Can my cue be repaired?

Hi all,

Generally I keep my temper in check quite well when shooting. However, I had an off night where EVERYTHING was going wrong and in a moment of frustration I slammed the butt of my cue on the floor and instead of hitting the rubber bumper I caught the edge of the butt cap and pieces of it flew everywhere. Just not my night. :(

Cue was about $250 some ten years ago. Helmstetter VIP cue and I have also purchased a predator shaft for the cue which cost me another $180.

My question is can the butt cap be replaced for a reasonable fee? Image of damage is below. Any recommendations for where to get this service performed?

i believe when you slam a cue like that down on the floor.. notice how the rubber bumper goes inside the butt capp.. i think the down force and pressure on the rubber make it expand inside the but capp pushing in an outwards force cause the rubber to crack the buttcap...

i know you did it.. so if you say you hit the edge of the capp, you probably did.. i just know that what i said could be a good cause to cues that explose like that..

Well it looks like Varney will hook you up like new again...just don't be trying what Earl does too much ! :D
 
Antics

Well, a couple of weeks ago, one very good player here, who is always pretty animated was fooling around with, I think, a friend, and went to turn the friend upside down, but the friend still had his cue in hand, and when he went to lift him up, the friend's cue just snapped in two right below the joint in the forearm.

Everyone just kind of looked up and rolled their eyes. I don't know how it was settled. The player is in his mid 30's, not a kid. This type of stuff happens all too often when people are drinking too much or ? stuff, and
emotionally volitile.

Looks like a good offer.

After being repaired you will have a cue with a Predator shaft, Helmstetter core and a Varney butt. A real custom. It will be a true one of a kind.

$50 including return shipping to replace the butt cap sounds like a great deal to me. I doubt that you could do any better than this anywhere! I'd be contacting Varney cues right away if I were in your position to have the repair done ASAP.
 
ChrisOnline has already stated what I was thinking... The rubber expands and shoots buttcap all over the place. I've done it, too...I'm sure many have.

I wasn't even playing anyone, I was shooting the balls in, and shooting fairly well, and when I walked around the table throwing the balls back up one went right back in the opposite side, so I walked around to it again and threw it out and it when into another pocket and I broke mine right then...lol

Another is the cue being 10 years old may have a petrified rubber bumper. I had this happen to a Schon that was my first cue. The rubber just aged, dried out and turned to stone.

Wow, that's interesting. Some manufacturers/cuemakers don't use the bumper up into the buttcap type, I think that would prevent a lot of broken buttcaps if everyone made them like that..

A pool cue should be treated like a delicate, valuable, precision instrument. Period.
 
Bumper expanding...

The bumper expanding, as indicatd by the previous posts, is why I was told by Bob Runde, when he was still with Schon cues, way back when, that the rubber bumpers that he put in the end of the butt caps get tapered at the end of the bumper that meets the bottom of the cue's butt end. When it gets compressed, the taper has room to expand without the cap shattering.

Yes, I think to have it repaired for $50 is an excellent deal. I'm just still chuckling that you "Earled" your cue. :D

Well, this morning I sent my cue to Varney for repair. Looks like l have to practice with a one piece in the meantine. Did a little surfing and many of you had some nice things to say about Kevin. Will post pics when I get it back.
