Calling Joss Experts ???

Sometimes I read things differently too. Just not this time. I figured Doc was having a tuff day. :grin-square:

Just to be clear, I was not trying to be confrontational nor disrespectful. Just to clarify my original comment on the cue. Chop is one of my favorites here, always has been. And I admire the work you put out and your cues. As I said before, the cue looks great now and personally love love love how the new delrin cap looks. Matt D.

Thank you. Doc is one of my favorites too. Fact, I wish more had his knowledge. Myself included. I was just having fun.

Wow.

Thanks.

The fact is I wish I knew more. I learn a lot from the makers, including you. Nothing replaces experience.

My comment (question) about the rings was sincere, not in any way challenging anybody or anything.

It's just one more thing that says the cue is not a Joss.

Any cue can be repaired or refinished, so one thing, like lack of a logo, or a longer pin, can'r necessarily rule out a maker. So the cumulative points of difference matter.

In addition, I have been interested in this point about metal rings and Joss. I have never seen one.

I had a Tim Scruggs that if this thread didnt say Joss I would have thought that was my old cue. I have had Joss cues back to the late 60"s and never saw one like this, nor a JW like Bill said, in regards to the screw and esp the pin.

I know these pics suck but theyre from years ago, thats a Joss I had refinished for a friend

Excellent Mr. Howard. I'm going to do an old gold letter soin. Great cues.

At Joss Cues when I was still there we used silver rings on a lot of cues.
Most cues had the small Maple squares.
I designed and built all the cues. Dan did the finish work and shafts.

At Josswest I used whatever the customer requested.
Many cues had nickel silver or stainless rings.

The man has spoken, glad you could give the correct information for us!

Cool. Thank you!

I have been waiting to hear about his.

I suspected it as so many of those cues were customs, as you said. So one would think there would be at least some with silver rings.

The question now becomes...where are they?

Why do I ask? Because I don't remember seeing any. And I don't have any pictures of any.

Agree with you Doc. Having grown up in the DC area, and doing a lot of pool playing in the Baltimore area beginning early 70s, I used Joss cues and saw a lot of them. It was probably the most often seen custom cue in the Baltimore area in that time.

I also don't recall any with nickel rings in the joint collars. In the early days, the collars were either plain black, black with maple boxes, or the most familiar black with maple boxes with additional veneers, including maple or implex. Early 80s the centrally located dash rings took over, then about 84 or so, back to plain black collars. There may be exceptions, but I've never seen silver/nickel rings in Joss collars. It would be great if someone has an example of such to show here.

All the best,
WW

Thanks to everyone who joined in with the discussion and gave their thoughts. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

I am calling Bill tomorrow to talk to him about the cue.

My '93 Schlick has several strong similarities, but those specifics are not identical to yours. My weight bolt looks very close to the cue you are fixing, but lacks the circular lines. My joint pin extends 0.95" from the joint. The end of my joint pin looks slightly different. I have shafts from '93, '97, and ~'12 and none of the shaft inserts look like the one in you picture. All 5 ferrules are 1.1" long. My butt plate and handle are not the same size as yours, but my cue is 57.5". IMO, enough similarities to support calling Bill.

Possibly a Jensen Cue, not a Joss.
Resembles a Josswest I had years ago but too many subtle differences.

First Post of Thread

Shaft doesn't match Butt.

(did someone post this already?)

screw the joint pin back into place, obviously it was stuck at one time in the original shaft.

Possibly that's why an oddball replacement shaft came to be.

SCRUGGS, that's a Tim Scruggs.

Thanks for your post. Yes, I agree on the similarities, but not quite identical. The insert on the far left is closest.
