Was curious if either of these was suitable for a single piece, merry widow style cue. If not...could a pseudo-one-piece be done...where you have a forearm, handle, and butt of the same type of wood put together to achieve a similar look?

Cornerstone Custom Cues had a Paul Mottey box cue that appeared to be one giant piece of amboyna burl, if I recall correctly. Both are so beautiful...it'd be great to be able to see something like that in either wood.
 
I guess if cored, you could.
Using burl for v-points make me wonder how weak the cue is with deep v-points made out of burl in that A-joint section.

I was wondering the same thing recently, but I got to thinking that after 4 veneers, the point wood doesn't go nearly as deep anyway. I've made a few and so far all have hit fine. I guess if you made one with deep points and no veneers, it could be a different story. I don't have that issue as I don't build cues without veneers.

Phenolic reinforcement can do wonders for soft wood points.
 
I know all of you already know this but sometimes you have to do things a little different based on what you are working with for the same strength and durability.

Gave what away? Nobody who doesn't already have the capacity to have figureed it out, sure aren't going to learn anything from this :) I just wanted to get you fired up!!!
 
I'll go you one better. I'd think impregnated with dyed acrylic resin, ala Wild Woods with a big core.

I've done a number of these type cues and you absolutely have to core burl. It either has no structural strength or it is brittle, both of which can be cured with a 7/8" core.
