Looking for a custom cue but not wanting to spend too much as I already have several cues. Who makes a decent cue at that price point?

Walter

You can definitely get a custom sneaky for that price. Post something in the wanted/for sale section and you will get plenty of replies.

Can you get one for less than $400? Yep, way less than that price point in fact and for a great cue too. I snapped up the top cue in the photo below a couple of years ago right here on AZB for $250 and it was brand new and it is my personal favorite cue of any that I have owned.

This cue is a Bob Thompson (you can read my write up of it here). My only regret is that I did not buy the cue at the bottom of the pic too. Let that one get away and now I regret it.

The point is, if you are shopping around, there are a number of "under the radar", or "up and coming" cue makers that offer excellent bang for your buck.

Having said all of that, if you wish to have a truly custom cue made to your exact style/specs etc, then I would expect that to cost more. That route is not worth it to me personally, but many feel that it is.

Cheers and happy playing...

Heck, just browse through that section and you can find PLENTY of customs in that price range.

Just be patient and wait for the one that jumps out at you and steals your heart!!!

Maniac (trust me)

Depends how custom you want to go. We do brand new SP and plain janes for $400.

A while back woody woodworth had purpleheart SP's on ebay for like $250

You can get older steve klapp cues CRAZY cheap for what they are.

There are ALOT of options in that price range. The cue market under $1k is CRAZY soft. You can offer a guy asking $550 for a cue, $400 and he might take it. I just saw this happen on a ridiculously nice BCM a couple weeks ago.

Just put up a WTB thread in for sale section, and tell them, I got $400, lets make a deal!

If yiu dont have to have new, you can definitely find great deals on customs. My g/f found a beautiful Espiritu for 300. I'm using a gently used Olney I got for 250. I've shot with a number of cues during my 35 years of play. I wont give up my Olney.

Scott Erwin can build you whatever you need.:)

As a matter of fact, I have a custom order with Scott Erwin right now for $400.

Picture this:
Fiddle back maple butt and forearm, stained golden brown
Black Ostrich wrap
Fiddle back maple shaft natural
Beautiful rings
Fleur di Lis inlays in butt cap and forearm (my spec)

Here is a picture of the cue without the inlays.

@ skyscraper I actually did have a complete custom on order from Leon for under 400. When I saw this one with a hoppe ring and birdseyes in the maple I decided I liked it (and there was no wait) so we made the deal on the "non custom" I have now.

He's asking for a CUSTOM cue. Why are people suggesting pre-made, ready-to-ship items? Custom means made for him, not pre-made.

Many of the ones people have listed here ARE CUSTOM CUES - meaning not mass produced. Custom made jewellery is still CUSTOM MADE even though it was not made for you...

Half the battle is actually knowing what you want...

If you know "exactly" what you want, you can probably find what you are looking for in an off-the-shelf production cue... I'm talking about the specs for tip diameter, tip material, ferule material and length, shaft taper, weight, joint style, grip diameter, balance point, shaft flex, etc... Design should be secondary, but let's face it... many of us like to gawk at our cues and say "wow."

Most of those specs you can measure and define with a number. But shaft flex is the big X-factor, as well as the quality of hit is going to feel to you. And some of your preferences will make themselves apparent over the course of time as you get used to what you have and via sampling other people's cues... (assuming you have friends or other league members with their own, who are friendly enough to allow you to hit a few balls with theirs).

Once you get to a certain point with pool, it's almost like two audiophiles trying to explain to each other why one guy likes old Sansui amplifiers and the other prefers the sound of Pioneer... It can reach a point of extreme subjectivity.

Good luck hunting!
