What are the benefits of going bumperless ? If there is none why not put one on ?
I was just wondering why someone wouldn't want one ?

no bump for me

the only thing i found bumperless cues were good for was watching the ground slide out from under your cue and watching it hit the floor on non carpeted surfaces:angry:

if it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping . . .

I agree, looks, sound, and the main thing that might make a person decide on having a bumper or not, it does change the harmonics of the cue, the feel. The vibrations travel very rapidly the length of a cue so killing some of the vibration at the butt end does have a real effect on how it feels.

I have two cues that just have the threaded bumper pushed in the butt. As is common with those bumpers one is missing. I find either cue too annoying to play with without a bumper so I trade it back and forth. I don't like a dead cue or a real pingy one. Somebody else that likes a lot of noise and action might prefer a cue without a bumper.

The real reason.

Back in the 50's, cues with bumpers were thought to be a "cheaper".
That's the main reason the Willie Hoppe's didn't have one.
I have read this fact many times in older billiard books.

Cuemakers nowadays like to make traditional style cues a lot, and one look that will never go out of style is the ivory hoppe back end of a cue.

PERSONALLY, I have been playing with a bumperless hoppe style cue for over 7 years now.
The main reason I do is that I like the sound and feel of the hit better.
Rubber bumpers on a cue actually damper some of the vibration and feel/sound of a cue.

Hope this helps.

This was Doc Frye's style for a while...he eventually made cues with bumpers. I think the cue does look unique without a bumper.

Bumperless is the way to go... Rubber bumpers do dampen the note a cue makes and also absorb some of the it as well. Its minor but it still is something. I personally like to feel as much of the shot as possible because in doing so my touch is alot better. By the way, the cue is an instrument just like any other. Heres a pic of my Sneaky Pete by Adam Franks Cues.. His trademark, so to speak, is he does not use any rubber, plastic or veneer work.. everything is natural from tip to end.. i love this cue but i cant wait till he's finished with our upcoming creation!!

Theres no reason to not have one.

I have 3 or 4 without bumpers, theres no real difference. The only reason those don't have them is because they were show cues and have plugs in the bottom with dates and inscriptions on them.

If you want to 'see' the difference, just unscrew yours and find out for yourself. ;) Its not like the butt construction is any different. :grin-square:

Easier to screw an extension in to the bottom. Most snooker cues are built this way.

I like the look of a bumperless cue as well, but I hate seeing them for sale. Nothing worse than a $2500 masterpiece with chips in the butt

thinking about white delrin

I love the look of the bumperless cue although I do not own any.

I'm thinking about white delrin for bumpers. Tough and durable and would look better I believe. Would require replacing more often than rubber of course. Maybe a small price to pay for beauty.

Bumperless look cool, but than you RISH BREAK the BUTT if you BUMP IT. Small bumper is the Way to go IMHO. Hager Extensions Work GREATwith out SCREWING!!

A rubber bumper deadens the vibration in the cue upon impact and therefore changes the way the cue feels at impact. I have taken the bumper out of my cue (Southwest) and it has nothing to do with how it looks. I like the way the cue hits better without the bumper.

Remember those x-1 limbsavers?
Those were rubber butts on steroids.
Regular bumpers do the same, but to a much smaller degree.

Chris<~~~~~totally convinced bumperless hoppe's are the way to go

Both of my PH Tru Balance cues are bumperless with Delrin butt caps.

You still have to be careful with the finish but its pretty hard to destroy Delrin.
