Burton Spain photos

I would like to thank you all too for these amazing posts!!! Those catalogs (naturally...) show me models that I haven't seen anywhere - thanks a million times for those!! That chequered one looks astonishing but, on the other hand, I love the 'less busy' ones toooo!!!

It really is frightening to see what those cues were sold for back a few decades ago and how much do they worth now. If only I wasn't 18 at the moment...:(

Thanks manwon for the pictures, I really-really hope that you'll keep them coming!

some buskas were under 100$ and botis only a few hundred more. look what they get for the plain ones.

burt to me is deff around that class. i have 1 queston. i see both pin styles in butrons. why did he do both and which did he prefer. does anyone know.

today the only cues with pin in the shaft is at k mart. wonder if he did this to force repeat buisness like other cuemakers who made their own oddball pin so only they can work on the cue

i'm not exactly sure but I think I heard he put the pin in the shaft because the shaft is a smaller piece of wood, and therefore weaker with the hole in it. Since the butt is a larger piece of wood, Burton believed the joint is stronger with the hole there instead. John Robinson is another old cuemaker who put the pin in the shaft.

Burton Spain

There are some photos of Burton at the Illinois Billiards Club and also some examples of his work in various stages. I'll try to take photos this thursday and upload them.

Dmgwalsh: that would be great if you could take and upload those photos!!! I'm very curious!

As for the pin: this might sound weird but... this is one reason why I like Burton and his works - because he investigated everything and really knew what he was doing. Unfortunately I am short of time to explain all that but as soon as I have time I will - if you want me to, of course :)

In case anyone else has suggestions regarding the pin please share it here! Thanks!!

Burton Spain, was an innovator, and while the two pin types you are speaking of are the most well known, Burton also used almost ever type of pin style / thread that was used during the 1960's and 1970's.

Around 1978, Burton began using the pin in shaft style that he used until his untimely death. Burton Spain, while not always given the credit he is due was one of the greatest innovators of the 20th Century. His name should be up there with Rambo and Martin, who not only built cues, but also incorporated unique techniques in design that have influenced almost every form of cue making today.

Burton had a tremendous impact on cuemaking and should be remembered as one of the true legends

Amen Brother!!!! Well said!!!!

And the congregation all said, Amen.

Those are some very awesome pics there Graig, in fact the craftsmanship and the level of inovation that Burt had, makes it easy to see why the great cue makers like George Balabuska, were more than happy to use Burt's blanks.

Thank you craig for posting the pics.

Thank you very-very much for those pictures from his book!

If I'm not mistaken that speech ('Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Billiard Cues And Were Afraid I'd Tell You') was quoted in the BBOC 3rd Edition - I've read that a few thousand times...:o

Thanks once again, I have read all the things I could on your uploaded pics - and of course saved them all on my PC - they're some real treasure to me!!

You are very welcome, I glad I could help!!! I wish others on the forum would follow suit, there are a lot of people who have information like what I have posted. However, many just keep it to themselves, which is their right, however, it would be very nice if everyone could share what they have and know, because so much inaccurate information could be corrected.

Have a great day!!!

I share your opinion manwon, I feel the same way... However I cannot blame anyone for not putting up his/her stuff here but I do can be very-very glad and thankful for all the things that I have seen so far.

Every line that I have read here brought me a bit closer to my favorite cue maker and that means so much to me!!

I have time - it's true - but I would like to see/read more and more things regarding Burton Spain. More and more pictures, articles, opinions (!) and everything... and hopefully one day I'll have one all original Burton in my hands - but that will not happen today or tomorrow.

Anyways thank you all for your help it means very much to me.

Pooh

P.S.: badabing: that cue has got some amazing veneer work!

I knew Burton personally and he was super nice and helpful. I bought blanks from him and they were the best full splice blanks I have seen to date. I have three of his cues. Two are on my hightowercues site for sale under used cues. It was a sad day when we lost Burton. I would not bother building my own blanks today if he was still around. We inducted him into the ICA Hall of Fame a couple of years ago.

Chris, if you have any photo's of Burton please post them.

Just what I wanted to ask, manwon! :)

I cannot imagine what would it be like to know him personally... I surely would have written him a few (thousand...:)) e-mails if I born earlier...

I also had a Guffey with a Spain forearm (see pics). I sold it to Sean at Cue Addicts who had James White use the forearm to build a gorgeous conversion...
