Chinese 8 Ball World Championship March 13-20

the main difference imo is that its an overall tougher game

margin for error on shots is tiny, you must have very good fundamentals

8 ball 2.0 so to speak,

one rule change i'd like to see is that the breaker gets the next shot whether he pockets a ball on the break or not

LOL, yes that about sums up Ko's performances not only in this match but in many of his matches in last 6 months, And the irony is his breaks in most of the match were probably some of cleanest I have seen compared to some of the other players. Balls spread out nicely, no balls near the rail, open table that allowed relatively easy runouts. If he does break dry, his opponent usually runs out :D

Very good points. I agree. Johnnyt

Thanks for keeping us up to speed as always!

This game is great to watch, though it does make me feel like a bit of an idiot when I mess up a runout on tables with pockets twice the size!

A change of balls?

I'm of the opinion that this tournament, although excellent, would be improved somewhat if casino balls were employed instead of the traditional spots and stripes. It would certainly render the viewing experience more enjoyable and, I believe, be condusive to a more fluent and attacking approach from the players.

Appleton down 8 to 4
He closed the set 9 to 13
He made balls from everywhere on the table

Daz shot great...and moved even better.
If Big Ko had half his 8-ball knowledge, he would be a favorite in this tourney.

It's kinda strange to see Darren's name in Chinese.....
...didn't know he was such a character.....

Darren and Mick Hill are in the Semis. The Chinese are finding out they aren't the only ones who can play this game. ;)
Darren has so much heart. I think the Chinese are a little afraid of him. They quiver a little when they play him. Mick Hill shoots straighter than Tom Mix. He doesn't waste any time and just fires 'em in.

Glad to see the world getting to see the talents of Mick Hill. He's used to playing with a 96 gram cue ball, but practices a fair bit with the 140 gram snooker balls. He's struggling a little with this 160+ gram cue ball but his pattern brilliance and straight shooting is doing the job.

I'll be playing an E8B tourney against him in month or so. Hope I don't draw him first round.

Tom Mix? You're really dating yourself Jay. :) Johnnyt

So the first semifinal Mick Hill v Li Bo started earlier at 4pm local instead of 6pm local
Hill showcased supreme potmanship and cuemanship blowing away his young opponent 8-0 in first half before his opponent won a rack. Thru to final winning 15-9
Very impressive stuff as Hill was making those tight pockets look like buckets . I think he is better shooter than Jayson
Would be great to see him at upcoming W8B in Sep cos he will open some eyes and mouths

Is the sound working for anyone else, the ustream adds have sound, but not the actual game, so I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the feed?

No sound. It was hit and miss yesterday too. No worries, great stuff here.

Spartan, can you confirm tomorrow's finals times? Is it split into 2 sessions and race to 21? Is the 2nd session 7am est?

There has never been any doubt that the best E8B players can make it in pool and win big tournaments - Shaw and Appleton are two of the best examples. Mick Hill is a great player who should, and very probably would, do well at pool. For reasons known to himself (and they are surely very good reasons) he has never entered the arena. There has always been a doubt though about the integrity of the E8B game - it has a small white ball ffs and has had anti-pool rules (but is, to be fair, moving towards having some proper ones - nobody wants to see a"professional" pool player rolling up to a ball with no rail after contact because it's........)

These are two different things - the quality of the players and the quality of the game. It would be great to see Mick Hill having a go at it but I suspect that, win or lose, he'll take the money and run back home.I hope I'm wrong.
