I believe this shot was taken in the spring of 1986. It is from a set of photos that included one published on the cover of Billiards News in April of 1986. It is definitely Efren in the shot, so I guess this must be right after he came to this country. Though after he was at Reds in Houston, I would guess.jsp said:Hey Bill...love these pics!...even though I too much of a baby to recognize most of the old-timers.
Just wondering on the date you state for this pic. If you say this picture was taken about 25 years ago, that would date this picture around 1982. I thought Efren didn't invade the country until 1986. Or maybe that's not Efren in the picture...LOL.
Yep, that's him.axejunkie said:Looks like Spanish Mike Lebron in there too...

cuesmith said:I'd almost be willing to bet that this was taken in the "green room" at the 1986 Clyde Childress Memorial Tournament in Richmond KY. I have a lot of vivid memories from that tourney. My road partner Gary Spaeth won the Banks division. He was knocked out of the 9-ball by Grady when after a very good saftey by Gary, in a hill-hill situation, Grady, who was trying at the time to change the rules of 9-ball to call shot, made a good hit on the one ball and lucked the 9-ball in. Grady apologised to Gary for winning that way. Earl was beaten first by Parica (The eventual winner of the 9-ball division), which really had him ticked off, then by Efren on the losers side. The one,two punch by the Filipinos really had Earl chirping in the room later. He was really upset that most of the croud was rooting for the Filipinos, who had just recently started making a name for themselves in the US. He claimed that Jose was doing something to him on the rack, because all of a sudden his break was ineffective.
Shannon Daulton was about 14 then and was playing Gary one pocket, 8-6, the breaks and his fouls didn't count! Jimmy Zinder, in this pic and mentioned in another thread, was removed from the tourney room when he, in his excitement over Gary's winning the banks (which didn't actually happen untin a few shots later) fell off the top row of bleachers onto Monroe Brocks (the tourney promoter's) wife, spilling his beer all over her. Knowing Monroe, he was lucky that he was just ejected. Monroe was murdered by a sniper at his home about a year later. For those of you who didn't know him, Monroe owned the "Maverick Club" in Richmond KY and had both Earl and Buddy living there and in his "stable" ! This was long before Earls contract with Cuetec which prohibited his gambling.
Memories!!!! Great pics Bill! I guess when I get caught up a little I'll have to post some of mine from the old days!
just more hot air!

I sure dont remember and I was dating one of his waitresses at the time. One of the players in the pic is Mike "Shoes" Gambony from Round Lake, IL.

Jay, you have to write a book.jay helfert said:I refereed the final match between Jose and Nick Varner. I called a foul on Nick (this is in KY.) and the crowd started screaming. Nick just scratched his head and said "well, maybe that was a foul". Saved my butt.
I beat Lebron, Greg and Freddie in the Banks (sorry Freddie) after losing to Earl in the first round. Then went hill-hill with Bollman and ran four balls in the case game and scratched on my out ball. He came back to beat me. I finished 9-12 out of 32. Think I got $200 back, big score. The match with Dave was worth like one bean more.
I didn't win to many matches. That's why I can remember the few I did. lol
