Can anyone explain this Tascarella cue auction?

YOU EVIDENTLY DON'T READ THIS SITE MUCH.......IF YOU DID, YOU WOULD HAVE KNOW WHO BOUGHT THE CUE, AND YOU ALSO WOULD HAVE SEEN ALL THE POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE CUE, AND THE PURCHASE IN THE THREAD IN THE CUE GALLERY.

I THINK YOU NEED TO BE A LITTLE MORE EDUCATED ON THE INDUSTRY BEFORE YOU MAKE THESE STATEMENTS. IF YOU FOLLOWED THE MARKET YOU'D KNOW THAT PRICE IS RIGHT ON LINE FOR THE HOLY GRAIL OF TASCARELLA 4 POINT CUES. I'M ASSUMING YOU HAVE NEVER OWNED A TASCARELLA, WHICH IS WHY YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.

I SEE THAT YOU OWN A RICHARD BLACK CUE. I OWNED 26 OF RICHARDS CUES, AND WHEN I REALIZED HOW MUCH BETTER PETE'S CUES WERE, I SOLD THEM ALL TO BUY TASCARELLAS.

GET AHOLD OF ME IN A FEW YEARS AND WE'LL SEE WHO MADE THE BETTER CHOICE........I HAVE A REAL STRONG FEELING THAT MY CUES WILL BE MUCH STRONGER.

WE'LL GO TO THE NEXT PART OF YOUR STATEMENT.......GO AHEAD AND TRY TO ORDER A CUE. CALL ME IN 6 MONTHS WHEN HE HASN'T EVEN TAKEN YOUR ORDER YET, OR EVEN ANSWERED THE PHONE......THAN YOU CAN WAIT 4-5 YEARS TO GET YOUR CUE.............AND BY THE WAY, YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT PETE WOULD CHARGE FOR A CUE BEFORE YOU SAY I COULD HAVE BOUNT IT FOR HALF THE PRICE FROM HIM. HE GETS 2000 FOR A PLAIN 4 POINT 4 VENEER CUE........DID YOU KNOW THAT? DID YOU KNOW THAT PETE HAS A 4 TO 5 YEAR WAIT? DID YOU KNOW THAT PETE ISN'T REALLY TAKING ANY NEW ORDERS?

I'M NOT SAYING THAT THERE ISN'T ANY MORE SOUGHT AFTER CUEMAKERS, BUT I CAN ONLY THINK OF TWO MAKERS THAT ARE STILL ALIVE THAT GET MORE OF A PREMIUM ON THE SECONDARY MARKET. BUT WHAT THE HELL WOULD I KNOW...........I GUESS I'M JUST MAD AT MYSELF FOR BUYING ONE OF IF NOT THE NICEST FOUR POINT TASCARELLAS I'VE EVER SEEN.

MAYBE I'M A MORON..............WHAT DOES EVERYBODY ELSE THINK........I DON'T EVER SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM SELLING A TASCARELLA IF I HAVE TO.......NOT THAT I SELL MANY

BY THE WAY, I'M RELATIVELY SURE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKS I TOOK A CORNCOB ON THIS ONE.

P.S. IF YOU CAN GET ME THIS CUE FOR HALF OF WHAT I PAID, YOU GET 10, AND I'LL GIVE YOU A GRAND ON TOP OF WHAT YOU PAID FOR EACH.

JUST MY 2 CENTS.........WHICH PROBABLY DON'T MATTER BECAUSE I WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO BUY THIS BEAUTIFUL CUE.

At most, I thought you only overpaid by $500-$700, but then again, how many of this type of cue were ever even made by Pete? That speaks a ton in and of itself.....

The auction bidding pattern looks a little suspicious to me... Ya think this coulda been shill bidding knowing they had a SERIOUS buyer on the hook??

C'mon! $6,500??? I still see no justification for that price other than the fact that someone was willing (read: crazy enough) to pay it. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to slam the buyer... I just wanna know why that cue is worth $6,500.

Maybe Marcus can tell me his motivation. Maybe he was getting phone calls and e-mails left and right from guys that knew about the shill bidders and they were pumping him up to not let that cue get away.

I don't see it. I don't get it. I am sorry Marcus, but I just think you got taken advantage of on this deal and I hate to see that.

At least you have the cue now and might be able to get your money back before Halley's Comet flys overhead again.

TO START THIS, I COULD SELL THE CUE TODAY FOR MORE THAN I HAVE IN IT. I'VE ALREADY BEEN MADE OFFERS, AND I DON'T REMEMBER HALEY'S COMET GOING BY RECENTLY.

SECOND, I'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW LONG YOU'VE BEEN COLLECTING, AND HOW MANY CUES YOU HAVE OWNED. IF YOU'RE BUYING RICHARD BLACK'S THAT IS A DEAD GIVE AWAY THAT YOU DON'T FOLLOW THE INDUSTRY.....LIKE I MENTIONED I OWNED MANY BLACKS, I'M JUST GLAD I GOT OUT OF THEM WHEN I DID. I'M ALMOST CERTAIN THAT MOST OF THE COLLECTORS HERE WOULD TELL YOU THAT PETE MAKES A GREAT CUE, AND THAT THEY ARE VERY SOLID INVESTMENTS. I DON'T BUY CUES FOR THAT, I ENJOY THEM. THIS CUE IS BEAUTIFUL, AND I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH MY PURCHASE.

