Cary's in Chicago gets a Diamond!

I just left Cary's lounge and Pete installed a brand new 9' Diamond with 4 1/2" pockets today!
For those who don't know, Cary's is located on Devon Ave. in Chicago.
Only 1 table, but FREE POOL seven days a week!

I have a simalar situation here and let me tell you its the nutz. I love the Diamond.
A couple of thoughts...
That's a lot of real estate to give up inside a bar... with no income directly coming in for table time.
And being free, it seems to be that the table will be trashed in no time... and re-covering every six months or so isn't cheap.

For the average non-playing owner, this would be the case. Pete has always had free pool and nice tables. He had an 8 ft. Brunswick before. In fact, he used to have 2 free tables, but Mayor Daley created a law that forced him to get rid of one even though he wasn't charging!
He makes his money from beer not pool. He will and the pool playing customers will keep it nice. I guarantee that.

Nice to hear that the table will be well cared for. Seems like a great bar owner. His place must be up-scale by comparison to most bars I've been to in Chicago.
Actually, I wouldn't call it up-scale at all. It's more of a small casual, local tavern type place in older building. It's a family run business who likes to cater to pool players. I believe Cary was Pete's father. He has since pasted away. So, it has been around for quite a while.
They have a nice beer selection, no food, small band entertainment occasionally. Pete loves and supports pool. I know he has had Mike Massey there in the past. Also has several pool teams who play out of there.
I'm gonna map quest it and visit the next time I'm back home.
I met Peter this year at Derby City, he is a great guy and can't wait to get out to Chicago to check out his place.
Cary's Lounge is a great place with a great owner in Pete. The APA leagues are frequent in that area and Cary's draws a decent amount of the players. Basically there's league every night. You won't find any action but instead lots of good conversation.
The location is super peculiar and parking is street only. Imagine an Irish pub in the middle of India Town owned by a Greek and that's Cary's.

Just got back from Cary's and I can't say enough how awesome it is to have a real Diamond Pro-Am pro cut pockets, right from DCC right here in the back yard!!!!
I have to post this in the DCC forum at some point, but if it weren't for the great time he/we (Pete) had at Horseshoe, it wouldn't have happened. This is a tremendously bold move by a good friend who by all measures, is one of the best guy's I know. What a beautiful table!

Gotta agree with everyone else here: Pete's a great guy, and Cary's is a great neighborhood bar. If you're on the North side, you should definitely visit!

Mayor Daley and his administration have personally attacked the billiard community in my opinion. They are responsible for the removal of many pool tables in Chicago.
It specifically target billiards and directly calls out 1 pool table. As I mentioned before, Pete used to have free 2 tables and he was forced to remove one of them or pay the PPA license.

I grew up blocks from there and now only 1.5 miles west. This is Great to know! Never knew this place existed. Thanks for the post. :thumbup:
