Color of Money on tonight friday

Moselle: What you got in that case?
Vincent: In this case? Doom

I absolutely love that movie. I had a routine every week I played a tournament while I lived in Ohio. I'd watch that movie and then go play....every week.

*edit* OMG they cut that quote out of the movie!!!!!!!! It's my favorite quote of the entire movie and those bastids cut it out

I have the same thought every time I see The Color of Money --- it's the best pool movie ever, including The Hustler. Oh how I love this movie. In The Color of Money, through the eyes of Vincent, we get to see so much of pool's landscape:

small time barbox betting
bigtime barbox betting
players good enough to make it on the road
players not good enough to make it on the road
the hustling scene and its underlying morality
the perspectives and issues of the stakehorse
trashtalking and gamesmanship
dumping and its implications
mentor/student tension
the pre-tournament scene
the tournament scene
the tournament side action scene

No pool movie ever has offered such a panoramic view of the world of pool.

More information

First:

Does someone have the history (or link) to the true story of The Hustler and The Color of Money? I was trying to explain to my wife the fiction vs. non-fiction aspect of the money and the history of Fast Eddie. However, I am not knowedgeable enough. Can anyone provide the information?

Second:

Althought I've been playing pool for 40 years, I've never been to a tournament...say in Vegas or Atlantic City, etc. Is the side betting (green room) still active. Is there that much on-the-side betting by the players during, before and after the matches/trounaments?

Thanks in advance, jed

Thanks.

But I have been asking myself for a long time now every time somebody posts it is coming on TV?:

Who doesn't have the DVD of this movie? Unbelievable. Must be the young whippersnappers who have never heard of this movie and who do not watch movies of the 20th century:grin:

Walter Tevis is the author of both books of the same name. When asked if Fast Eddie was 'real', his response was,
"Fast Eddie is no more real than the tooth fairy."

I think other people came along after the fact and claimed to be inspiration for, and fashioned themselves after, the character(s) in the movies. Hope this helps.

Oh and TCOM, the book, is nothing like the movie. Not at all.

FYI, it's on right now, same channel, just ran past it....already watched last night....

Wow. I suppose I should give it longer than 5 minutes then...

But it's really hard to watch Tom Cruise. I was all set to watch the whole thing, and then I just couldn't take it anymore.

Why the hell haven't they made a special edition DVD of this yet? Damn you Scorsese!

"Whatcha got in there?"
"DOOM"
"C'mon let's play"
"Oh yeah, we're gonna have alot of fun"
(:

i love that scene

Some other great lines:

1. When the poolroom owner sets up the game for Eddie with Mozelle .....

"This is Mozelle, he plays pool."

2. After Eddie wipes out Mozelle......

"You guys going to Atlantic City?"

3. After a green room negotiation resulting in Vincent getting $1,500 to $800 on the money and two games on the wire, Vincent's comment to his girlfriend, who had finalized the deal ......

"That guy had $2,000 written all over him. You just gave him $500. And now you're gonna buy his drinks."

This movie is a feast of great one-liners.