I'M NOT OFFENDED BY YOUR STATEMENTS(OTHER THAN THE CORNCOB STATEMENT, I DIDN'T APPRECIATE THAT AT ALL) I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK OF MY PURCHASE, OR WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS FOR THAT MATTER.

I KNOW OF TWO FOUR POINT FOUR VENEER, UNINLAID TASCARELLAS THAT WERE UNPLAYED SELLING FOR 3000. SO I'D HAVE TO SAY PETE HAS A PRETTY STRONG MARKET

JUST MY OPINION, WE'RE ALL INTITLED TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE.

Tascarella

Was just waiting to see if you would reply--you are correct in everything--there arent many tascarella experts out there. Anyway, please let us know how the cue hits when you get it in hand. Nice cue!!!

Yeah, yeah... I read all of the nice comments regarding the cue. I agree it is a beautiful cue. But for $6500, I just don't see it. I am not trying to say you are stupid or anything. We all buy based on our beliefs... we belive this to be the most beautiful cue we have seen (or ever will see), we believe it will gain value... we believe the price is fair (or a bargain).

As long as you are happy with the cue and able to afford the price, that is the main point.

It looks like someone (probably someone you know) ran that auction up on you because they knew you couldn't pass on that cue at any price.

I am wondering if you actually saw the cue in person before the auction and if a friend of yours was selling it.

YOU CAN THINK WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT THE AUCTION BEING SHILLED, OR BEING A SCAM, BUT THE GUYS THAT KNOW ME(AND THERE OF PLENTY OF COLLECTORS/DEALERS THAT KNOW ME) ALL KNOW THAT THE AUCTION WAS STRAIGHT UP ON MY END. IF I GOT TAKEN, I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT. WHEN YOU ARE READY TO BUY A REAL CUE, CALL ME AND I'LL FIND YOU A TASCARELLA.

You are correct to guess that I am a hack collector at best. I know a thing or two about cues, but am not an expert. That is why I am asking about your cue.

I understand your anger, but I am really not trying to flame on you. I just want to know why. That's it.

Your cue is beautiful. You are happy with it. Money is made for spending and enjoying life, which is what you are doing with it.

And of course the auction was straight-up on your end. You held the cash!

Peace and straight shooting.

Any cue brokers want to chime in on this?

Sure..

He paid fair market value. If you remember correctly, recently there were some 8 pointers selling in the 8500-10k range a few months back. I have no problem with the price of this cue. Marcus is also the premier Tascarella collector, so to him its worth more than it might be to you. Just like IMHO Bill Morris, was overpaying for Searings a while back, but guess what, I bet he didn't take a loss on a single one.

As far as the rest of the postings here.. the premier cuemaker of the last 100 years probably never made a blank in his life... doesn't really affect his cue values that much. As far as the correlation with Pete, I have no idea. I know people who have been in his shop have seen his blanks. The comparison between BS and PT, is fruitless. There will be buyers for both cues. But I will add that I, highly respect both cuemakers for staying traditional and that means more to me than a few glue lines. Rahh Rahh Rahhh.. Down with cnc rah rah rah..:D

My beef with the cue is seperate from the buying / selling aspect. LOL.. buts its small..

And I guess the Blue Book is pretty much off the mark regarding Tascarellas...
The Blue Book is just a reference. It's not the know all, be all, define all publication on cue collecting and cue values.

One other item..

The blue book does (can) not take into effect the heat index factor of a cuemaker at any given point.

I think Roscoe was agreeing with you that the cue is rare and justifies a premium price.

I think you made a buy that will pay off for you in your pleasure owning the cue and appreciation in value if you ever decide to sell it in the future. :)

Even though he types in all caps, I think he was agreeing with what I was saying. :D

I personally don't think Marcus overpaid for the cue. A shilled auction wouldn't surprise me.....there seem to have been many suspect auctions recently. All in all, though, I think that the price was in-line with the market we all are seeing with some cuemakers' work today. Many forces (and just one being low production) control what the market will bear for these type of cues....and it will indeed be interesting to see where things shake out 5 to 10 years down the road. My bet's the same as Marcus', though.....Tasc over Black...as well as many other of today's cuemakers.

You have the two nicest Tascarellas I have seen, the one you just bought and the one with the ebony blocks inlaid with MOP above the wrap. Dave

Marcus, congradulations on your tascarella! Price is not important when one has a chace to get what he loves and thats a point many people dont take into consideration.Dont buy a high end cue thinking about selling it all the time, buy it because you love it because its all specutive as far as what will be worth what 10 years from now. You have the nicest tas collection I've seen and you should be proud to own them and imo they are a good investment money wise. As far as that auction being run up,I dont think so,Ive delt with Lena before and if anything she must know pt because she has had more tas before,I bought one from her 3 yrs ago.
See ya at vf.
