Change pin question.

I actually really like the uni-loc pin and have been offered to buy a nice Mezz cue. The cost of getting predator shafts with the United joint i ridiculous soooo I was wondering if you can install a uni-loc pin instead of the original 5/16-14 pin and still get a nice solid feel? Thanks in advance.
 
In it's function, how is the United joint different than a std. 14 thrd. pin?
I believe that most any shaft with a 14 thrd insert will fit this cue.
I could be wrong but we won't know that until you've tried one.

Sent a standard Atlas 14 insert to a AZer with a Mezz and the insert would not thread onto the pin...something is different.

Hey there! The united joint is just really tight fitting. Don't know if they altered the size of the threads or ig it is the pilot but they seem to have some special formula. I tried a Tiger shaft with the united joint and they fit really nice. But the lucasi hybrid didn't fit nice and snug, neither did the Predator.
 
I have had problems supplying J/ps that fit , I gave up on anything other than standard . GL Jim

Hey Joey,

Before Bill Stroud made his bones as a visionary in this area, there were a lot of people that considered a radial pin the biggest bastard. Now look and see how many CMs are using them.

If something is advantageous to an engineering function of an item, ie. fit of a radial pin, then it will be judged over time.

These radial pins in different minor sizes ect, are a function of marketing for the competing companies, IMO. That makes it even more confusing as someone who is not experienced may think every radial pin is a standard.

Not being a person who wants to be an expert on radials, I just had a customer with this situation and I referred him to Ryan and everyone is very happy.

Bill's radial fixed the bigget problems with the regular 3/8 10 then.
Taps walking and shaft threads becoming loose real fast .
Before radial came out, there were a ton of bastards already.
Most were made not for functionality imo, but to profit from future shaft/arbor sales, identification and style.
Imo, any acme 3/8 pin isn't going to hit any better than 3/8 11.
One cuemaker insisted his bastardized 3/8 pin was better b/c it had better contact, blah blah blah.
Which was funny b/c two of the players who endorsed his cues won the US Open and World 9 Ball after they no longer played with his cues.

The only difference in the united joint is:
The mezz uses a full 5/16X14 joint screw, which is actually very nice if you have a full size tap. Black Boars and Tascarella's also use a full 5/16X14 screw
Standards from different supplier range from .306, .308. Atlas has a .310 but the pitch is to deep so it still has slop. Hope this helps.

A lot of people still use the 3/8X10 regular screw, the problem isn't the screw, it's that the tap is wrong. The acme is also nice, if you grind, perfect, if you tap, it requires a 2 pc. tap set or, unless your tap is actually 3 inches long to allow for the steps needed to do it without tearing. The answer to the next question is:, Yes Sir, I have them, dies too. :thumbup:

Speaking of a different type of pin, Ray Schuler's interference fit piloted set up has had 12 world championship players win using his cues exclusively. Most are 3 Cushion but 4 are HOFers with Cuelemens and Sang Lee atop of that list.

I'm not touching wood pins for sure.

I delivered work to Seyberts today and while I was there I checked one of my Atlas 14 thrd inserts
on a Mezz cue with the Unified pin.
Guess what??? The insert screwed on like it was made for it.
If anything, it was a little loose.
IIRC, I may have built a Predator shaft or two for the Mezz cue and used a std. 14 thrd insert.
The only modification was to trim the pilot on the insert to size.
If there's a difference in this pin, I'm not aware of it.
