Chalky's in Carbondale, IL already shutting down

I also made side money in college playing in the school pool room.
I beat Wayne...nobody ever beat Wayne. We played for $20, he only had ten and a Tip Tapper. I still have the tapper.
Side $$$ is entirely different than acting like you paid for college by playing pool lol.

Sh!t, I played my way through life since probably 7yrs old.
Jason<-----did NOT pay his way through life since 7

On top of that SIUE has their own billiard room attached to the bowling alley, so the college students don't have far to go for good equipment, I believe it was free for them to play too.
Interesting thought about SIUE marrying up with SIUC.
Years ago there was a marriage with SIUC the parent & SIUE a branch. SIUE split off on their own.

I've never seen the Edwardsville Student Center but it sounds like the same setup as Carbondale.. Bowling and Billiards in a large space. Carbondale SC was set up when Brunswick was selling all the colleges their stuff, so there was Brunswick Lanes and Gold Crowns. 1 Carom table. No Snooker.

Nearly 100% of the pool action didn't happen at the Student Center. I was all on the Strip in town.

Don't be a dick. You don't know anything about me or my past.
I'm probably working toward probation but I'm getting sick & tired of reading comments that don't add to the topic .

Sorry, just in a sour mood.
Maybe jail is where I belong.

I am sorry for the closing.
I had plans to go there.

Carbondale is a small town I am 65 years old I ride my bike everywhere students could get to chalkies easily if they wanted to and they did I believe many things could have happened but my favorite is the girlfriend wanted to dance studio instead of the boyfriends pool hall

So the University pool hall is open to the public very reasonable rates I'm there many days of the week as are other players

If I had a dime for every person that "put themselves through school" I'd have retired before I started to work. Did you steal your Daddy's cue?
Pool got me to drop out of college! I'd rather hang out in the aforementioned "Campus Cue" pool room at Oklahoma U. than attend classes. I got beat up daily by the hustlers there but that was all part of my pool education. There was actually two more pool rooms in Norman back then (in the 60's). One was just a few blocks away, also close to the campus. It was true old school, with eight or nine tables all in a row and wooden benches along the wall for the players and sweaters to sit on. I never got a game in there! There was one other very old poolroom right on Main St. in downtown Norman. I would often go there late at night to practice, since no one from school was ever in there, except crazy me. The student union at OU had a large poolroom with maybe two dozen tables. That's where I first got hooked on pool. But when I found the Campus Cue and some real pool players (Don Owens and Dick Lane among them), that became my new home for the next two years.

I took one more try at college, spending one semester at Ohio State. They also had a nice student union with tables but that was no fun for me. They would not let you play 9-Ball there! Can you imagine that ? Soon enough I found out that Danny Jones had opened a room on the other side of Columbus and I became a regular commuter. My last taste of college was spending a couple of months in Gainesville, FL at Florida U. where my brother was attending Med school. Same story in their Union building, gambling was verboten and especially 9-Ball. I was getting pretty good by then and got myself matched up with the school champ. We played on a back table and he agreed to a set of 9-Ball if we played 100 points of Straight Pool after. $50 a set, a nice bet back then. I won the 9-Ball and was getting drilled in the Straight Pool when my brother walked in. He had NEVER watched me play and now he was going to see me getting smothered. I was down something like 90-28. UGH! The guy was toying with me and left me an open table. Something came over me and I was just mad. I started running balls and then racks. I'm sure I had never run 50 balls before but on this day I ran 72 and out. That's still my highest run ever.

So NO, I did not work my way thru college playing pool. Pool used college to work it's way thru me! I always did delight when someone used that line on me later on in my little pool career. I couldn't wait to get them on the table!

Looks like people liked their food but not pool.
Our non-alcoholic pool room / grill has managed to survive 27 years in a super rural location on 95% food sales and 5% pool table rental income, and an owner who loves the game and is committed to keeping the pool room and grill going for all the regulars.

The bottom line though is that labor force shortages, particularly cooks, has us struggling to remain open unlike we’ve ever experienced before.

I was just told by the TV that there are a Million more people working than before the C closures, how can there be a labor shortage?

hadn't been there in decades but you wanted to go see a pool hall? ok.

That seems to be the question that no one has been able to answe in regards to service related jobs, where at least for around here there are Help Wanted postings up at virtually every business.

There is no need anymore for a federally mandated $15 minimum wage law, as it’s impossible to find anyone willing to work for less $ than that.

I wish you the best of luck! Someday I hope to swing by.
