Buddy and Efren 1985 - 10-ball???

Did you ever hear about Earl getting threatened at The Color of Money with Efren?

What's the story about this Lenny? I have seen the COM match more times than I can count and I had never heard anything about this. It appeared to me that Earl lost his head and was tired... Efren hit a monster gear and his break started working. Considering how much money was on the line and the unsportsman like things Earl was doing it wouldn't surprise me that he was threatened.

The story was that Earl was threatened by some people with the power to follow through with those threats, probably had alot of money in play on Efren,Earl would get paid something regardless but if he won he would face harm, perhaps death.

I never heard of that.
The match btw was not a winner take all as advertised.
It was 75-25.
Efren bought a 10K insurance from his American backer then.
So Efren really only won 65K on that match.
Also it was suppose to be a race to 100. Then later one when they go there it became a race to 120.

Blud also said here Buddy and Efren played 10-ball for the cash.
From what I've heard and read, Efren's backer in Reds was a lowlife and stiffed Efren a lot of money. Efren then hooked up with a Filipino businessman from Chicago.
Then in the mid 90's everyone knew at Hardtimes, Mark was Efren's backer.

Serves them right! If I were Efren, I would convince these scumbags who's staking him to back him one more
time in a huge money game and dump them, he would probably gotten a better "deal" from the other side...

Seriously? You do know the match took place in 1985 and it is 2008 now, right?

Where did you hear this Lenny? And at what point did Earl receive this threat? I suspect this isn't the case or it was overexaggerated. My main reason for this thinking is that if someone made a death threat towards me, I would not have been pulling half the moves that Earl did.

When Earl got to 117 first?
Iirc, they tied at 115, Earl got to 117.
Broke and the cueball went flying off the table.
Efren tied it at 117, then somehow Earl just lost it.

Efren was really at their mercy. Efren was using Caesar Morales's passport.

I think you have a typo making the year off by a decade.

They played 10 ball Jay. I was also there. Somehow you must have had too many games balls hang up on you. They have clouded your brain. You can confirm with Grady, Wade Crane and Keith who also played Efren. Efren didn't beat everybody. He broke even with Keith playing 9 ball on the bar table. I was in with Keith. We won the first set and Effie won the next decisivly caroming in many 9 balls. It seemed like Efren was getting very "lucky." I didn't like what I was seeing and we packed it in. My memory is also suspect in many departments, Jay, and Keith may have played 4 sets and broke even, instead of two.

Plus my pool nose told me something smelled about that match, whether Efren had been threatened and maybe sluffed one off, or he punished the rats that were staking him and giving him a very bad percentage (I think it was only 10%), or something else.
Hey old man, how's your health? You have not forgotten about road cover and a $400. set! Your Friend-JoeBowman

Over 10 years later & I've heard a new excuse for Earl's COM loss. It's simple, Efren had no success on the break during Earl's mad run. Earl looked to run away with it...he was playing perfect against a struggling Efren. Efren sorted his break out and started putting packs together just like Earl had been doing. As Earl watched his lead evaporate...his head went screwy and Bad Earl emerged. Remember, he even told Mark Wilson that he didn't care anymore. He had given up under Efrens onslaught.
