Bumper pool

I played bumper pool for the first time since I was a kid last night. By applying my since-learned skill-set from one pocket, the game turned into an absolute blast! It was all fun.

It was an octagonal table with 14 bumpers. Moderately thin caroms off of the bumpers are super difficult.

I hate bumper pool except back when I was 12-13 after my dad died,
my mom dated a guy who used to take us to The Playboy Club in Denver for dinner.
I always got in the game with Playboy bunny bumper pool hustlers.

I haven't played bumper pool since my teens (65 now). I used to play on both the octagonal and rectangular tables.

I wouldn't even use the word bumper and pool in the same sentence now (except in the above paragraph) as I consider the game to be more associated with pinball than pool.

The best "Playboy bunny bumper pool hustler" worked out of the Lake Geneva WI Playboy Club. She went undefeated for years! LOL...of course her looks were a pretty serious distraction!...and on top of that, she could play!

My dad repaired pinball machines & jukeboxes as a second job. Aside from usually bringing me all the worn out 45 rpm records, he surprised me one day with a beat bumper pool table salvaged from a tavern that closed. Since I was still too short then to play on a regulation table, by the time they finally let me into the pool halls I had already mastered the cueing basics.

Haven’t played since I was a college freshman. Brand new bumper pool table in the dorm basement, and a guy from Memphis taught me to play. He could usually run the 5 balls in 1 or 2 innings. Taught me all the tricks, the one rail-two bumpers to the hole shots. It was fun for what it was at the time.

Bumper pool continued. And good videos on strategy? My neighbor has an octagon… other neighbor has the rectangular.. that I prefer.

Haven’t played since college. Guy from Memphis and I became good friends and played a lot at the downtown pool hall.

There was a bumper pool table in the basement of one of the dorms. I told him I had never played bumper pool. He said he would teach me.

Did not take long for it to get boring. Basically, both players shoot their first ball at the same time, and the one that gets closest to their hole shoots next. I remember numerous times when neither of us missed. Each of the five balls for each player found it’s way to the hole with one stroke.

Few realize that the jump stick hails from bumper pool. According to the late and great AZB poster Hemicudas, legendary bumper pool player Marcus Collier played in a pool tournament just over 50 years ago and was seen using his bumper pool cue to execute a jump shot. Pool players took notice that jumping appeared to be easier with a shorter cue. This led to the gradual development of the jump stick, now carried by virtually every player.

I restored a bumper pool table last year. At 1968 Fisher. I picked it up for $100 locally. Bought new balls and post rubbers and drop hole liners. Had cloth from a table I recovered ages ago sitting around. Here is at the end result and the rough starting point. Super fun game and more challenging than you'd think when playing against someone around your speed in pool.

If you don't have to use a bumper to pocket a ball it is a simple game and easy to 1 rail all 5. Adding the off a bumper and its another animal😉

Hemicudas was a hell of a guy. I miss him🙏🏼🙏🏼

A few years ago I was at a party at another league players house. In his basement he had a nice 8' table for us to play on, and also had a bumper pool table. I hadn't played since grade school. We had a blast! Tough game to play well.... (like most games)
