I've heard good nine-ball players say one pocket is for crotchey guys who can't hang. Is this true? I've had many guys approach me asking to play one-pocket, but won't play me in nine-ball. Could it be that one-pocket is the easiest game to play? Punt, Punt, Shoot, Punt, Punt, Punt. As long as you can bank balls and maneuver a little, you can beat most "one-pocket" players. Boring.

Not exactly.

One pocket is a game of thinking. You have to not only be able to execute the shots properly, you have to be able to determine the best shots to take. You have to be able to do two and three way shots. What I mean is, if you miss you not only have know pretty much exactly how you're going to miss, you have to make sure you don't leave a decent shot, which with good one pocket players could mean a loss of game and you also have to try and leave yourself a good shot also.

I presonally prefer nineball, but hey, to say one pocket is not a game of skill is just wrong. And I, by no means am a crotchety old man LOL. Just barely out of my twenties.

Yes, 1hole is a slower game but that does not necessarily mean it is not a skilled game. I think because it is a slower game with fewer runs of balls, it caters more to the older players whose eyes may not be what they used to be. I enjoy the game because it is more of a finesse game than 9 ball. I enjoy that "punt" part as you call it immensely, and find it really also helps my safety play in 9 ball.

Try a compromise of sorts...play bank pool.

Probably the same drunk woman he "beat" and "won" 100$ from.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am sooooo jealous of his success!

It's a thinking game. What you said is like a chess master asking a checkers player to play chess. I myself don't play one pocket at all, if any, but I enjoy watching it played at a high level. What's so great about the game, is that it's the best way to match up, you are almost guaranteed a shitload of turns at the table, unless you sell out a ball early to a good player, and the top players never cease to amaze even the seasoned players. One pocket is infinately more difficult than 9-ball to 'master', if that's even possible. If you haven't already, get some accustats tapes of Efren playing one pocket, the guy will blow your mind.

No offense, but this reminds me of the time I was watching a World Cup soccer match with my uncle, who only knew football. "boring. they're just running up and down the field kicking a ball..." I don't think anyone's going to change your mind about 1-pocket - you will either learn the game and like it or not like it, or you'll keep your current impression of it. I fell in love with it immediately, because I like chess, and this looked to me like pool's equivalent...still does.

On another note, I was playing a much better player than myself last night, and noticed he couldn't make some shots that would be considered fairly easy 1-pocket banks. If he played some 1-pocket, it would give him an edge he doesn't currently have. He could learn these shots by practicing them, but HAVING to make them in a 1-pocket situation is a different thing altogether.

For the amount of times you've brought this up, you seem to be a little jealous, Mr. Wilson.

Of course! Efren Reyes, considered by many to be the best all-around player in the world, and deadly at one-pocket, is especially "crotchey". Another real "crotchey" player who is excellent at one-pocket is Shannon Daulton. I'm sure they couldn't hang with you playing nineball! You need to change your medication man!

That's exactly my point. I'd have a better chance beating Scott Frost at one-pocket than I would at nine-ball. I've played him, by the way. He got lucky.

1 pocket is the elite game in pool. Good 9-ballers are lost playing 1 pocket(if they don't know the game) because there is NO road map on the table to tell you what to do next. I've played many 9-ballers with the same attitude you have that 1-pocket is for old guys and such. None of them beat me, and could'nt understand why, because they KNOW they play better than I do. All you have to do is go find a good 1hole player and step up, Scott Frost would be a great place to start.....good luck with that.....Gerry

We all aspire to be as big a nit as you when we grow up.

You're a coward. Plain, simple....a coward.

You have no talent for pool and no people skills.

You're a fraud on every count and You know it better than any of us.

How's that for jealous?

Hey Mr. Wilson, when was the last time you won any money playing pool? .................. I thought so. Good luck!

Thoughts ...

I think that the more abstract thinking players tend
to excel at 1 pocket than ones that tend to think in
simple terms. 1 pocket is much more complex than 9
ball. 1 pocket can also teach a player to think more
abstractly, which in turn, makes him a tougher 9 baller.

I would say it is comparable to comparing a good checker
player to a good chess player.

I think a lot of players want to play one pocket to cut down on their "work" load. In nine ball you play for hours get a few games/sets up and a someone starts getting the rolls and next thing you know you are back even. Personally I would rather play one pocket and try and beat them by out smarting them, just move balls play safe and wait for the easy runout. But if that dosen't work I'll break out the nine ball game and try and beat them that way. When someone plays nine ball you have to walk around the table like 45 miles by the end of the night whereas playing one pocket a lot of the shots and safeties just require you to walk around one end of the table. If you are playing someone who dosen't know one pocket you can beat them out of whatever they are going to lose in a couple of hours whereas if you play nine ball sets you could be there all night, especially playing someone that plays at you speed or anywhere around you speed.

I honestly think that you'll find 1p players to play far more games than most 9b players do....

One pocket esentially takes all different aspects of different games and rolls them into one.
