Caesars Boardwalk Regency Classic: Reid, Sigel, McCready, and Howard

I am the storm

A friend from Alabama sent me a VHS cassette tape, 6 hours in total, a portion of which contained the last four men standing in a tournament at Atlantic City, NJ. Allen Hopkins is one of the commentators, along with several beautiful ladies, to include Ewa.

I purchased this Toshiba dubbing machine a few months ago, and this is the first time I've had a chance to figure out how to dub a VHS cassette tape onto a DVD, which I am doing now as a I write this thread. :o

I am hoping somebody on here will guide me in this thread to post up the video after it is finished dubbing. Please join me in this journey to get this vintage pool footage on YouTube. :p

The problem with the 6-hour videotape is that there are portions of the pool tournament intermingled with tennis matches, a black-and-white movie, and the Ed Sullivan show, which has a pretty cool appearance of Michael Jackson reunited with his brothers singing "I'll Be There." Of course, I only want to dub the pool stuff. ;)

I saw Keith's match when I was fast-forwarding through the VHS tape, and now I can't find it, but I figured since I found Reid and Sigel's match, I'd dub that now. Man, you should see Jimmy Reid with a big afro or perm, and then tehre's Barry Behrman with a full head of brown hair.

Anyway, when it finishes dubbing, I would appreciate it if somebody could give me step-by-step instructions how to get it on YouTube. The last time I usted this dubbing machine, it created a file folder on the DVD with .VOB files on it. I have Real Player Pro and other video software, so maybe I have something to dub it into a correct format.

Also, I am dubbing this using my LG HDTV, and the picture fits the full screen. Should I have changed my settings to have the VHS picture fit only a portion of the TV before I began dubbing?

Oh, they're playing on a Gandy table with tan cloth, and believe it or not, there's a full house ouf spectators. Keith looks just like he did when he was in TCOM, so I think this may have occurred in the '80s but not sure.

Looking forward to help, info, anything you can provide. My present to you all will be a chance to see this on YouTube, hopefully. :angel2:

In the words of Arnie, I'll be back. Please help! TIA!

Ewa sets up a trick shot, the 1-2-3 trick shot. Even I can do that one.

The place is packed. You can hear and see the huge crowd in the background. I see Eddie Kelly in the front row, and I think Larry Schwartz (not sure).

People are smoking cigarettes in the audience. LOL!

Mike Sigel's "fiance" at the time is in the audience sitting, Christina. She had several cameo roles in "The Color of Money," one playing a waitress in a diner and another racking the balls. Her hair is curly in this photo, taken at the 1986 Maryland State Championship, but in the video I am dubbing, her hair is straight.

Left to right, wife of Richard Allen (Owner of the late Champion's in Silver Spring, MD) holding Gary Allen (the owner today of Champion's in Frederick, MD), Rose Wilson (pool royal family in Maryland area), me, Christina, and the lady with the neck brace was Cigar Tom Vanover's wife. I wish I still had that hair of mine, dag nab it.

Interesting things I'm picking up as it's dubbing. Sigel and Reid are the finals, and the "best 9 out of 17" wins the match, $15,000.

Sigel and Reid are smoking cigarettes at their tableside seats.

Barry Behrman is the referee, and Ewa is the rack girl. :grin-square:

The players are mic'd. I can't wait to find Keith's match and dub it. :grin-square:

We have so few pictures and photos of Keith, so this will be cool if I can figure out how to do this.

There are waitresses serving drinks to the audience, and believe it or not, the men in the audience are all wearing suits. No T-shirts and shorts for this crowd. They all looked like they just stepped out of a "Saturday Night Fever" movie. :D

Now I have to start all over. When I put the DVD in my computer, my computer said the DVD is blank. Sheesh!

It's like a nightmare, isn't it? :embarrassed2:

I can simply NOT wait to see it.

I am very willing to help you. If you manage to get the whole thing as a file which video editing software recognize, and are able to upload it to some file sharing site, I am more than happy to edit out all the other stuff and only leave the match and upload it to youtube.

Cheers!

Thank you so much.

Now a new problem has erupted.

After rewinding the entire VHS cassette tape to the beginning, I insert it in the DVR machine and it keeps ejecting. Now the tape will not play. I think the ribbon broke off the end spool, which means I have to take it apart and fix it.

What a bummer! Spent all this time and still can't get it to dub. :(

I will try to fix it and come back to this thread again someday. I may have to take the tape to a professional and have it fixed. If I attempt to fix it, I might do permanent damage.

To be continued sine die..

Here is a question I have. Has anybody taken apart a VHS tape when the ribbon comes off the spool? I see two little screws in the black cassette plastic frame.

I have done this with regular audio cassette tapes, but I have never done a VHS tape.

This is my only copy, and I don't want to ruin it. Do you think it is possible for a layperson like myself to fix this? Please advise.

Try to find someone that is handy with that kind of stuff. I'm handy but almost destroyed a tape the first time I did it. It can easily go south.

Thank you for letting me know. With that, I think I am going to take it to an audio/video store. It will probably cost me $25 to $50, but I must have this. Why did that guy have to have 6 hours of pool mixed in with Ed Sullivan, a black-and-white movie, and tennis matches? LOL

I only saw a few minutes of Keith, which was what I wanted to see the most.:(

The rest of what I saw was Sigel and Reid. Barry Behrman was a hoot with his dark brown full head of hair.

Allen Hopkins was/is an excellent commentator, and I detected a wee bit of New Joysey accent when he spoke. Also, Allen was/is quite handsome in this video.

Having the players mic'd was really great. Jimmy Reid was sqawking a little bit, but it was Keith that I wanted to hear. Dag nab it, why did it break!

Thanks again for sharing your experience.
