Break cues?

I have j&j now is it worth getting a ob or something of that sort? What's the diff from one of the cheaper ones compared too say mcdermott or ob or mezz?

It's all in what you like. Ask to break with other peoples cues to get a feel for what's out there. You may find you like your j&j best. Try before you buy. I recommend something with a similar joint to what you shoot with as it may feel better to you.

Don't fall into the trap of cue envy. Play with your J&J, and get used to it. Then you can go around and ask other people politely to try their break cues, and feel for yourself.

I've been scratching a lot on my break its driven me nuts is there perks of a higher dollar break cue? Over my j&j

Scratching on the break is not the cue,it's you.
Now it's in your head that the cue is to blame.
Work through it.
I have an $85 break cue and i rarely scratch.

If you play a lot of 9 ball and 10 ball and you want to level up your game, I would definitely recommend getting a higher end break cue.

Personally I like Mezz PBI more than Predator BK2, but dont like the sonic tip on it.

I really like to try a Denali breaker some time in the future, having missed 2 chances to buy one. the first time I opted for a Mezz PBII, second time I don't have enough cash, but one of my friend wanted to share it with me, but he went against completing the deal bcoz he read something he did not like about G10 pin.

I really hope I can buy one from Bob next time.

Yes play 9 a lot and I know its me not the cue but I'm asking will a higher dollar cue be better? But my breaking is driven me nuts don't matter where I break from

then I would recommend a Mezz, it generates more power than other cues with lesser effort, so you don't have to put max power in it, so accuracy is better, so is control. but I highly recommend a leather tip. the sonic tip is not good for me, hold chalk poorly and way too hard.

I use cortisone cream on my break tip instead of chalk and I rarely scratch too Bruce.

Nah, if yer scratching on the break, chances are, you are not hitting center ball square on.

If you break from the side and are scratching in one of the corner pockets, you aren't hitting the second ball in with the proper English on it.

Just my take on it. When I don't hit center ball, I usually go into the side pocket more times than none.

I almost hate to say it but an expensive break cue won't get you any more balls in the pockets over a 19 or 20 oz bar cue with a decent tip on it.

2 years I used a cheap 35$ break/jump cue with phenolic tip. I sold it and buy a s/h Mezz Power Break II cue. Yes the Mezz break a little better and easy, but it's not a huge difference for me, I'll say it breaks on 20%-30% better than my cheap cue, but it cost 10 times more.
However I never practiced the break shot more than 30 minutes.
My advice is don't look for magic cues, invest your money in practice and yours J&J will be fine.

i'd just stick with the J&J. dollar for dollar they're impossible to beat. if you feel like getting something else go ahead but don't think you'll be getting much of a performance increase

I think you should have a Samsara tip put on,,,or,,,buy an extra shaft with a different tip on it and see what you like better. I have extra J&J shafts and I can put one of my special break tips on and ship it to you for $30.

Yea I think I'm just gonna try new tip see how that goes and most time when I scratch its in the corner pocket on the same end I break from!

That is your skill not the cue. If you keep running into trees in your car, buying a Bently won't help you, you'll just have a higher repair bill.

HOW do you scratch though, right in, or kicked in? Side pockets or corner pockets? I think you started by asking the wrong question, instead of asking "what is a better break cue" you should have asked "I am scratching on the break, how can I fix that".

Stop hitting the cueball with draw, or maybe a mm or two bellow center at most. I don't like breaking with a phenolic tip, a hard leather tip gives me a LOT more control. I have team mates that offer to let me use their Predator and such break cues all the time, but I do better with just a house stick. Especially when using something like the magic rack.

It definitely isn't the cue. I had a J&J and it was one of my favorite sticks. I currently use a McDermott "Lucky" cue that I got for $40.00 and it breaks perfectly too.

Just work on your break and slowly work up to a new break cue, but the stick won't make your break any better.

Well I know the cue won't make me better what I was trying too ask is if one of these other cues do anything better idk I'm just gonna try diff tip my breakk cue has a soft tip on it ever since my hard one broke since then my break has been crap! What tips do u guys think I should go with? What's the tip I've heard about guys breaking cue balls with lol?

I break with a cheap Action cue. I have two shafts: One has a one-piece phenolic ferrule/tip. The other has a G10 ferrule and a Samsara tip.

The phenolic tip is absolutely solid. I feel like I get maximum energy transfer, along with a very satisfying TINK!!! sound. However, as others have said here, it can be hard to control.

The G10/Samsara breaks pretty solid, too, but I have more control over the spin that ends up on the cue ball. Ideally, I would choose to have zero spin in the cue ball.

As for what's happening when you scratch on your break, my guess would be that you are maybe lining up correctly, but veering off on the final forward stroke. If you're right-handed, you will probably be pulling your grip hand away from your body slightly as you deliver the cue. This makes the tip contact the cue ball a little left of center, causing the cue ball to squirt to the right, resulting in it hitting the head ball on the right, then generally rebounding towards either the right corner or side pocket.

Get a measle ball if you can. Watch for spin on the cue ball immediately after the break (if it stays on the table). Don't adjust after every break, but try to see if there is a pattern (i.e. usually some left spin on the cue ball).

Slow down your break, lighten your grip, and really focus on a center ball hit, and solid, head on contact with the head ball in the rack. Once you are doing that consistently at a slower speed, you can gradually work your way up to a faster speed.

This may also be caused indirectly by the soft tip. It won't feel as solid, and won't break as nicely as a good hard tip, so you might be overcompensating by really trying hard to smack the cue ball with all your might. That could be why you're scratching more now. Just a thought.

Probably my best advice is to skip all of my advice, and go spend a few bucks on lessons from a qualified instructor. It will definitely be worth it!

Hope this helps!
