Buddy - Can Play One Pocket!

JAM - I agree with your assessment (as usual) but I also think you bring up a very good point.
Too Many Pool Players look at themselves as Gamblers and Most Are Not. They can't OR won't differentiate between betting on their skills and Gambling on LUCK. They CONTROL - All decisions and options (When playing Pool) - BUT - Are At The Mercy Of LUCK - When they play craps, poker, horses, any casino game, etc.

IMO - If many more Pool Players realized this fact - It Would Enhance Their Game And Pool In General!

This thread originated about Buddy and as far as I know - He ONLY Wagers On Pool.
ME TO! (& Gin)

OHB, in my experience on this earth, the pool players who have an inkling to engage in games of high stake, the majority of them are gambling addicts. I can recite many, many, many incidents in which a gambling pool player won mega bucks and was broke the next week. The reason for this is because there ain't no amount of money high enough to satisfy their craving to be in action, and the more dough they win, the higher they bet it up until, inevitably, the well runs dry.

I hear local stories about players winning $10,000 and $64,000 playing poker online. We all hear the big fish stories about the player catching that big kahuna, but not too many tales about the ones that got away, with their dough.

About Buddy Hall, the topic of this thread, he is a pool player who can play all games. There are players, today and yesterday, who have expertise in only one game in pocket billiards. Buddy Hall is heralded as a great 9-ball player, and he is a one-pocket machine. There aren't too many pool players, though, who:

can hold their own playing 3-cushion billiards, snooker, 3-, 7-, 8-, 9-, 10-, 12-, and 15-ball rotation, 14.1, banks (long and short rack);

can achieve proficiency on 9-footers, 8-footers, and 7-foot tables;

can adjust their style of play to excel on a Gandy, Brunswick, Diamond, Valley, or Olhausen table at will;

can adapt to slow cloth or fast cloth;

and can move the red-dot, blue-dot, or polka-dot cue balls with precision.

Today's players enjoy the benefits of modern technology, excellent equipment, and a variety of cues/shafts to suit one's tastes. Players like Buddy Hall can play all games no matter what the venue, which is why he is a champion (IMO) and always will be.

As my cohort tells me, OHB, no matter how good you play, "There's always going to be a paddle to fit every backside." :p

Well JAM why do people stay in bad marriages too long? Why do people keep trying to save a business thats bankrupt? Why do we try to talk a cop out of a ticket when it was obvious we were wrong? Because you have hope that something will come out your way. As I said this happened literally in a short span of time. Since I was not in on the particulars I was talking about attitude. Every time I saw Efren play for the cash he tries his 100 % best. No excuses for winning or losing. Except the usual " I got lucky". I think that has to figure in to "greatness" as a pool player and that is Sportsmanship.
As far as playing for your own money. There are always those who have an excess in disposable income who like the action. And Efren is probably surrounded by those who insist on backing him. And those who have profited off of his abilities. Why shouldnt he not take advantage of this?

I just want to say thanks for your postings JAM. They are always enlightening and interesting. I also see Keith M as a giant in the pool world and history and we need more people like him that gives the sport we love the excitment and color.

You got that right! (LOL) I've never hesitated to speak up when my dough is involved. No matter how powerful the persuasion from the player who's in heat to play, I am a realist, and it doesn't take too many games to figure out who's in stroke or who's got the best of it.

Personally, I think it's better for a player to bet their own money, but being that most action players are addicted gamblers, they stay broke; thus, necessitating a need for a backer. JMHO, FWIW! :p

No, I didn't know that SJM but when asked who was the greatest guitar player ever, Eric Clapton, without hesitation said, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I've been playing guitar for over 8 years, and I'm told I'm pretty damn good, but I try to stay grounded. Both EC and SRV are two of my idols, but if you really want to see and hear a great guitarist, check out http://www.jasonbecker.com Go to that site and read his life story, it's actually quite sad. There's a video of him on the net somewhere, and he is playing some song extremely fast, but he's playing it with only one hand, and his other hand is playing with a yo-yo, doing all sorts of crazy tricks.

Sorry for the non-pool related rant.

good day

I hope Buddy stays in good health. At 63 he has some good years left. I am 68 and try to play every day. Playing one pocket keeps your mind sharp. NOW IF I CAN JUST FIND A WAY TO WIN

I believe the quote was attributed to the Beard...Buddy couldn't find his hole with an Indian guide!

Compared to us scrubs, he can play.

from what I have heard Buddy owns a pool hall in Florida. My Dad learned a lot from Buddy when he was in the Air Force he used to run around with Buddy in Shreveport. Lots of crazy stories about the old days I love to hear about...My Father actually had a video of Him and Buddy playing in the Garage 9 ball Dad said buddy ran 9 straight racks before missing a ball.

Buddy does not live in New Orleans. So far as I know, he and his family still reside in Tampa, Florida. He's not giving anyone 10-2 that I know of. I myself would have to consider taking 10-2, and I'm a "B" player... ;) I believe he oftentimes gives good shortstops something around 11-6 or 11-5. BTW, it's not Buddy who plays cards-- it's Smorgassbored, the redoubtable Tampa Tubby Bob!

To clear this up, Buddy Hall lives in Tulsa and plays at Magoos...I see him there every time im there...He is a super nice man!

Hell of a BOWLER too . . . and could shot pool for the big cheese both right and left handed . . . amazing!

He was the best 9-baller . . .

Buddy is one of the greatest to ever play this game of ours. I only think it's a damn shame that he doesn't enjoy straight pool. I'd love to watch buddy shooting straights.
