Buddy - Can Play One Pocket!

Buddy now has to fight his way through the loser’s brackets and I THINK that stamina is going to play a big part in HIS outcome.

OHB,
I saw Buddy play a late 9-ball match one evening at DCC. He looked very fatigued and out of shape (I believe he was also still alive in the one-pocket at that stage, and had a VERY full day). I sweated the whole match (since it was against a local "A" player who is a friend of mine) - Buddy got down 4-0 (race to seven), then made a great comeback to win 7-5 (though he did give our local a couple of more good chances to win). It looked like stamina was a problem for him, but DAMN, he can really play!!

I recall Steve Mizerak (once he got REALLY heavy) having similar problems, even stating on occasion that he didn't have any chance to win a tournament once he got onto the loser's side of the bracket. Good luck to Buddy.

Hemi,
(Bill Clinton has taught us that "deny, deny, deny" is an acceptable way to handle these things).

Hi Williebetmore,
Deny what? If u are refering to having sex,Bill Clinton DID NOT LIE, as per the definition he was provided. Are u are jealous of him because he got more girls than u could get?

Vagabond,
No, I wasn't referring to that. I was referring to his staff's well-known, 8 year policy of handling any potentially damaging allegations - I believe it was something of an official policy according to the staffers, and did not in any way depend on the accuracy or fallacy of the allegations.

P.S. - The idea of being married to Hillary, and fooling around with that slug Monica don't really appeal to me that much. I've been happily married for 26 years, and my wife let me have a kick-ass pool room - seems to me I'm WAY ahead of Slick Willy, no jealousy here.

Vagabond,
I see your point, who knows how many other skanks were involved - you are probably right. However, you've never seen my poolroom - it could be a close call. :) :) If you're ever down this interstate, drop by for a game or two.

Hi Williebetmore,
Do u own a pool room? what is the name?I played in Executive Billiards( on Keystone) many times and I also played in that non smoking place Chalkies.I was not fond of ?Airway Billiards. There is a pool cue cllector who owned a room in South side of the town and I played there too.
By the way I do not play straight pool.

Just curious what you think constitutes the best 9-ball ever played. Buddy was obviously in dead punch at this time, and nearly every pro has a top gear where he never misses, so how can you say Buddy played the best? Can you compare Efren in dead punch against Buddy in dead punch? They both play perfect, perhaps it comes down to their ability to kick? Efren is probably the best kicker in the world, Buddy is probably pretty good too. So what makes up the best 9-ball ever played in the game's history?

buddy was in the top 5 for 20yrs, anyone else close?

As I have said before - "Efren IS MAJICAL! - Buddy is BORING"!

Grady Matthews once played a legendary match with Buddy in Shreveport. Grady claims that he was playing some of the best pool of his life and still lost. Grady said that this particular match was one that he was proud of eventhough he ended up losing.

Grady also said that after the match the owner of the pool room hung up a sign that read:

DON'T COME IN HERE AND MISS,
AND EXPECT TO WIN

BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN THOSE THAT CAME
THAT DIDN'T MISS
AND DIDN'T WIN!

I always liked that.

BTW, in another post of top one pocket players Parica was rated all the way down at #5. IMO he is easily #2 in the world and would give Efren a serious run for his money on any given day. None of the others are even close to those two.

Gromulan - I remember that sign.

THAT WAS A GOOD SIGN - & TRUE!
I think it referred to the Buddy/Siegal match.
I'm pretty sure the owners name was "Red Box" & about that time is when he put an ad in the Billiard news and several mags that OFFERED ANYONE FREE PLANE FARE TO COME & PLAY BUDDY A $10K SET.

V-bond,
Sounds like you've played everywhere in Indy. I don't own any of them - my pool room is in my basement, but its QUITE nice (food and beverages are free). I don't know what you mean - EVERYONE can play straight pool.

At the last DCC, Efren gave Joyner a ball. SO to me, that means he can give EVERYBODY at least a ball. FYI, It wasn't even close!

As much as I hate to admit this, I now believe Efren is the greatest one pocket player to ever walk the planet. Yes, I even believe he could beat Ronnie in his prime. Efren, is 50ish and,,,,,,,,,GETTING BETTER.

I had Efren #3 on my top 10 ever one pocket player list. In my mind he has now jumped over Eddy Taylor and Ronnie Allen. Forgive me Mr. Mosconi but Efren is probably the greatest all around pool player ever.

Did you know, Hemi, that Eddie Taylor considered Rags Fitzpatrick to be a stronger one-pocket player than himself. When I mentioned that to John Ervolino, Brooklyn Johnny felt the same.

Hi,
I am a moran when it comes to studying the racks.I loose interest after running 6 or 7 balls and then miss a shot.Because of that I am unfit to play straight pool.
I played in Muncie,Terra Haute,Evansville,Logansport, and a small ku klux Klan town near Anderson and I forgot the name.
U must be living in Carlton or the rich suburb in North west part of the city where George Breedlove used to live.
By the way did Larry York return to pool or still is taking art classes?
Cheers

V-bond,
Sorry, I don't know Larry. I know some of the best players, but certainly not all - I spend most of my pool time practicing in the basement, or playing in the straight pool league.

No I didn't,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but

No, I didn't know that SJM but when asked who was the greatest guitar player ever, Eric Clapton, without hesitation said, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

SJM, my list I based on players that I had seen play. I had/have never seen Rags Fitzpatrick play. I have heard many stories of his prowess at one pocket though.

Top ten lists probably should be left to Dave Letterman but here, again, is mine. As I have stated prior, I now believe Efren belongs in the #1 spot.

1. Ronnie Allen
2. Eddie Taylor
3. Efren Reyes
4. Kenny Romberg, I know, Kenny who? Ask Ronnie, He Knows
5. Grady Mathews
6. Leonard Rucker "Bugs"
7. Steve Mizerak
8. Buddy Hall
9. Clyde Childress
10. Sonny Springer
