Change Must Be Made

My 2cents

Guys,

be careful what you wish for.
I realize that no one is wishing any ill will towards danny, but
it won’t be long before his commentating days are over for good.
Many of us have enjoyed listening to him for many years.
Any time i have listened to him or been around him he has been nothing short of a gentleman.
To me & many others that goes a long way towards deserving a pass on getting a little annoying while listening to him every so often.

On one occasion while talking to danny, a friend of mine brought up something that happened long ago at a tournament they were both playing in:
A young player was shooting against erving crane. (probably the last straight pool tourney that mr. Crane competed in).
The young man was, to put it mildly, being very disrespectful to mr. Crane.
After the match, to put it mildly, danny let the young man know that what he had done during the match was unacceptable & wouldn't be tolerated again.

Just to state it again:
The guy is a legend, sure he ain’t perfect, but for khrist sake, just let it go.

Slim

I had to turn the commentating off on the Majid/ Davis match. Was his name Billy with the monotone voice that doesn't know how to play pool. This guy was awful.
Favorites are Mark and DD working together. Its great hearing DD and Mark sparring on how to shoot a shot, along with the road stories and history of the players.
I really don't' care too much for a detail play by play all the time. There's got to be a mix.

I really enjoy Danny in the booth. I was just thinking yesterday that I missed the commentary of Danny, Billy, and Grady. Some of the new commentators are kind of boring...sorry to say it. We are getting a lot of play by play and no color.

Teacherman...I mean no disrespect....but I bought your stream for the Bergman/Shaw match. Your play by play/commentary was mediocre at best. I truly believe it takes a lot of talent/experience /personality/humor to succesfully do a commentary play-by-play of any live event.

Danny D gets a lifetime pass with me. He was fantastic for years, especially when he was paired up with Billy Incardona. I know he's getting towards the end....but I still would take DD over damn near anyone else I've ever heard in a pool broadcast/stream.

I'm with you on this.

My only criticism of Danny is that when he's alone at the mike, there will be quite long periods of silence...like he has no one to talk to. He seems to forget that there are people watching the stream.

But I love his stories...I've always wanted to meet him as we share some background, - I was also a serious bowler when I was young.

Can't stand listening to Danny, especially if somebody disagrees with him (or doesn't agree that Danny's shot is the one and only shot worth shooting). In Morra's match Sunday night, he didn't realize Morra's opponent had ball in hand after Morra scratched and started arguing with the other guy about why he would shoot a shot from where the cue ball was lying. That's just where it was sitting at the time. He also let out a line, "he's got a good angle to get to the angle".

I can respect his knowledge of the game and his experience, but everybody's time comes. For baseball fans, look at hawk harrelson in Chicago. He's got a wealth of knowledge, but his commentating has become atrocious.

To me, Billy I is the best commentator of them all. I agree with most of the pros and cons of Danny D. I can tolerate Danny D's commentary, even though he's not my favorite.

I think that commentating is similar to watching the pool matches themselves. After watching the most skillful players play, like Shane, Alex, and Dennis, I find it hard to enjoy watching matches of the much lesser skilled players.

I really like hearing Billy I commentate, so when anyone else is in the booth, I find them less enjoyable to listen to.

Accu-stat should charge $100 for gems like that! lol

DD is so bad half the people turn off their speakers. Boring commentators don't warrant having to turn off the speakers. That ought to tell you something. I used to like his commentating and defend him when he actually did commentate, but he has been going down hill for years and the last three years or so he has been horrendous. He just rambles and says the same old dumb things that weren't funny 5 years ago. Has no business being on a paying stream.

Agree, Danny is one of the best. Sure he's getting old, and rambles on, but Pat Fleming realized a long time ago that Danny is pure gold in the booth, as was/is Grady and Billy. I think putting him in with Mark was a risk just because of the different personalities. But as far as Danny goes, he can commentate a turtle race, and I would listen.

I'm with what looks like the overwhelming majority on this one. Danny is ok with me!

I have no problem with criticism of my commentary. The Justin/Jayson match was the first time I've ever done it for a professional event. Mark Wilson has done all of our past events but he wasn't available for that event.

But that won't stop me from speaking the truth. When one commentators job is to baby sit the other....it's time for change.

I like when peoples admits they have to better themselves too.
Lot of truth at this post.

I fail to understand why pool would be different from other sports, commentators come and go. In my opinion Danny's best days as a commentator are definately behind him. Might be time for him to think about hanging em up.

Everyone has a bad day. Yes it's true that Danny doesn't know every new 21 year old Asian player. But not many people know about the Asian players. Most of the time Danny does a great job. The majority of the time he picks the right shot on play by play and has his own unique way of describing the shots and strokes. I like commentators that talk about the options of various shots. I think Danny and Jeremy do that as good as any of the few great commentators the pool world has. Danny also has color and provides many interesting and funny nuggets of information. Also, this is Pro Golf. The audience is a tribal following at best. Why deny an old man the time of his life? He's coherent and funny and knowledgeable and brings some great stories. And so I vote that Danny stays..

Couldent agree more! Teacher needs to be taught!

Compared to Gibbs, Geoff, and Pete, I thought Mark & Danny were actually very good.

...just wish he hadn't told that silly Titanic Thompson story...that was ludicrous.
