Cloth installation

Like the guy says in the video - others will do it different (and better).
When he staples the second end you can see there's very little stretch. We don't see how he eliminates the first side pocket slack or how he does the opposite side - plus there's no indexing shown so the video is incomplete. Overall and based on what's shown not the best of cloth installs IMO.

I have yet to find a video that is complete and accurate on you tube for cloth installation. For that matter I haven't even seen one for sale. Can you point us to one? How about producing one?

That kind of reminds me of that masked magician showing how they do magic tricks on FOX or whatever like 10 years ago. Even just being shown [on a video] how to do it wont make you do a good job on it. i know handy people that have been on the job for months that CAN do it but arnt very good at it. Table work isnt easy. Unless you want to devote an entire weekend to it dont try it. Oh dont forget the 500 dollars in unversitle tools you need to do a good a job. Even after youre done you still may have to take the thing back apart to fine tune it... if you care about playing a good game.

Thanks for mentioning all the reasons not to do it. Very helpful. You're right, not many of us have an entire weekend to devote to a complex project like that. And a few hundred dollars to spend on tools? OMG that's out of the question.

Dartman, I thought the secret Simonis DVD wasn't for "do it yourselfers"? I'm sure the information there is way too complicated for us ordinary folks to grasp. I was thinking more of a detailed video of cloth getting installed from start to finish with explanations of the intricacies along the way. Maybe with that and a few years at Stanford we could grasp it. Geez!!!

Edit: My intentions aren't to bad mouth the skill of good table mechanics. It's just out here in podunk they're few and far between so we do what we have to. My DIY tables are put together better than most I've seen done by the pretenders around here. And I know squat but would love to learn what I don't know.

Well, I'm sure with you're approach, you'll get plenty of help from the guys in the know. ;) Was I able to match your sarcasm?

It's been said before, and obviously you can tell...it ain't rocket science. Go get you a couple tools and a couple hours and I'm sure you can do just as good as any of us.

By the way, to answer the original question, I'm not very impressed with this video. It doesn't show anything really. I like the pocket liners that RKC, myself, and many other guys on here use better than the ones he used in the video. With the technique in the video, you'll either end up with a pucker in the pocket face, or you'll be able to see the slits that allow you to close the pocket in tight.

The techniques he is using to cover the rails are ok, but will results in stretch shadows on worsted cloth, and it's hard to see in the video if he's able to finish the side pocket ends tight and the corner pocket ends without wrinkles or puckers or cushion distortion.

Entire weekend to learn how to install Simonis is a cheap price to pay ( for a skill you'll have for a long time ) imo.

I you read my first response in this thread I was not sarcastic but asked a serious question. I got two responses, both of which were condescending. If those are the guys "in the know" you're talking about then I won't be holding my breath for help of any kind.

It's not secret and it's not for DIYers. People that work in the business already know how to install cloth from start to finish however their results typically vary, especially with Simonis (and other worsted cloths).

The DVD is more about improved or best-practice "techniques" in installing Simonis properly which would also lead to standardized installations as more mechanics learn what's shown.

Get ahold of RKC for a link to a thread he did some time ago on Simonis installation. Between that and the Diamond video on youtube you'll have all you need to install your cloth.

???

i didnt detect any sarcasm in dartmans response. i thouht he was attempting to direct you to a resource to help you.????

btw, unversitle=specialized. (maybe)

It was left over from another thread which is why it cleverly looked constructive. It was pretty sharp and made me smile so it's all good.

I'll repeat a bit more simply - if you know or get to know someone in the business (stores, bars, mechanics, etc) then getting your hands on the dvd shouldn't be difficult.

Rick I got your message back in the last post of the last thread about this. Remember? http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=3275238#post3275238

English, I speak it pretty well.

Since it "probably doesn't need to be spelled out any further" in your words to me back there, then to do so further here with a silly smiley is what I would consider "rubbing the wound". Subtle trolling is an art form on some of these forums it seems.

Anyway I don't really care about any of that so how about this? I give you my address and some money and you send me the DVDs? Or put me directly in touch with someone who will. I asked the guy I actually bought my 860HR from to acquire it for me and he scoffed at me and the DVD. Seems like he feels there's no tricks to Simonis and I can just do what I've always done based on information from the 1930s. Myself, I like to learn and improve when possible.
