Bringing cues on Plane

Im planning to bring several cues to the upcoming Super Billiard Expo. I want to fly there but I would like to bring my cues as carry on. Some one told me that if I bought one of those Porper travelling cue cases that I would be able to bring them as carry one. Has anyone done this before? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I was told that any and all cues had to be checked, as they can potentially be used as a weapon.

I think you will find that airport-to-airport and airline-to-airline it is different. There does not seem to be any consistency. One time you will be allowed, the next time the answer is NO. I think it depends on who is working or what side of the bed they woke up on the particular day that you’re traveling. :(

Actually, pool cues are listed on the signs at all Amercian airports of articles forbidden to fly in the cabin, no matter what case they are in. They are listed alongside guns, knives, etc. That said, in Las Vegas at the BCA Nationals last year several players got on planes with their cues just by running them through the x-ray and carrying them on. It seems the super-competent TSA folks often don't bother to learn their own lists of forbidden articles.

Hey!

You will not be able to bring the cue on the plane. Here are a few suggestions:

1. You can get a fexEx or USPO mailing tube to package it for the plane.

2. If you call a local drapery (blind shop) like EddieZ'z 9there's one over in Orland Park. They get shipping materials on larher rolls that you can fit cue and case in.

3. Bob bought a case that goes over his cue case and it works well. I can't remember who he got it from but I don't think it was Porper.

4. K-Mart, Walmart and others sometimes carry items to ship golf items. which brings me to number 5.

5. Check a golfing ship to see if they have anything suitable to ship it in.

You are best off buying something for the cue but, I would wait til Super Billiards to purchase something there.

Give me a call if you can't find anything. I will be at Palace Billiards this weekend if you are coming I will look in my neck of the woods for you.

BTW, there a few people coming from Chgo to VF, Bob and I are still undesided. IF we do go, I will bring your stick for you.

Ship them to a shipping store (you can find 'em) before you leave, and pick it up when you get there. I'd hate to check ANY pool cue, with all the horror stories I've heard.

Just an idea.

I'm planning on going to the BCA Nationals in May in Las Vegas. My cue case fits in a big old Samsonite suitcase that I have...I was planning to pack it in the suitcase and check it just like regular luggage. Is that a bad idea??

RayJay ~ A lot of people do that . If you have a hard case it should be fine. Otherwise, you may want to consider other packing.

Either way, make sure tou wrap it up real good.

Rayjay,

I've taken cues from Pittsburgh to Arizona, New Orleans and Hartford using the same setup. I'm assuming your cue case is a hard case. My cue case and my wife's case criss cross in my biggest suitcase and then I pack clothes around them. It's worked great.

As far as I know, (incompetent TSA aside) cues are NOT allowed to be carried on to any airplane.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback...I kinda thought it would be OK, but have never done that before. I do have a hard case and they should be fine, if they don't get stolen! Thanks...

If you are going to send your cue case with the rest of the luggage, I'd suggest you make sure your cues stay still, stick some paper in the case tubes or something. And, as the baggage "handlers" tend to get quite rough on the cases, you might wrap your case in bubble wrap or some other protective material to avoid damaging the case. Many cases can take the air freight handling but I guess many cases can't. At least after a few flights.

A short story: my friend's cue was travelling with the cargo in a regular hard case around Europe. When the case was returned, her Black Boar cue butt was full of dents ! I don't know if the lock had opened and the butt fell out or if the customs officers had opened the case and banged the butt in some sharp table corner, apparently looking/listening for a possible orifice for smuggling something, but the butt looked and felt terrible. Don't know if insurance is to cover such a damage, but I hope so... She stilll has to send the cue for a refinishing.

I've packed my cue inside my luggage many times, just fits diagonally and never had any problems...

Wow this sound like a major headache. Sheesh... Id hate to ship it first to where I staying or check it in. I want my cues to be with me and I hate to drive 14hours and waste all that time. I wouldnt care if they were junk but shipping/checking in 3-4 southwest... I dont know...

Sorry Erik, I wasn't trying to intimidate you :) But, if you are going to travel with a several 10k's worth of cues, some extra precautions are adviced. Shipping them through some company sounds reasonable, I bet they have much better insurance policies than airlines these days... I guess.

Or just add a label to each cue: "Dear customs officer Sir. These are not instruments of narcotic substance dynamic location storages, these are instruments of high $$ gambling. So, leave my sticks alone or I'll go out of business! Have a nice day." :p

Traveling cues

I travel overseas often and I do the following... I found a "hockey" bag (soft side) which is approx. 40" long (usually found in local sports equipment stores) and I put my entire cue case ..including a Kersenbrock/ Josswest and Southwest/...with cues inside, and pack my clothes around it. I have traveled thru Singapore/Kuala Lumpor/ Indonesia and have even flown on "Southwest Airlines"...no problems yet.

I recommend this as a good way to transport your cues. As long as you do not have a "collection" of cues which must be specially insured, your household policy covers your loss, if any. BUT, you must have a legitmate appraisal of your cue...( "the blue book of cues" is used by MY insurance agent!!)

Just a thought, you could look at Pelican flight cases. The 17xx series would fit, and you could either put the cues straight in them or get a larger model and put your regular cue case inside it.

They are not esepecially pretty or light, but are designed for miltary and industrial use, so should be strong enough. I believe they sell for around $150, so cheaper than a high-end leather case.

Alternatively if you want something you can walk off the plane and into a Pool Hall with the Zero Halliburton 4x8 might do, but it's more expensive:

I always use my Porper bag. It fits two 2x4 cue cases. I wrapped the case(s) up with some blankets. I also use masking tape and tape the lid of my case so it is relatively air tight. My concern is to provide an air jacket to my cues to protect them against the drastic drop of temperature. I am not too worried about the people banging my cues as my hard cases are quite soild, and the porper travelling bag is cushioned.
My other concern is how to find my bag and not to take some one's bag at the baggage claim. I tried to use stickers before but they came off, now I tied a ribbon of some sort to the handle.
The porper travelling bag is quite inexpensive. You can buy some import ones for about $10-15 less but they seem to be smaller. I do not think they come in the big size that I have.
The Samsonite big long travelling suitcase is very good as well. It will fit the cases and all your other stuff. You can get one for like $100. It even has wheels. I think they are very handy.

Has there ever been a case of someone hijacking an airliner using a pool cue?

Yeah, how come I can bring a pencil or pen on the plane? It would be much easier to hurt somebody in close quarters with one of those!!! :p

If I were going to travel with several 10k's worth of cues, I'd make the 14 hours drive and keep them with me at all times rather than ship or fly.
