broken cue

What do you do when some one picks up your cue and bends it till it is broken while you are in the toilet during a match?
This happened to me tonight. Just looking for opinions.
The person involved has offered to pay to replace it, but how do you put a price on a prototype?
Do I price it as a cue for a customer, or do you charge them the time it took to make the 1st one?
Thanks to anyone who replies.
Neil quite ticked off.

Jmho..........

Take the broken "butt" end of the cue, and shove it up his a$$. Then hit the arsehole in the forehead with it! This way, he will have matching skidmarks!  ;) :thumbup2:

Agreed. Just kidding about the whole a$$ thing, maybe. Would be very difficult to put a price on a prototype. I think I would just try too price the cue out, as if it's one that you currently build. Price the points, the veneers, inlays, exotic wrap, wrapless, etc. Come up with a price that YOU can live with, and make out a formal bill. Hand the bill to said arsehole.......If he doesn't pay............then proceed with the a$$ thing! Just kidding. I think.

cue in hand

I learned this very important lesson once and your post brought it back to me big time. If something really matters to you don't let it out of your possession. I know it sounds silly but I don't leave my cue alone when I'm away at a poolhall or bar. It goes with me everywhere. I put way toooo many man hours of design and testing into MY magic wand over 35 years to leave it for someone to destroy while having "fun".

Whatever price you put on your broken cue will not cover the effort to rebuild it and it won't be the same if you do. Try to recover some costs and move on. Make the person responsible pay dearly so they learn a lesson TOOOO!!!! This is a tough one to recover from. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the replies. I realise it is unrealistic to recover development costs, but a bill for the price of a cue is still better than nothing.

I would just bash him in the head with the broken butt section and call it even.
If not, value it for what you would have sold it for.

Take the cost of today to build an identical cue. Then add a $150 a$$hole charge and buy wood.

a$$hole charge

Now theres a neat concept. I had one a player damn near infer that I was a rip off artist because I charge $25 for a layered tip (Talisman) along with a shaft clean.
I believe that if I ever have to do anything for him, I will levy this new charge.

I would love to be there when you hand him the invoice!!

I would just ask him to replace it.

You and I know he would struggle endlessly to do so. It would be fun to watch!

Well I am only 5'6 and this guy is a giant at 6'7.

I do like the a$$ premium though. That will hurt more than the hit in the head anyway.

Is this one of your grafite (sp) cues similar to a fishing rod that you have mentioned in earlier posts, if so the light weight won't do much to the head but the broken end will screw up the arsehole's hole. good luck--Leonard

Yes it was one of my carbon fibre cues. The handle is OK it seems,Needs a new pin. but the shaft is split at the joint. The down side is it requires another blank to make a shaft and the price of carbon of that grade is going through the roof.

Bout like Tomatoes here in NC I guess, all the local resturants have signs up about not serving at normal prices even Wendy's.--Leonard

Just charge him what you would have sold it for. There must have been some price that if offered for it you would have taken. Next time use an ugly stik blank and you might be able to avoid this.

That is the difficult part in development of making a composite shaft that will play as good or better than a wood shaft. But the fishing rods as such just don't cut it for playability and don't slide well either .Along with the high amount of glass make them quite heavy.

I would use 'todays' prices for the materials, not what you paid at the time you made it. It has to be, just to come close to break even. It also has to have the A$$ HOLE charge, so it leaves a lession imbossed, not only on his mind, but any other A$$ that may think it's a fun thing to do. If that don't work, well, we may know certain people who are good at teaching certain lessons........:grin:
Sorry for your loss, it sucks to put so much time into something, and some jerk ruins it in 30 seconds.
Dave

My son is going to use it in his composite class at college. He thinks it will be good to try and fix it and learn from it. I said good luck.
I lost the match. I was really put off by him breaking the cue and the bar cues suck.

Friday night,News travels fast. The owner of the bar has let other places know about the guy that damaged my cue,and the bar owner knows who he is.
He is banned untill he pays up and has let other places around know what he is like. They evidently take equipment abuse very seriously here.
Some large chap approached me tonight, said that if he didn't pay in a timely manner, they would see that it did happened. The bar owner has my details and has now passed them onto the abuser and the big guy asked for them as well.
I am sure it will all work out in the end.He has annoyed alot of people at the local bar that is for sure.
