break tip- phenolic vs leather

Leather, being that I want to control the cue ball on the break not just hammer it. You can't control the cue as well with a phenolic or g10 tip

I agree control is better with a leather tip. And control is what makes a good breaker.

try a samsara j/b tip....it's a leather tip for control, but very hard to get the power of phenolic.

They are all correct Marv.

A leather tip offers much better control. If you can average at least 1 ball per break with a leather tip ... stay with it.

If you can't, a phenolic will crush the rack in comparison. It's downsides are that not only will a phenolic offer less control, it is also much more prone to miscues as it doesn't hold chalk as well.

The best compromise I have found is a Picone (SP?) White Diamond tip.

Hits like phenolic, holds chalk very well, and offers almost as much control as leather. It's downside is that if it isn't installed properly it tends to pop off.

If you go with the WD I can tell you how to install it so it won't have the pop off issue.

I agree with the control advantage of leather. I use a cheap jump break stick and installed a black phenolic tip, don't know what kind, it takes a lot of
chalking to work. I started using a tip pick on the phenolic, it helps a lot with cb control. I used this tip over a year but it has split across the face.
Are you supposed to ***** these tips? Do you think *****ing caused the crack?

Tip piks are not intended for phonelic tips, and phonelic tips don't like tip piks.
Any phonelic tip will hold chalk well enough for one shot, and since they are jump or break cues, that's really all they need.

They aren't phenolic, but the ads don't really say what it is made from other than a natural fiber.

They are very inexpensive on e-bay and as far as I know they are legal in all leagues ... but I would check with a local operator.

A different combination.

I too use the White Diamond tip. However, I installed it over a G10 ferrule on my J/B cue. I have found that I don't have to swing for the fence to get a strong impact and this has led to much better control. An unexpected bonus came from this combination as well. The cue jumps much better than the phenolic tip/ferrule or the G10 tip/ferrule I installed prior to this setup.

i like the setup on the bk2 from predator. linen phenolic tip with phenolic ferrule and a carbon fiber plate between the two. breaks accurate and hard. just my two cents they came out with a great setup. didnt like the samsara or the icebreaker tips both popped off after a week of play. again just my opinion.

I use a Sumo water buffalo hard on my J/B and never have trouble with legality or them popping off. Overall they play great and allow for good control .

I am using a Jerico Stinger which has a canvass resin phenolic tip on it. Holds chalk just fine and after some initial adjustment (getting used to using it) control isn't a problem, nor is applying english.

I don't know whether it is a legal tip anymore in the eyes of the BCA

I had a Player j/b cue with a phenolic tip. Difficult to chalk. It now has a
leather tip. By the way, BCA has banned phenolic tips.

Hmmm...I wonder why the professional players don't make "at least 1 ball per break"...whether they use a leather or phenolic tip? The myth of "if you don't make a ball on the break, your break sucks, or you need to break harder"...is just that...a myth.

I used the phenolic because I thought that advanced technology would necessarily give me an advantage. I overcame problems with miscues & scratching, however I have since switched to a Samsari (hard) & it is one of those few times in life when I can actually have my cake & eat it too. My speed & power are just as good & I have much greater ease of control. I also no longer need to make a career of chalking.

As soon as I can make a ball on every break I will join with LWW in calling out pros beginning with Efren & Allison Fischer.
