1 1/2" slate - make sure to have 2 bowls of Wheaties in the morning.
LUCKILY - the center slate went on correctly on the first go.
Slates match very well at the seams.

1 1/2 slate will require thicker poplar to make the blocks. 2 pieces of 3/4 stacked and glued will give you the finished thickness you'll need.

Missed the 1 1/2 part in my OP.
