please asst me in selecting a product and or technique to clean my table. i have been thinking of buying the simonis x-1, but i dont want to spend that kind of money if it just works as well as the old fashion brush and elbow grease. will a brush followed by a damp cloth work just as well. thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Horsehair brush, brush in one direction from top to bottom towards the rack. I don't think damp cloth is necessary, it may make the cloth slower.

Try using a dry micro-fiber cloth. Just wipe down the table after every use. I've read that using a damp rag isn't necessary. you may want to do a forum search on table cleaning. There have been quite a few posts on different techniques.

Where I play and at home they vacuum the table. They use a shop vac, I just use our Dyson. Brushing certainly works but notice all the dust kicked up! Brushing is quick and easy. In a drop pocket table just brush into the pockets and then clean pockets.

Vacuum the table without a rotating brush, then wipe with a very slightly damp microfiber cloth. Ring all the water out of it.
The way most people brush the table it just moves the chalk around. The right way to brush is to herd all the chalk dust into the pockets and it works best using two brushes.

You should never use a brush on Simonis as it breaks down the threads in the woven surface and makes it fuzzy.... the cloth gets slower.
Vacuum with a mild vacuum cleaner.. not a shop vac.
A damp micro fiber cloth will work to get the surface chalk after you vacuum.
I use quick clean about once a month.

The first method IMO is the best. Vacuum then damp cloth. Don't use the cloth like you're cleaning up some dried jelly off the floor. Very Mild pressure. Don't worry about the nap, there isn't any unless of course you don't have one of the premium cloths. In that case I don't really know. Maybe vacuum, Brush then cloth In The Same Direction.
Think about whats going on. Chalk dust comes flying off the tip and lands on the cloth. It basically sits on top of the fibers. Gets ground in a little from the balls rolling over it. The vacuum takes most off but there's still some tangled in there. The very damp cloth lifts, what can be lifted, by clinging to the H2O. I've not found any better solution.
The X1 does some good but it relies on static cling. I think a good vacuum has more power. My cloth selection is a micro fiber feeling that it does a better job of getting into the nooks and crannies. Terry cloth is my second choice. A dry micro fiber cloth will be similar to X1 although X1 works better. I think. I'll need a balance to .0001 gram to figure that out for sure.
Like Rich93 said LIGHTLY DAMP. Too much wet and you get loose cloth/slow table. Too much pressure and you wear out the cloth and grind the dust into the cloth rather than picking it up.
Clean with the cloth every 2 hours or sooner for max life. Time permitting do the vacuum gig.
Don't forget the balls. They rub the bed wrong too if dirty.
My method may sound odd but simonis cloth is a wool based cloth. I vacuum the cloth not with a rotating brush, then I get a small pale with cool water and just a couple of drops of woolite, yes woolite. I don't wet the cloth by any means. I just wipe in one direction then back the other, it makes the cloth lol like new and play like new. I have had the same cloth for over 10 years and it gets a lot of use. My only problem is I live farther from dads now and I don't get over there to use it enough.
That's not what Simonis says. According to them, the cloth can be brushed.

Before they introduced their own product (the X-1) Simonis recommended brushing. Now they obviously recommend the X-1 but still state the cloth can be brushed. Vacuuming should be done with a low suction vacuum with non-rotating brush head. They also state wiping with a damp cloth is OK AFTER vacuuming.
