Celebrities and Pool

Someone posted a link to a video of Will Smith playing on a Japanese gameshow that was pretty funny. He's not all that good but you can tell he loves the game and would be a perfect student for a billiards instructor.

PS. Joe your website is blocked from my work (military) because of the following categories:
"Criminal Skills;Extreme;Pornography;Profanity"

Extreme is its own category... how awesome is that???

Yeah, I actually own 2 padgetts. I heard that Tim isn't making cues any more, is that true? If you talk to him, please tell him I said hi!
Thanks about the comedy bit, that was fun to make :)

It's true. He sold some of his machinery and closed the shop. I just talked to him the other day and he said he had finally set his remaining machines up in his house and was going to finish some pending jobs he had. He sounds undecided on whether or not he's going to build more cues after that. I'll tell him you said hi the next time I talk to him.

So you're friends with Max and Rob Saez, huh? I'm pretty good friends with Max and I do know Rob. In fact, he trapped me pretty good once. He came in with a friend of his from New York who was living here at the time (and, at the time, was a known sucker). So, to make a long story short, I gave Rob something like the 8 and a game or two on the wire to something-err-rather. I think we only bet $200 or $300 per set, and I lost a couple sets. This is going back like 10+ years.

This wasn't the first time I trapped myself. I gave Shannon Daulton the 8 once in like 1990. I wasn't any kind of player at the time but Shannon looked like a 12 year old kid! Anyway, I played him a set for $400 and, looking back on it, he was obviously laying down. I had him stuck pretty bad where I only needed a couple more games to win the set and he needed quite a few games. So, at that moment, someone came along and knocked him (gotta love the action knockers) so now I knew I was in a trap. I should have just kept my mouth shut and let him slough the $400 set off to me then quit, adjust, or whatever I was going to do. Instead, I told him, "I'm gonna beat you out of your $400 then quit you!" Heh. That proved to be a mistake because, after that, I didn't shoot much for the rest of the set.

How about James Tolkan from "Top Gun" and "Back to the Future" and a bunch of other movies. I've heard he's a strong supporter of pool and plays a little too.

Mark Kendall, lead guitarist for the rock band Great White. He played in a weekly tourney while the band was here in Grand Rapids, some where around 1996. As i recall he played weak 7 APA speed and finished in the $$.

Steve

Having traveled with him for the better part of 8 years and see all the action he got, I can tell you that he is much much better than a 7 APA. Big John barely beat him for good money.

I used to play with Dorian Harewood back in the 80's at Hollywood & Western. We'd gamble cheap. He loved the game. One hell of an actor too. He was in Full Metal Jacket.

Thanks. How could I forget my old buddy Dorian. He plays a nice game too. Dorian helped me with the first L.A. Open in 1992. And we're both from Dayton, Ohio. I know, who cares?

Will Clark a former baseball star with SF Giants played decent..... He was on a hunting trip in Maryland, he went to one of the local bars..... He held the table for a while... Then he started cherping the more he won... I proceded to play him races to 3 for $100.00. He lost 3 sets..... Great sport

James was in the movie Dick Tracy, and I worked on a pool scene which ended up on the cutting room floor. When we were practicing for the scene, he would come in and challenge me to some Eight Ball. He beat me a game or two as well.

Seymour Cassel was also in that film and he used to hang around Ye Billiard Den also. I once helped him fix a flat tire at 2 AM on Melrose. A few others who showed up in the Billiard Den (as we called it), were Jim Morrison (usually stoned), Arthur Lee from Love, Sly Stone and Judy Garland's composer Jack Ackerman who loved to play and gamble.

ESPN announcer Jay Bilas used to play pool with his roommate NBA pro Mark Alarie at the game room at Duke University around 1985/86 every week. They both played adequately but never played anyone else.

I played NBA pro Johnny Dawkins a few games. He was a good shotmaker and extremely enthusiastic and competitive. He always wanted to play one more game before his teammates dragged him out the door so they could make check in 2 hrs before 7:30 basketball game-time. David Henderson played in the NBA one season and is now coaching Delaware. He was the most consistent winner of the group on the pool table. He didn't like losing to me much in front of that crowd but was a good sport and shook my hand with a laugh.

I wonder if he was with Great White when they had that big fire a couple of years ago, where almost 100 people died. He must have been. Haven't seen or heard from him since.
He was there. I saw Great White in concert in Honolulu, proboboly a month or so before the fire. The other guitarest in the band died in that fire, originally it was reported on the news that it was Mark who died, but turned out to be false report. I heard from someone that Great White was still touring, trying to pay off some of their legal expenses.

Holy Cow! Skittle Pool!

Wow, I had completely forgotten about skittle pool. I was just
a kid when that commercial came out. I thought it was funny.

I asked Santa Claus for it, but he must there must have been
some communication problems, as I ended up getting
"Pivot Pool" instead. Which, by the way had its own commercial
starring Lucille Ball.

I was just googling skittle pool, and actually found one for sale!
(And it reminded me that there were 4 skittle games in the series)

EDIT: I now remember I ended up getting skittle bowl as a kid, as
skittle pool must have been sold out or something. Wow, memories...

Hey Joe! Welcome to AZ....our eclectic little corner of the Net...Lol. :)

Okay, my theory on your lack of discipline in a steady practice routine......SoCal. It's just too darn sunny, got those half-nekked babes running around all over the place, things to do, people to see.....too much in the way of distractions and outdoor activities!!!

Now see, you want to get serious about your game...move to the Pacific Nothwet!  Seriously man, it rains all the time, and we have those wicked windstorms, occasional snow and floods; it doesn't get above 80 degrees too terribly often....hell, sometimes we skip summer all together!! Keeps us indoors, and golly, when we're not takin' in a good bar brawl, watching Fear Factor on a tavern big screen (God's honest truth!), most of us are at the 8' bar boxes, honing our billiards acumen :D

You need to move, man! ;) Lol. :D

Pivot Pool - For those that need to know!

This is the pivot pool game. Check out the "rubber band" like
rails. Unfortunately you had to shoot from the same place all
the time, but you could choose the angle. You pushed the plunger
in a few different depths for different speeds, put the cue on that
little ramp, and pivoted the assembly to aim, and pushed that
little trigger to shoot the cue ball.

I think James Tolkan lives in New York State these days. He competed in the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour event at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York, a few years ago, and everybody was hounding him for a picture, including me! :p

Here's a cute shot of Dennis Hatch, James Tolkan, and Keith McCready at the event!

Just from his facial expression in these two pictures, he looks like more fun than a barrel of monkeys! ;)

Keifer Sutherland used to come around the pool room once in a while back in the 1990's. In fact, I think he staked Morro in a game. I saw Weird Al at Hollywood Billiards (the old one that was downstairs) a couple times. I Don't know if he was any kind of player or not though. Eddie Something-Err-Rather from CSI: New York also plays, from what I understand. One of the NY players that I know apparently sold him a cue at one time before he became the celebrity that he is today. Funny that I can't think of his name because CSI: NY is my second favorite show next to ... you got it ... CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (the Las Vegas one).
