Chalk holders

I've got a few. The chalk dangling from a stick doesn't work for me. I prefer the magnetic holders. I have a metal one that doesn't clip onto my pocket tight enough so I go with the cheap plastic clip. Why? Well, I'm a diabetic and when I get sick my sugar's harder to control than usual. A lot of players won't stay home when they're contagious - they'd rather share their illnesses. So, by not sharing chalk I figure I'm cutting down on germ exposure. Of course, we're still sharing balls and a rack and the bridge, so it probably doesn't do much good, but it's the thought that counts.

I may have seen it posted, but I forget....does Rich still wear a hat all the time, when he's playing, that is?

Yes, he still dresses up when he plays and he wears his hat. Check out the pictures from the article I posted about his trick shot show at The Parlor. There is a link where you can see the pictures of him.

I've tried the stick kind of holders and didn't like them. It was more trouble than it was worth.

The easiest way to handle chalk, IMHO - let's say you shoot right-handed and chalk with your left - is to always set it down on your left before you bend down and shoot. After your shot, you pick it up with your left hand and chalk on your way to your next shot, and set it down on your left again before you shoot. That way there is no running around the table to get the chalk (except on your first shot if it's left on the table). It's always right there and more easily grabbable than if it is in your pocket or magnetized to your belt.

I like this idea, simple and effective!

I think this is the best way also with one thing added. Carry your own chalk to use and take it back to your seat with you when you finish your inning. When you start again carry it back to the table and follow the procedure above.

I use house chalk many times. When it's junk or has a big hole drilled in it whereby you cannot chalk properly and end up with chalk alll over the ferrule, I get out my own.

also, a top snooker player told me that it's actually illegal to put your chalk down on the table. i've never verified this, anybody know if it's true?

I don't think it's illegal per se, it's just that it can be construed as marking the table, so I'm sure the ref would tell them to remove it in at the risk of forfeiting the match. In normal club play the house chalk would be on the rail for everyone to use, but in league action I've never seen anyone not carry their own chalk.

One difference I've noticed is the wear pattern on the chalk. Pool players seem to just bore a hole down the middle, and chalk up without looking. Snooker players tend to paint the chalk onto the tip in horizontal swipes while inspecting which parts of the tip need chalk, so the chalk wears down with a diagonal cross pattern.

I have tried the magnetic and stick Holder. The magnetic kept falling off of my belt and the stick made my pockets thread bare. I now cue one of these.

I will buy at least 3 at a time to get a better discount. Will occasionally give one away or sell it depending on the person. It helps to keep my case cleaner. I lay it on the table when shooting and usually pick it up when my turn has ended. If I forget and leave it the other player normally will leave it or remind me that I left it on the table. I don't try to chalk the tip thru the hole. I will remove the cover and turn it over so the whole top of the chalk is exposed.

My chalk holder

I have used the magnetic clip style, and then I just started to stick my chalk in my pocket, because of the weak magnetic. I spent more time trying to find my chalk on the ground in a dirty bar, then actually chalk my stick because of the weak magnet. So I just started putting it in my jeans pocket. But then a friend of mine made me a pocket chalker, and I strted using it and liked it a lot. The "stick" is the end of a deer antler with my initials engraved in it, and one of those old style pool table rubber chalk holders connected with a string of leather to the antler end. Let's just say it looks pretty cool. He can make more, and I can post pics later if anybody would be interested in seeing it.

Just let me know.

If I'm playing in a tournament or playing for money I hold the chalk in my left hand when I shoot. If you hold it with your left ring finger you can still get a comfortable bridge. If you need to shoot over a ball just lay it down but be sure to pick it up before you walk away so no one messes with your chalk.

If I'm just playing friends, chalk stays on the table.

No, I am talking about a tiny little apron, just big enough to hold chalk, that Karen wears. I asked her once where she got it and she said someone in Ireland made them, with no other helpful hints than that. Since she always wears black pants, it's hard to find a picture of her wearing it, but this one shows it pretty well. In fact, it looks like she is modeling it just for you! :p

And you can watch how she gets it out and uses it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38V6JTE0tPE

Linda, Billiards911 (formerly BeadsandBilliards) makes a chalk pocket. Any of the UK billiards sites also carry their versions. They are normally of leather, with a clip on the back to slip over a belt, or pant waist. They are relatively inexpensive.

Now, what Karen is wearing in the pic looks almost like those neoprene cell phone 'buckets' for your car. They have a piece of tubing in the top, which keeps the top open, but will lay flat against itself. I bet that if you cut off the bottom of one of these to shorten the length a bit, and then re-sew it closed, it would work equally well. Actually, I think I may head over to Wally World or Fred Meyers (where I have seen them) and pick one up and try it. I have been looking at these chalk pockets for a long time, as they would definitely keep the errant chalk dust off your clothing.

I posted this in another thread, but I always put my initials on my chalk with felt tip pen. Helps keep my chalk from skipping away. Sometimes.

I don't like any of those "chalk gadgets"!! Most of the places I play at have plenty of chalk. When I am shooting I just put a piece in my pocket or set it on the rail near by.

I have used the Ultimate Chalker for years. It has a strong magnet, and the metal chalk holder pinches the sides of the chalk, so you don't have to deal with those enclosed cases with a hole in the top. In the years I have been using it, I only lost it one time, and that was when I realized how much a part of my pre-shot routine it had become.
There are plenty of good players that use them, and plenty that don't. It really comes down to what you are comfortable with. And if someone sees me using it and thinks it translates to easy money, great! I can always use some easy money!

New chalker on the circuit...

These all have a snap strap cover that keeps the chalk dust out of your case. The pocket chalkers have a larger 'Horn' handle that won't fall out of looser fitting pants also.

There are several threads and posts about our products, simply search "pocket chalker" or "pocketchalker" in the wanted/buysell forum.

Hope to hear from you.

Doug

PS...These are ALL lifetime guaranteed against stretching and strings breaking. (Beer spillage not covered)

I use the magnetic type and have gotten into a good habit of putting the chalk on the table (not pool table) while I and not playing and this usually keeps it from getting knoocked off and lost. I rarely have off get knocked of while walking around the table.

I have used the stick type and it just was not for me.

I play in a league and alf the places that we play out of either don't have anough chalk or it is worn down pretty bad. I also prefer to use Masters blue which none of the places that I play out of seem to use. Most place use Masters or Silver Cup green.
