my dad bought this cue from burton in his basement in chicago in the mid 70s. we never knew what it was worth until we brought it to valley forge last march and got an idea as to its value.

since we were told its very valuable, my dad decided to stop using it and gave it to me to sell...so here we are.

i know very little about the cue other than a ballpark for what i should get for it. i don't even know the weight. :o

but i do know (or was told) that the green washer style separator pieces are plastic because this was when burton was going through a plastic phase.

sorry for the pathetic description but it is what it is. anyway i'm looking to unload this cue because i have no need for it but i'd like to put it in the hands of the sort of person who wants to complete their collection with it and not to someone who wants to turn it around immediately and sell it for more.

if i cant get the price that i think is right on here, i'll probably hold on to it and try and unload it at the DCC in january or even wait until Valley Forge in march when i know there will be people that are looking for a cue like this.

Instead of the game show guessing game....how about getting the specs and listing with your price.

Secondly, I would recommend getting a verification on the cue in writing from a reliable source and include it with the sale.

Like Ken said, I would definately get the specs together and post a price.

Or, if you know it to be a Spain for sure I would definately send it to Joel Hercek and have him authenticate the cue for you. You will have MUCH better luck in the sale with a letter from Joel.

Thanks guys. That's good to know info. I'm 100% certain its legit but i'll try and get some more info on the specs. anyone have contact info for this Joel Hercek guy?
 
thanks everyone. while i hash out the spec details and pricing behind the scenes, i'm curious, what's standard operating procedure for payment and delivery?

do cues get mailed by COD? is payment made via paypal and then the cue is sent? do i have to pay taxes on the sale price? are there any protectionary measures i should take?

No problem.

Most of us are like family here, but for those you have any questions about I recommend using Marcus, (Fast and Loose) here on AZ.

Without the Hereck (or other significant) verification the cue is a crap shoot IMO, and it sounds like you have figure in mind.

I have no interest in cue, so believe me I am not leading you astray.

some additional details

1) i'm not certain who bill is, but if you're talking about Valley Forge, yeah, that was probably me. otherwise, it's probably somebody else with some other cue.

2) i spoke with Joel Hercek yesterday who will attest to the authenticity of the cue. It was built in '74 or '75. Joel mentioned it has the following features:

- Floating Joint, which is rare. Floating joint is a type of self-centering joint, which Burt tried to patent at one point. It was only about 1 year of his career where he actually made cues with this type of joint.

- The dots are probably micarda

- The joint is made of delran

- Butt cap probably made of delran or some type of pvc plastic

- Butt is probably made of brazillian rosewood

3) there is some minor warpage to the shaft. the picture below is the best i could do to show it. i'm pretty sure (but not certain) its still the original shaft. my dad does NOT remember getting a new shaft at any point. one would expect that after 35 some years, it wouldnt be exact straight so...

That being said, after speaking to Joel, I'm revising my expectations. For those that I already PM'd back, take the low end and top end of the range down by $1k. Of course, i'm still looking for the best offer possible. but with revised expectations.

Spain Cue

Blue Book of Cues, 3rd Edition:

Based on other Spain cues with no points, a few mircarta inlays, with linen wrap and about 70% condition would put cue at around $1400 in the book. But looking at this cue, and the fact the shaft is warped, it appears the this Spain cue is in about 50 to 60% conditi:cool:on. So adjust accordingly. How much are you asking for this cue??

Pretty wild. That is the exact Spain cue that I own. It is also featured in the blue book of cues. I just dropped it off at Joel Herceks last week to get refinished. I've owned and played with it for 35 years. Time to get her looking good again. PS: I know it is worth more in original conditon, but I'm not ever selling and want to make it look new again !! Still shoots great ! I might retire her once my Hercek cue is ready,,, still got 2 more years on waiting list !
