Carolina Custom Cue - worth $1350?

LOL @ PRODUCTION BLACK BOAR'S. Look in the Blue Book of Cues. How many top end cue makers have made cues in the past that actually had bona fide "model" numbers. Or had a cue catalogue? Most cuemakers are going to come out like a bat out of hell. They'll make a great many cues, and they won't be the best quality. They're making their money off of quantity...and honing their chops by doing the cue making process repeatedly. As they start to turn the corner...their cues are going to have greater detail...and take longer to churn out. They won't have the means necessary, nor the need or desire to put cues out at a blistering pace. They'll get to put out the kinds of stuff they want at a pace that they're comfortable with...that suits them and their business model. All in good time.

I DON'T WANT TO GET INTO ALL THAT, BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH INFO TO PUT MY 2 CENTS IN. BUT I DO KNOW THAT TONY MADE A SPECIFIC LINE OF CUES FOR YEARS.

LOL...just stirin' the pot while I'm sitting here in Quakertown!

on the hit ..of a CC to A Gilbert or

hell i'll put it up on a players..

can't create .cues.. ( CC CUSTOM)
i know cues from oversea tgat play better and hold better value..
i don't know why you are knocking these guys so hard. i have a friend who lives here in n.c. and he plays with a 4 point 4 veneer carolina cue(and for the record he was a semi-world champion during the 70s and 80s. this cue plays as good if not better than my 3 gilberts and 2 bluegrass cues. i have nothing to gain by posting this but, you really should lay off if you have nothing good to say. just go buy yourself whatever cue you prefer and let others form their own opinion. by the way, my buddy went to cc today and ordered a 100+ inlay (ivory and silver) 8 pointer with 4 veneers and ivory joint. this will be thir fanciest cue to date and i'll find a way to get the cue photographed and put on az when the cue is finished. im not saying they are the best thing since sliced bread, but they are definately going in the right direction and the linen wrap on his (my buddys cc cue) is the best i have ever felt, really tight and smooth.

I always thought them to be production cuemakers, but after hearing all this hoo-ha about their work and actually taking the time to peruse their website, I'm inclined to give them more credit. To be honest, I really like that cue that Bill Abbott sells for $1350, but I wouldn't pay $1350 for it, but that's just because I'm poor :D

But anyhow, they really sound like they're a quality team that can make close to anything you want at a relatively low price.

Question...

Ok. Lets say the cues are great. Sharp points...great inlays...great materials. Low price. What does a company like CC, making great cues at $1200...do to other makers with similar work, who are selling their stuff at $2400. I don't think it does much...but you ARE at that point paying for the name on the cue if all else is relatively equal.

Personally, I don't think it does much. CC afterall, has a specific target market they want to reach to -- most likely the people who might sit on the fence with their decision like you described, or people who just want more value for money.

IMO, they will find it hard to $$$ from a more risk-averse, investor-type person who will only buy higher end cues that have established reputations, and will only buy if these cues are selling on the cheap or are a good deal. Peronally, if I had $1500, I would buy a simple Bender for example, rather than an intricate CC, just because of reputation, and appreciation in value that I know for sure will happen.

These guys are still early-stage, and in the world of the tried and tested, it makes no difference how much quality their work possesses....the free market, their cues' playability, and how their worksmanship will stand the test of time, will reveal it for us.

on the other side of the coin, as many have noted, cc has been making better and better cues so that eventually they might become one of the well respected cuemakers. in which case the 1350 cue u buy could end up being worth a lot more due to its level of intricacy. plus i dont think that cue would cost 1350 if u ordered it from cc directly since whoever is selling it probably has raised the price a little.

I Will Try To Find Out What Retail Price Would Be If It Was Ordered From Carolina Directly. If I Find Out, I Will Post It.

Marcus, if the price from CC is cheaper than what Dick is offering, it might not be the best idea to post it cos it might kill his sale....and on their website it seems they price their most fancy cues up to 2000.

Marcus, You make some very good points here!

You Can Order Anything You Want From Carolina. The Eight Point Cue,is From There First Batch Of Eight Points Cues, They Are Now Extending The Points. The Lack Of Rings, Is Because That Was The Way Those Cues Were Ordered.

I Wouldn't Call Them A Custom Cue Maker, But They Are A Custom Cue Shop. A Team Of Guys Building Cues. The Team, Is The Reason That They Can Put Together So Many Cues.

I Would Much Rather Own A Cue That Is Assembled By People With True Spliced Points, Than Buy An Overseas Production Cue. Where Can You Get A 4 Point 4 Veneer Cue, With True Spliced Points,(not Cnc Crap) Built To Your Specs For About 5-600 Dollars?

These Cues Aren't For Everybody, But For The Guy That Wants A Cue Built His Way, But Doesn't Want To Spend 2 G's And Wait 2 Years For It, Carolina Is A Good Way To Go.

I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SYING, BUT I WOULD RATHER DEFEND THE GOOD GUYS AT CAROLINA, THAN TO PROTECT DICK IF HE IS OVER THE RETAIL.

THANKS MARTIN, EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE I HAVE A GOOD POINT.

P.S. I THINK THE GUY ATTACKING CC IS SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD A PAST BAD DEAL WITH CAROLINA, AND I ALSO THINK HE HAS MORE THAN ONE USER ID.

My bad, I think I meant that they price their cues up to 1200, not 2000.

HEY MAN,
NO PROBLEM. I THINK ALL THE BUYERS ON THE BOARD KNOW ABOUT DICK'S PRICES.

Custom Production

is when a shop has the capability to do production runs and the flexibility to make one of a kind cues.

As for overseas cues measuring up - do a search for CBZ cues from Taiwan. They are selling for $700-$2000 each and hit as good as anything made anywhere else on the planet Earth. In my opinion that is - which comes from over 25 years as a player and over 15 years "in the business".

I don't know much about Carolina Customs except that they have promised to make Kelly a cue that has the exact same specs as her current Fury. Now that's a turn of events wouldn't you say? A USA maker copying an Asian cue.

Anyway, enough flag-waving. Good cues now come from all sorts of places, large facilities and spare bedrooms alike.

Ok, here's where this is.

Realizm, is a jilted ex-employee.

Given the facts, you are pushing the limits as I think you have an axe to grind.

I'm not going to shut him up, but I want everyone to consider that fact in listening to his opinion.

Also, Realizm......keep it based in facts not your conjecture because I will not sit and watch you try and attack his business just because you are an ex-employee.

Clear?

Well put... In case there is any question I have semi-detailed timeline on both the duration of "production" cues at Black Boar (limited to the first couple of years) and Bill McDaniel's participation in the first set of cues made.

Can't speak to Carolina Cues and I won't try... picking a cue is subjective...I just hope you find the right cue for you! Good Luck!
