Calling All Seasoned Players … Are You Ever Surprised?

Dear Gentle Readers,

I was initially thinking about one-pocket, but I suppose this query could apply to any contest involving felt, slate, cushions and circular rolling objects. Pockets may well be involved, but not necessarily.

Do you boys -- those of you who have thousands (tens of thousands?) of hours on the tables -- ever react to a situation with a ‘whoa, I’ve never seen that one before!’?

Let’s segregate this particular coroner’s inquiry into three specific categories:

1) a table layout you haven’t encountered in the past.

2) a specific shot you’ve never seen executed.

3) an opponent’s response that still catches you by surprise.

Or, for you table-vets, is it all a sort of weary deja vu … a been-there, done-that?

On reflection … perhaps I should rephrase the query to eliminate number 3 -- the ‘opponent’s response’ segment. My own shot selections would almost certainly startle and dismay many senior devotees of the game. Yet, as my heartthrob, Efran, purportedly observed, ‘I like watching amateurs … I occasionally learn a new shot.’

(Isn’t the word ‘amateur’ such a kind designation? It implies innocence as opposed to incompetence.)

Having clocked relatively few hours watching, and even fewer playing, I’m often clueless (cue the blonde jokes!) as to how I should respond as the balls roll to a stop. My lack of talent doesn’t bother me so much as does my not knowing what a knowledgeable player would do next.

Confession is my life,

Sunny

P. S. Turning to a pool forum for answers is sort of like leaving the menu selections up to the chef in an omakase-type restaurant. One never knows what will be served up, do one?

I can't get past the misspelling of Efren's name on a pool forum!

At my experience and skill level, I'm surprised on a regular basis by what good players can do.

Having seen and played countless matches in the last 40+ years....I think this quote is appropriate.

"People that don't believe in miracles, have never played pool." Robin Adair 1995

There are always surprises at pool, more so at straight pool and one-pocket
than 9 or 10 ball.

I remember California John (late 70s) reversing a trap that Romberg had
laid and Jimmy Reid saying..."MAAAN! I've been every place at least four
times, but I aint never seen NOTHIN' like that!"

And Efren (that's Efram's Pinoy brother ) has played many shots
he has never seen before...they're strictly ad-lib..that is why he's known
as the Magician.

pt...<..also a magician, I can make my bank-roll disappear...

I would agree Efren has done more shots that I had to scratch my head and say, "What the hell did he just do?"

I am particullary speaking about when he shoots off the "tip" or "Point" of the pocket.

I don't know if it is on video or not, but Efrens final or near final match with Jason Miller playing one pocket may be the single most amazing display of one pocket I have ever seen. This was at the DCC several years ago. OMG.

Efren is the best pool player I have ever seen.

Playing 1pocket last night and I hit a take-away shot 3 rails into my pocket at warp speed!
Will try and post picture of layout later today.
Balls struck real slooow, and balls hit HARD,often react waaaay different then players imagine they will.I have been thinking about this as a thread topic myself.

My opponent once jammed two balls in a pocket:

They are both off the playing and therefore counted as in.
This picture is a pretty good reason for me to think that 4.5 inches ...
...AT THE FALL..is the right size for a pool pocket.

I was warming up for an 8 ball match in my last in house money league, when I shot the 14 ball frozen on the long rail 2 diamonds up from the corner pocket with the RED CIRCLE cue ball about on the kitchen line & about 1.5 diamonds off the long rail. I shot it with high inside right english & the cue ball followed the 14 straight into the corner pocket.

I shot it 6 more times & it never happened again. Each time the cue ball went where it was supposed to go.

The only thing that I can figure is that the ball climbed the 14 & also turned & came down spinning into the pocket.

It was a total surprise & one example of why I hate the red circle cue ball.

Watching some of Efren's magical shots still suprise me today, and I've watched them over and over.

Playing snooker a few years ago against some random kid. He hits a force follow shot like nothing I've ever seen in an actual match. Pockets the red at the speed of light and the CB slams into the long rail, bounces back out and then follows back into the long rail. It did this another 3 times. The spectacular part was that there were 2 reds on the long rail and it curved around both to leave him perfect on the blue. Best damn break of 6 I've ever seen!

Good thread!, and my first post in months :) I recently purchased a 3c table and EVERY time I play that game, or watch for that matter, I see something unusual that leaves you scratching the noggin.

Another one is banks! I have been playing a little banks of late and I sometimes find myself missing an eazy cross side bank by a diamond with NO clue to why? then fire in a 3 railer like it has eyes? fun game!

cue ball a lot bigger than object balls ?

Yes, we counted both of the balls as pocketed.

And yes, the pockets are HUGE (but still sometimes not big enough for me!)

We were playing with my measle cue ball. It is slightly larger than the object balls because they're so old they've compressed. Although most of the difference seen in the photo is because the CB is closer to the camera than the OBs.

I can't find the link right now, but there's a great video clip of Efren's opponent popping the OB right out of the pocket. It lands right in front of the pocket -- and then Efren does the same thing! One-in-a-billion odds of that happening.

Playing once when I had the object ball off the rail about 2 inches from the bottom left pocket and about three inches to the right of the pocket--nice cut but--I had to jump over a ball about 2 feet in front of the cue ball--sort of a backwards cut but makeable-cueball and obstructing ball where back up near the top rail--so this happened all the way across the 9 footer-I jumped over the ball ,,cut the object ball thin and made the ball with no problem-- I was watching to see the cue ball rebound and come up the rail--that never happened--the cueball stayed on the rail like it was glued too it and walked over to the other corner pocket from the pocket I had cut the object ball into--and then scratched--I have never figured it out--or seen it sence-- I could see this happening if it were to be a ball in the pocket and take top--but this ball was cut so thin that I still can't put a handle on it.

I've been around pool

And world class elite players for a long, long time. There is hardly anything that surprises me in a pool room anymore. The one thing that is still shocking to me, no matter how many times I've seen it happen(and it's been quite a few times), is when players break their cues. Never ceases to amaze me.

It's happening less and less, but every so often I see a funny 'ball physics' thing
that leaves me dumbfounded. Several times I've seen the wedged balls in the pocket,
shots off the pocket point, the cue ball going left after cutting the object ball left, and so on.

Specific surprises I remember:

• An object ball being jumped off the table on a very hard break.

• The cue ball banging an object ball near the rail with heavy top, the object ball rebounds,
the CB dives forward with leftover topspin and taps it into the pocket.

• A shot similar to what english described

• A buddy did a combo rail-cut... first ball a full diamond from the corner. Second ball at least
a diamond further up the rail. Cutting from like 40 degrees.
Shoots second ball into first, sinks first. Then second magically keeps rolling forward and follows it in.
Probably the largest distance I've seen a 'follow-in' shot happen.

• Cue ball jumps off the slate, onto the rail, rolls down the rail, back onto the slate to make a ball.

I suspect I will never run out of weirdness. That's good.

In tournament play I had an object ball lined straight up with the corner. Eight ball about at the second diamond from the bottom rail and about 1/4 inch off the side rail. I over drew the cue ball leaving myself corner hooked unable to see the 8. I 3 rail kick-banked the 8 and went on to win the next game and match. Best stroke of luck in my life!! I was so energized after that I didn't sleep until the next day.
