Cleaning my Ferrule with Alcohol, will it harm my tip?

Will cleaning my Ferrule with Alcohol harm my tip?

So I've had my new cue for about 2 weeks, and I've been cleaning the ferrule with rubbing alcohol, and cue-tips periodically. Every time I do it I get a little alcohol on the side of the tip. It isn't much and I try not to. It is a Tiger Everest tip. Do you guys think the alcohol might cause any problems with the glue that holds the layers of the tip together?

Also since were on the subject of alcohol, I've seen some people say they clean their shaft with alcohol. Is this ok to do every once in a while? Maybe every few months? My shaft is unfinished.

ferrule cleaning

I think a little bit of toothpaste would work for ya if the ferrule gets too dirty and if you get a little on the tip you can just wipe it off with a paper towel. I picked up a habit a few years ago from an old 1 pocket player and it has served me well. I pass it on for what its worth.

Before I leave the poolroom I wash my hands and dry them with a paper towel or whatever the poolroom provides. I take the damp towel and wipe down my cue - shaft 1st then the butt before puttin them back in the case. Keeps cues looking good and as a result of the cues being clean so is the case.

good luck !

if your ferrule is getting so bad it has to be cleaned everyday..... you might want to take a deeper look at how you chalk your cue...

and yes many tips are put on with a super glue like compound .. and alcohol will break that down..

relax... worry more about stroking the cue and less about cleaning it...

no one cares or notices, but you anyway.... just play the game :)

just sayin...

I didn't say every day, I said "periodically" :). I think I've done it twice in 2 weeks. I'de rather clean it when it gets a little bit of chalk on it then wait till it turns permanently blue, and I cant get it off.

As for the toothpaste, that sounds like a mess. Kinda sticky isn't it? :)

I'll try a barely damp paper towel next time, just don't really want to let any water near the shaft :)

Another option . . .

Dampen a piece of Magic Eraser (or the generic equivalent from Wal-Mart <$) and go over the ferrule only a couple of times . . . does a great job and the ferrule will look like new.

Alcohol and other petro based spirits are not good for tips . . . especially laminated ones.

Careful use of a small piece of Magic Eraser and a touch of alcohol and there will be no damage to the tip.

As stated in the threads, alcohol can affect the glue on (or in)the tip. As you clean the ferrule, if you rub the side of the tip, you will remove the "seal" finish on the sides, thereby making the tip more available to get moisture in it and change the density and the hit. F.Y.I.

You're only as good as you feel

I keep a small piece of magic eraser in my case. Just dampen it a tad, and you're good to go. Then at home I periodically use magic eraser with a LITTLE alcohol for everything. My shaft, cordland wrap, butt and blowup doll. Then I give everything a nice bikini waxing so she glistens like a shiny new Buick. That super slick feeling I get as I stroke across the glistening terrain makes putting it in the hole a joy to perform, over and over.

If you use alcohol, use DENATURED alcohol. Something in the compound is less damaging to the wood and other materials. If you use toothpaste, make sure that it is ALL WHITE. Any color in the toothpaste (red or blue) will stain your ferrule. One can get small traveling tubes for about a $, and it lasts forever. I've found ARM & HAMMER to be the best. It really is easy to use, and not messy.
