barry seems intent on making the tourney even bigger which we should all comend him on-i dont agree with hats or foriegn seeding-but in the same sense as unfair as it is,most of these guys are going to get tortured by some shortstop or regular open class player so thank the middle east for
sending us 6-8 bye rounds for our guys to loosen up on
maybe one of our az friends catches one of them and plays his way into a chance to do some damage in the tourney

i agree john but do i hear OSHA approaching, steel toe boots(balls leaving the table) hard hats(overhead lighting & camera equip.)Big Brother brings you the US OPEN. ha!!

Are there 8 or more Filipinos who don't have to meet until late in the tournament?

My offer was tongue in cheek but let me do the math and we might have a real bet.

If it's mathematically impossible then of course it's no bet. I will get back to you on it after I see the brackets and the payout schedule.

You won't find any other country placing foreign players, but then again why should they and we shouldn't either.........top 32 players get seeded after that, take the draw and play!

He really doesn't need to cater to anyone. For crying out loud this is the U.S.Open! Every pool player alive wants to try and win this thing. They will play no matter the format or the seeding or whatever....
If he wants to cater to someone then he should cater to the guys that come every year knowing they will have to play beyond thier abilities to have a chance at the title....
Give us free beer and food or something like that...:thumbup:

From the other end of the argument. The 14 hours Philippines to West Coast flight and its associated expense is really quite a burden specially since there's just 1 tournament worth participating in for this trip.

In consideration for the above, a World Professional Pool Org should exist to streamline the scheduling of tournaments so that everyone benefits. Maybe do tournaments in 4 season countries during the summer months and do winter tourneys in 2 season countries where the winter temps are milder. Ummm, do like the birds?

You can wear hats????? You've got to be kidding me!! Next he'll let them play in t-shirts, shorts, and sneakers. That will look professional!! One of the few tournaments in the country where you were required to dress decently and they were never allowed to wear hats before, why now???
And the draw is nuts, too. Barry, c'mon!!!!

In Puerto Rico and many South American Countries, ranked players of several countries are placed separately in the brackets. They wont meet until the second to fourth round of the winners bracket depending on the number of players. This gives opportunity for players to meet against top notchers, testing their skills against each other.

In several tournaments I've done in PR, some of the top notchers have not advanced in the winners bracket to the 2nd or 3rd round because they were caught off guard by the allegedly lesser skill players! What happens then is that the allegedbly lesser skilled players have an additional incentive to try to continue their "lucky" run. It turns out that this is good for the tournament players, fans, and the venue.

Obviously half the players that lose in the first round will not be happy, but then they still have the one-loss bracket to make their advances.

I have no problem whatsoever with what Barry has done with the US Open. Unfortunately since the US has so many good players, and they are in majority, it will eventually have excellent home players facing each other before facing the foreign players. But then you cannot make everyone happy. Somebody has to win....
 
I did not think the "new" rule did the filipinos any good though, 4 players ( Django, Kiamco, Corteza and Alcano) still ended up in one bracket..

I can understand the one banning the music players as it does look kind of silly to see players playing while wearing them. I don't understand banning ear plug.

Hats I can understand as some people can't take the glare from the lights. Plus if pool is a sport then allow people to wear sporting attire - to a degree as I don't really want to see Buddy Hall in spandex.

I think I will bet on the Filipino contingent this year to take home most of the money from the prize fund. Any takers???

Earplugs MAY give an additional advantage to a player. I like them but even when wearing earplugs you can still hear conversations. The volume is simply reduced and it is a stupid rule. Maybe I should get a pair of hearing aids.

US Open or the "BARRY" Open

The more I read about this situation, the more the name should be changed to the 2009 "BARRY I can do what I want, personal open". My respect for the 33 year history of this event has been clouded and pool gets another black eye.

Kind of like when the courts allowed th golfer in the PGA to drive around in a cart when the rest had to walk.
 
Amazing

All of these rules and the player playing the best the whole week won and the player playing as good or as close as possibly came in second.

BTW - Earl looked like he was at the shooting range when he played. He looked like Mickey Mouse. I also believe it is hard to make people stop wearing hats when Raj wears the head gear he wears with no penality.
