Gotcha, I didn't watch a ton of the tournament and muted the commentary when I did. I'm not sure what an amateur in pool is anyway. That's one of the many problems with this sport is the lack of structure. But, that's another debate.

I just wish there was a genuine effort to attract the very best players AND a genuine effort to report the truth. Sometimes it feels like everybody is trying to do somebody a favor in this game. Forget about mainstream media. If we're going to keep the audience we have, keep our own pool community intact, we should have high standards. We need structure. We need to have a governing body that all organizations report to. Right now, we're a complete mess and it pisses me off when I see organizations taking advantage of the lack of structure.

That all sounds well and good but you know if they started paying out like they do in Vegas you would have all kinds of sandbagging shortstops working their way into the tournament for the cash. I think that making the players foot part of the bill is the only way to keep that from happening. That being said, I like the idea of adding more entries into the US Open. Possibly subsidizing a portion of the US Open entry if you qualifiy for the 128 field. Most of us would know that trip is just be for the experience but it would be a more equitable payout of the entry fees paid by the participants.
 
I met Brian Parks this past weekend and you can't help but root for the guy! He's good people. He grinded it out after getting kicked to the loser's side by MD-local Chuck Roth and he deserves the win! Next year I hope to get farther than I did (33rd), but it felt great getting the "pro treatment" at such a prestigious event and I recommend this tournament to anyone looking to challenge their game.

Way to go buddy, see you in Vegas. :thumbup:

Yeah, I just saw a video on youtube of his "man cave". Pool needs more people like him. That has to be the most badass set-up I've ever seen.
 
Wow I really opened up a can of worms on a post just congratulating a guy on something that is extremely difficult to win once but to do it 3 times and back to back (only henry brodt and possibly ron parks has accomplished..not sure on ron) and pretty positive no one has won it 3 times ever in 20 years....Again Brian excellent job we who have played this thing know it was well earned!!!!

You are a great player and person. I also play this tourney because I like meeting pool friends from around the country. You shot excellent. There's always someone that has to try and take something away from the accomplishments of others. I think you are a great role model for the hundreds of thousands of APA players out there.

Hope to see you at the Super Billiards Expo one of these years!

Anyway, ignore most of these fools. Very nice victory!

Gabe Appollos from Gallatin, Tennessee won the APA 9 ball tourney in Vegas this year. He beat another skill 9.....75-12 in the finals. Gabe plays as an amature but does very well in some tourneys where a lot of pro's play in. Brain Parks plays very well and has accomplished what most amatures will never see but anytime he wants to play Gabe he can bust me!

I believe Brian is also a former APA singles 9 ball champion, just like Gabe.

In the US Open on any given year, you might hear people say "these are the best players in the world". Just because a few B players put up their money to play in the tourney doesn't really invalidate the statement. I think its fair to say that just like at any tourney, the top 10% of the field is pretty damn strong. In the US Amateur Championship, I think we can all agree that the top 12 guys *are* in the top of all amateur players in the US. Same with this years US Open. The top 10 guys are world champ caliber all day. Not true of the entire field, obviously. Your comments come across as "odd" at best, and pretty negative at worst. Odd in that I can't figure out the benefit to you for pointing this out. Sounds a bit like a small chip on your shoulder. I doubt that is what you intended...but I gotta call it like I see it. No offense intended to you.

No argument here. I think better than this would be to cover the airfare and *required* extra hotel night for the 128 finalists. I had to pay near $500 ultimately to play in this event.

So Jude...Since a lot of the BEST players weren't at the US Open 9ball this year, I suppose it's not a national title either? Sorry, but this tournament is just as much a national title as any other tournament where players from all over the country compete against one another.

The US Amateur champion wins entry into the US Open next year plus travel and lodging expenses for that week in Virginia. Last year his package was around $2,300 for his trip to the US Open. oh yeah, he also gets that crappy trophy that cost around 500 a piece. Don't know why he would want to win it again,

The first back-to-back champ was Rich Ross from Massachusetts. He did it in 1995 and 1996, the 2nd and 3rd years of the event.
