Clean or dirty shaft

I clean my shafts about once a week and take them to a cue shop about once a month for a real good cleaning and burnishing. After the visit to the cue shop the shafts are very smoooooth.

My new friend who is a really good player tells me that cleaning my shafts makes them rough. That the dirt in your shaft fills in the pores and makes the shaft smooth when you stroke it.

I gotta agree with your friend. I never clean my shafts unless they get sticky or if its humid.

I don't clean mine. Just wipe it down with a slightly damp paper towel (same one I dry my hands off after washing them) and put it away. On the other hand I have customers that bring in their shafts every couple of weeks for a tune up. Glad everyone is not like me or I would be broke.

i shave down chalk and rub it into my shafts. i can't stand 'em all smooth. never understood people who did. shafts seem to play better when they're sealed up with chalk and oil from your skin.

You COULD make the shaft rough IF it isn't sealed and you allow it to get too wet.

Water can swell the wood and raise the grain. That would make it rough.

A damp cloth or towel quickly up and down, followed by a dry one immediately and there are no problems.

Don't forget to clean the tip of chalk before putting it back in your case. Lining the tubes with chalk from your tip is BAD.

Dirty shafts are also scratch your bum and pick your nose shafts.
I'm glad that you like them dirty because I couldn't touch them.
Who knows where they have been or the hands that use them.

Sorry, I see a dirty shaft and I see a dirty person.

I see clean shafts and i see guys that spend so much time debating aiming systems and resale value that they forget how to play.

I don't use aiming systems, nor do I have expensive enuff cues to care about resale value.

However, I don't scratch my bum with my shaft.
And I don't want your shaft near my bum either.

You guys are just dirty bum scratcher shafters.

Gee, Murray are we twins :)

If your cue guy seals the shaft after cleaning and before waxing, the pores in the wood will. E sealed against chalk and dirt penetrating, For a time anyways.
I much prefer cleaned and waxed cue's vs the alternative...... I don't really get why someone would want to put all the dirt and grime back onto clean hands, never mind making the shaft dirtier.
But to each their own.

I like a well burninshed shaft. Mine gets cleaned every couple of years. When I played 30 hours/week they got cleaned 3 times a year. A well burnished shaft stays cleaner longer. I keep my hands clean, except when I'm picking my bum or scratching my nose, or is that picking my nose...
