Broken cue stories anyone???

Years ago I was at a tournament in Crossville TN and saw Frank Fisher lose a match and one by one take his two cues, lean them out and put his foot through them snapping them about the joint. He said those damn cues didn't play for sh^t. Funny thing was he made them.

I was sweating a match between a couple buddies of mine and one of them is faced with a jump shot and asks if he can borrow my jumper. I hand it to him and as he's walking to arounmd the table, he trips over his own friggin' feet, drops the cue, and steps on it all at the same time. It snapped right at the joint with a sickening crunch and I still remember the hilarious "Oh %$#&!" look on his face.

Felt bad for the guy because the only thing worse than breaking your own cue is breaking someone else's.

yeah man!!! those ceiling fans are hell!! been there done that
and yes, it was an alcohol related incident
i had to take about 3/4mm off to get past the dents

Saw Mike Massey on TV one time talking about accidentally sticking a $8,000 cue into a ceiling fan.

Years ago when I was a stake horse, my player got mad and broke his cue at the joint - it was a Harvey Martin cue
It broke the shaft just in front of the joint.
I took it to a well named cue maker and he made a new joint to fit my Palmer.
1-1/2 inch short but still my favorite shaft.

I watched a guy shoot terribly the other night and went full Bo Jackson on his Players cue that he won in a raffle.

The butt is fine. Tore the insert right out of the shaft.

There was the time this happened.

The joint snapped when I broke, then I threw the cue on the floor and the buttsleeve snapped off.

Is this gonna turn into a "show us your Dale Perrys" thread?

In San Diego, in a small Pizza place ,there was a pool table in the back...I was eating and watching my friend Gus gambling with a guy..All of a sudden the guy smashes his cue over Gus's head....The cue breaks in half with the fat butt part landing on the table...Gus picks the piece up and proceeds to beat the guy with it and chase him outside...I'll never forget that....Guess the guy didn't count on that happening...

I broke a Rambow in the early 70's from anger about losing a match. I swung the butt at the parking meter, the meter won.

In a year 2000 major tournament, Sigel shatters the shaft of his cue stick into a jillion splinters after the truly un-expectable, flukiest of scratches. As a 14.1 addict, this to me is an ultra-dramatic 3-minute video clip.

The two opponents are virtually tied in the area of 129 or so each in the 150-point match and Mike's at the table, needing less than 2 racks of balls for the win. With that scratch, Mike knows it's all over for him. The older commentator says the shaft-shattering was completely accidental, but he and co-commentator have been around the game forever and both know it was pure (actually very, very understandable) anger, given the implications of the scratch.

And you'll agree after watching this very rare (in professional pool) occurrence. Sigel had been retired from the game for 8 years due to its stresses and took up very profitable cue-making to make a comfortable living for his wife and young children. (As you’ll hear he made the shaft that you see him shatter.) Here's the video link:

Far as I know the 2 hour 24 minute DVD of the match is still quite available and well worth ordering from Accu-Stats. It’s a classic battle from beginning to end. Both players, for radically different reasons weren’t quite ready for the match and the tons of surprises within (Sigel emerging from years of retirement, Schmidt nervous in his first major pro 14.1 tourney -- and facing Mike Sigel). I was glued to my seat in the NYC audience nearly 14 years ago.

I won an 8-on-the-break pot worth 275 dollars. I immediately raised my hands in the air in a moment of joy. I didn't see the fan above me until the shaft and fan were both destroyed.

I told the owner to keep the pot and buy a new fan. FML. :(

Well I just watched a guy(yes, alcohol was involved) stick his cue up into a ceiling fan and ruin the shaft. Anyone have some stories of broken bent cues?

I had the opportunity to play Grady for a couple of days several years ago, at his room in Lexington, SC. Grady, as always, was a gracious host.

The second day I was there a fellow came in and apologized to Grady for something that had happened the night before. I'm not sure, but I think it involved the breakage of a custom cue. Anywhos, all is forgiven and forgotten and we're having a good laugh and the fellow starts telling the story of another "incident," relating that in this case, a player who was shooting poorly got to the point of holding his $1000 custom at arms length and said to it, "One more, and that's it for you, Big Daddy."

Well, the line struck me as pretty funny and I just remembered it and was thinking about other memorable cue incidents. Ferinstance, I was told by the old timers around here that a pretty well known St. Louis player (not Louie) use to have a reputation for breaking sticks (as did a contemporary of his -- a much lesser known player). They said that in one month, the rail birds counted nine cue sticks broken by the better known player and ten by the other fellow. The final act in this 30 days of carnage was the lesser known fellow losing a set for a healthy wager, calmly leaving the pool hall, emptying out his rather large cue case on the sidewalk, carefully lining up five cues (with shafts) on the curbstone and driving over them as he left the pool hall, never to be seen again.

We also use to have in this area a well known, rather large (physically and figuratively) fish who liked to toss his pool cue around when defeat came his way. On one occasion, he threw his cue, javelin style, at a wall. A perfectly shaped cue-sized hole remains in the pool hall wall to this day. On another occasion, this player left the pool hall and, once again javelin style, threw his cue onto the pool hall roof and drove off to nurse his rage.

More recently, we had another fellow who owned a pretty expensive Meucci. He dogged a ball and stuck the butt of the cue into a corner pocket. His reputation for cue destruction was pretty well known, so several of the regulars yelled out, "Don't do it, I'll give you a hundred for the cue!" He just smiled at 'em and yanked sideways anyway, dismembering the cue.

I was in attendance the night this last fellow I mentioned took his frustrations out on another Meucci. To get the visual image on this one, you have to know that at this particular pool hall the bathrooms are in a small alcove a few feet away from the money table. This guy lost a set and calmly walked into the alcove towards the bathrooms. The next thing we knew there was the most incredible stream of epithets pouring out of the alcove, accompanied by the sounds of splintering wood from the Meucci being pounded against the floor. This went on for a fair period of time and, at one point, a part of the shaft came (dare I say it?) squirting out of the alcove, end-over-end at about 50 mph and almost impaled one of the regulars sitting against the wall. When it was over, the fellow came out, deposited the several pieces the cue was now in into a trash can, smiled at the regulars and said, "I feel much better now."

Thankfully, it's a lot calmer around here nowadays :-)

Arguably an accident, but regardless, these players have loads of shafts with them and available for their use.

I was with some friends playing doubles at Mickey's in Vegas. We were playing on the Diamond closest to the window.

A few tables away was a group of guys playing on two tables. One of which was slowly, but surely losing his temper. At first it was a few outbursts, then strings of profanities. Then bellowed complaints of sharking.

After his opponent shot, and made, a fairly straight forward jump shot, the guy screams out "I HAVEN'T SEEN F'NG JUMPING LIKE THAT SINCE KINDERGARTEN". The four of us lost it. This guy was a big guy so we were trying to be discreet as not wanting to stir the hornets nest.

Maybe two shots later, we hear "F#$%", look over and he snaps his cue and walks out. Then the group of players he was with start to laugh. One of them looked at us and said something along the lines of "don't worry about it, that's just (can't remember the guys name) Joe".
