. I'll try to post it when I'm not chasing my daughter around the place. Hopefully she'll sleep early tonight so I can go back in the evening. Too bad I'd have to fork over an $10 (that's crap!).

I predicted earlier in the week that one of the UK players would probably get their card at this qualifier and they are certainly making a go of it. The Canadian Hjorliefson is having another great showing and Wu is still alive, hopefully Wu gets his card for the benefit of the IPT.

P.S. does anyone know why Warren Kiamco was posted on the brackets as a Japanese player? Was this just a mistake?

This flag thing has got me energized. With all my trips around the world when I was a sailor, I feel I'm THE person to take on the responsibility as official IPT "Flag Man" to ensure this utter disgrace does not reoccur (and to beat the admission fee). IPT: just E-mail me with your best offer (or bribe to get rid of me). Anyway, another great tournement; sure wish they could video stream part of these things. The Filipino contingent is making a strong showing with Luat, Kiamko and Lining still in the hunt. Gotta pull for Robb Saez and George Breedlove.

Maybe ...

Wu is learning something after getting beat out from 2 IPT Qualifiers, that he still has things to learn...

Who's everyone rooting for now? I would like to see George and Robb win.

George Breedlove
Antonio Lining

Furuta Kazou
Warren Kiamco

Gary Abood
Karl Boyes

Robb Saez
Ramil Gallego

From that list I'd like to see George Breedlove and Karl Boyes make it through. They've proven themselves dedicated and highly competitive in other qualifiers.

That said, I certainly don't wish the others to lose. It must be heartbreaking to come so close and yet so far. Vilmos Foldes who lost 4 times in matches for his card, followed those up with very early exits from the next 2 events. His candle must have burnt out at both ends:(

Kiamco is in the finals on the winners side and Gary Abood has knocked off Santos in the losers side.

That's interesting... I saw Kiamco play at the Tiger Planet Pool Us Open warm up and then again at the US Open.... maybe he was having an off week but I wasn't too impressed with his game. Shawn Putnam beat Warren at both events quite easily. Could've been an off week or maybe he's been practicing... either way, best of luck to him.

Final 6 players

Breedlove (USA) vs Kiamco (Filippino) on winners side

Boyes (England) vs. Kazuo (Japanese)
Saez (USA) vs. Lining (Filippino)

on the 1 loss side.

Good representation from different countries, and about what I would expect.

I think I would have to go for Breedlove and Boyles.

The current matches are being updated rack by rack, very clever.

Current scores:

Winners - Kiamco 6-5 Breedlove
Losers - Saez 4-3 Boyes.
