Where do cue makers normally get white tail buck horns? I read today that the price was getting very high.

How many do you need, and what minimum size. I'm a hunter, and have tons of antlers lying around.

Try this guy kroftia1@frontier.com. His name is marty and he sells carved jewelry on ebay, he has Mounds of all types on antlers. I bought a few pieces from him the size of my wrist ! they measured over 2 inches across.

I have used a few buckhorn ferrules - one on my old break cue even. I think they are great.
But be aware they are not naturally white. You can bleach them, but the bleaching is only skin deep, so ferrule doesn't necessarily stay white when you turn it down.
I have a customer who asked about them and asked for one on his new custom cue. We talked about it not being white and I gave him 2-3 to choose from. He picked the darkest one - said he wanted his cue to have character. Now he's asking if it can be whitened:eek: I think he's too sensitive to other people's comments.

I wouldn't image whitetail prices skyrocketing any time really. They naturally shed their antlers and in some parts of the US they are overpopulated. Not really much of a shortage.

I am looking for material as well. I need a few pieces for buttcaps, joint collars and ferrules. Please feel free to shoot me a PM if anyone has some for sale. Machined or unmachined.

You'll have a heck of a time getting any whitetail that's big enough for butt caps.

elk antlers

Was picking up some food at Pet Smart the other day for my canines and low and behold they were selling elk antlers in about 3" pieces for dogs to knawl on. Thought the price was a little high. I work with this material occasionally and I guess if you need a piece this might work. The material I generally work with has cured out for about 3 years or longer.

Sent you guys some emails with pictures. I'll post whatever is left, if there's interest. Believe me, I have a sh!t load of antlers.

The thing about antlers is they have to be solid enough to use. I have a ton of antlers ive cut up that are useless. If the center is pithy, its useless. You can try to save it somehow or just try and use it, but it will crack and fail. For ferrules, the closer you get to the end of the tine, the better it is. I had one rack that was snow white. I mean white as xtc or elforyn, but those are very few and far between. Im lucky to have found a bunch of antlers that were solid and dry. Theres only a coulle that were big enough for buttcaps, but i probably got 80 joint collars and 50 ferrules out of the batch i got.

Anyone have some appox 3/16 thick antler slabs that would work for inlay material?
