Experimenting with a new material. Customer wanted a red ferrule on a new break cue. I had this material sitting around from another project and decided to give it a shot. Second time I broke with it I made the 8! The little white ball went in also, oh well.

I thought that would take longer to guess! I cut up a bowling ball for some inlay material and didn't like how it came out. I'll have to beat the hell out of it for awhile more to see what I think.

Pickpocket, You are the Winner on one bowling ball material ferrule!! Let me know if you want it I'll send you one!

I would be honored!

I would love to install this on one of my cues! be sure to send some business cards with it also, so I can refer interested parties to its origin!

Personally, I think it looks cool as hell!

I dig alternative materials and I think there might be something to be said for the contrast of a non-white ferrule against the white cue ball.

Bowling ball ferule....

When you cut your bowling ball how old was it and how deep was the colorful over-coating...I have been thinking about playing with the same material, I despise bowlers and would love to show them what we use those boulders for?

I have to dig up the pics I have of the bowling ball cut up. Used the bandsaw for the surgery. You have to be carefull of the weight that is in the ball, bandsaw blade didn't like chewing into it! The color goes all the way through.

I expiremented with bowling ball material for breakers a long time ago.
You can get them as pen blanks.

Joey, From what I've seen of the material a finish should stick to it pretty good. I'm thinking of cutting up a black bowling ball and using it for joint and butt rings. At the price of the black linen fiber it may be worth the time and effort.

Looks pretty. When you think of the kind of abuse a bowling ball can be put thru, it should be ok.

Just cut it with your band saw?

New style bowling balls have what is called a weight block in them that is made out of very dense materials. I would probably not cut them with a blade that you cherrish as in the late 90's the fad was a titanium core.

As far as the finish sticking to it also in the 90's they came out with a material that is refered to "reactive resin". The total purpose of this material was to soak up the oil off the lanes. Spare and house balls are not usually made out of this material and do not soak up oil. Before I used bowling ball material I would put it in your oven at about 180F for several hours on a cookie sheet and see what happens.

OK...now yer scaring me....what could happen? :embarrassed2:

EDIT: Not that I plan on baking any bowling balls...I'm just really curious....

The reactive resin will hold the oil until it is cleaned out somehow. If you put it in the oven the oil will bake out of the resin and puddle on the cookie sheet. A trick similar to this is used by pro shop guys when a ball becomes so saturated with oil that it will not hook as violently on the end of the lane.

Black balls are softer than plastic colored ones

9 at thThe black bowling balls I have cut a few of those and they seem to be fairly soft, (at the time I used 4 for legs of an entertainment center I thought it was cool wife not-so-much) in fact too soft for joint work.

When you cut it up can you remember if the core looked just like a frisby or an odd shape? Also how old was it or brand?
