Didn't most high end cues back in the day have Ivory ferrules? Hell at one point they were playing with Ivory balls. I myself have played with the old "clay" balls on occasion, and let me tell you those things weigh ALOT, to the point where I was a little concerned about my playing cues shaft / ferrule etc..
People used to break with Ivory ferrules back in the day, with heavier balls.. I don't see why if it's installed correctly from the get go why you couldn't today with lighter balls.
I have a set of old... old old Centenials that we use as our daily balls, and they are considerably heavier then the new aramiths & centenials of today as well. (just something to think about) They make a considerably different sound as well.
