Cannot Believe How Bad Silver Cup Chalk Is

While I was buying some product from a billiard store, they threw in a new cube of Silver Cup chalk.

I could have sworn that I tried it years ago and found it poor, but couldn't remember for certain. So I tried it again.

I couldn't believe how bad it was. I kept setting up some practice shots with extreme English and miscued every single time. It didn't seem to matter how I stroked the ball. Carefully or not, it miscued.

Then I put on the usual Masters chalk and made the shots over and over again without a single miscue.

Incidentally, this was on a brand new shaft with a new, nicely shaped tip. I continued using the shaft for several sets that day and never miscued (with Masters chalk).

So, is anyone going to reply and tell me that it's their favorite chalk for some reason? Or that I must have had (another) defective cube of their chalk? :grin-square:

Ha I remember earl Strickland tossing a chunk of silver chalk years ago. I think they were a sponsor for a tourney I think he got pissed cause he could not use masters chalk or was it archer

I've been using silver cups for about 3 years and I agree, they suck!
The only reason I use them is because they are the only brand that offer wine color chalks to match the color of my table cloth.
I was offered a box of NTC chalk by a generous AZer here, but I feel the quality of NTC is close to that of SC.

I'm seriously considering changing the table cloth to blue so that I can use other chalks.

you could just use a different color chalk...

I've never had a prob with SC chalk. I use it on my home table and use it to leagues and tourneys.... nary a miss cue to be seen. Of course, I now like Russian Magic Chalk better, but not because SC sucked, it is just "grippier" and I don't have to chalk after each shot, heck or even after each rack......

I am not a fan of Silver Cup chalk either. I ordered two twelve-piece boxes of Masters chalk in Spruce Green a couple weeks ago and the billiard supply company sent two boxes of Silver Cup chalk instead. I took those two boxes up to league night and gave them away (yes, the supply company made right with the order).

I've tried it a couple times in the last year.

It's not as bad as the Sportcraft or Pioneer, but not as good as Flagged Master either.

If the NTC stuff KoolKiller mentioned is the same as the black-label stuff I've found in a couple of the local bars,it's GOOD stuff.

I've still got a stash of mid 90's NTC with a blue Pro Billiards Tour logo on it,and it's as good as anything I've ever used, right up there with pre-Flag Master.

It could be worse where you live, the pool room here has been using the light green Master, which absolutely SUCKS. Tommy D.

I guess I'm in he minority. The stuff seems to work for me, and I always carry my own case around. I've even learned to accept the mess that comes with it because I like it so much. Different strokes.

I think it's all personal preference. I don't care for Silver Cup and I will use Masters if I have to. In the past year I have come into a small stash of Balabushka, Magic, and Blue Diamond, but my personal favorite is Brunswick. I don't know anyone else that likes it
