Chinese 8 ball

Here's Gareth Potts saying he prefers ball in hand to two shots carry or two shot don't carry or two shots to the wind.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VJW7GbArVU

He makes a hash of it at the beginning but does articulate it better as the video goes on. Anyway, one of the best E8B and C8B players on the planet supports my view that A8B rules are better than E8B rules (he proposes C8B rules should be played on English tables and they are virtually identical to A8B ones - and his reasoning is sound). He must have some pretty good sponsorship going on to not take up the real game - but I think he also lacks the let's do it attitude of the Appletons (classy fellow) and the Boyes' (well never mind he's got balls) of this world.

I'd really like to see Gareth Potts playing on a 9 footer with them there buckets.

If Gareth Potts came into American Pool I think he would be a top contender for sure. That guy is a true pleasure to watch.

Yes it is my opinion and that of others. Many others will disagree - but they are usually those who think that "American" pool isn't "real pool" which, if you think about it, is a bit ridiculous.

Yep the WPA recognizes blackball but doesn't recognize C8B but recognizes C8B tournaments but not E8B ones - as you alluded to in earlier posts, the WPA is a ropey organization. It's a shame because such a great game has a shambling wreck of an organizing body.

The WPA sanctions one form of E8B (blackball) that has introduced some proper pool rules to the English pub game to make it more like real pool. It doesn't recognize the other set of rules. This is a step in the right direction - the tables might be different but the rules should be pool rules, not silly "two shots carry" and block the pockets stuff dreamt up by a drunk Alex Higgins and some old snooker farts with real ale dripping from their beards. We are a long way off but if the pool played on UK style tables gets closer and closer by stealth to proper pool rules then we have a game.

And it really isn't close.

Definitely showing your lack of knowledge (and research ability).

I'll rest on saying "happy new year" young man

When Mosconi was a kid all he ever played was Chinese 8 ball.

He must be turning in his grave - all these fandangled "foreigners" talking about games called pool and not really actually pool at all - and them there foreign chaps winning the tournament with his name on too. Year after year after year..

How dare people think the USA don't rule the world and stuff..

at the moment, American are getting smoked at Chinese 8 ball

Americans play spin and pocket speed and tighter pockets take away from that style and provide an advantage to the snooker/chinese 8 ball specialist

I'm loving chinese 8 ball at the moment, time will tell imo if becomes a game of pocketing only or allows the creativity of pool players to progress

I'll say this also, at the moment, Mark Selby, the current world champ in chinese 8 ball and number one ranked snooker player and former world snooker champ has my vote as the single best cue sports player ever and i hope he competes alot more in pool and I wanna see alot more chinese 8 ball for the next while

great game

Think you will find Mr Appleton is the reigning C8B world champion lol

This must be research day!

I try to look at most of the final matches (8,9,10 Ball) for the big tournaments. Dynamites performance/win was IMHO the best final in 2015.

Darren was right. Pool players have no chance to win in Chinese 8 ball. I turned Shane off last night...and that's a first. Shaw should go to China and try Chinese 8 ball. I think he would do well. Johnnyt

I think you are dead right.

I'm not sure how much your AP players, like Shane, actually play 8 ball on a day to day basis but the likes of Appleton, Shaw, Potts and to a degree Selby have been brought up on it and can see patterns instantly.

Here's a video of Shane running 8 racks in a row. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dee4fgxEC68

He can definitely play 8 ball when the conditions favor his fundamentals.

For sure. I was just pointing out to VoiceofReason that Shane is no hack at 8 ball.

Just Chinese 8 Ball :p

Thank you!

I did start by saying:

"I'm not sure how much your AP players, like Shane, actually play 8 ball "

And I also rarely, if ever, see reports or forums relating to AP 8 ball tournaments..

What I want to know is there's a chinese version of Azb where someone is saying that they should change the rack cause the 2nd and 3rd ball is going in and the guys run out too much.

Saw the Potts match, look like he was struggling a bit. He lost to a guy who's name is two across with a line down, a slanted like with a little hook and a little line not touching anything.
