Commentators for Mosconi Cup 2013

There will be four of us this year. Jim, Jay, myself and another very experienced TV Commentator whose name I do not know if I am allowed to release as yet.

And here is the thing. Commentating on TV is VERY different from commentating on the internet. The internet audience is hard-core pool fanatics, the TV audience is not. So while the internet audience likes to hear commentators tell stories about Cornbread Red and Bucktooth the TV audience certainly does not as they do not know those names. They want you to stick to what is happening on the table.

TV commentators have to watch their vocabulary. You cannot speak of a 'ticky' shot unless you explain it first. Same with 'skids'. Pool has a language of its own and most of that is pretty esoteric. In the Sky box you must always remember that you may be speaking to a lot of folks who do not play pool at all. `And most of all, the timing is very different. You have to know when the ads are coming through and throw to them on time. Same with tossing the coverage to the Presenter or the MC or to a news break. You have to listen to the Producer and Director in your ears while you continue your conversation without hesitation.

In short, it is nothing at all like doing an internet match.

Let the speculation on Mystery Commentator #4 begin. Hmm, it's billed as the
20th Anniversary LEGENDS Cup.

What legendary commentator might Matchroom have up their sleeve? 1st one to guess correctly gets TrampSteamer's T-Shirt. ;)

Well, since he's going to be there already as co-captain for Team USA, my guess would be Buddy Hall. :grin-square:

Not sure how the logistics would work out being Buddy is required to tell SVB what shot to shoot and Earl what arm weights to use. ;)

Would Matchroom fly out Steve Davis perhaps? I have no clue if Steve has any commentating experience though, but surely he could do color.

Another guess might be Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Darn good guess.

I'm leaning towards a UK (Matchroom) legend cause we have the 3 J's, all from the US. Makes good biz sense, good "connection to over the pond", I think, lol.

Vegas line is even money you get TrampSteamer's T-Shirt.

They would have to fly Steve Davis out of the jungle for this one...

...And Ronnie will be playing the UK Championships the same week.

Here's Phil Yates, folks ---> HERE

OMG, it's right here before our eyes. It's you. You are the fourth "J." You will be the guest commentator at the Mosconi Cup.

The good thing about working with Matchroom is that everybody is at their place, where they can get the good work done.

I've seen so many times at tournaments people being asked to do what they shouldn't be doing, that it's really a relief for me to just put my bags down for a week in the press room and know all I have to worry about are the pictures.

In other words, commenting on TV is a professional job, and all of the commentators involved with Matchroom are always seasoned pros. Which is why it's always good.

And for the same reason, a lot of the livestream commentaries are complete s**t just because the budget is never thought of beforehand and people just grab whoever they can and get them in the booth.

The only three companies out there who do a good job are Accu-Stats, TAR and Kozoom. But at great expenses, and without any chance of making the money they should, when they are faced with so many free streams.

While some of the content might interest hardcore fans, the reality is that free streams have replaced TV shows and are lowering the quality standard of our sport a great deal.

As a fan I do like to watch some of these, but I do not think they help our sport grow. They maintain its current fan base at best.

True dat. I must admit that watching a livestream for me is a rarity. I don't have the time to spend hours and hours in front of my computer screen when I am not working. In fact, the few minutes in my life when I am *not* working, I prefer to be away from my computer altogether, to include all connectivity. No cell phones and no Internet.

There is a niche of pool enthusiasts who do enjoy live streams, but I don't believe there are enough of them to support the amount of work that goes into a live stream. Like professional pool, live streamers do it because of passion, I guess.

BTW, is "live stream" two words or one? I keep going back and forth. Merriam-Webster says two words. Hmm . . .

Who's gonna commentate this year in Vegas?
I hope for Jimmy Wych, Upstate All, Incardona, pro's from both sides...
I'd prefer not to hear Jay's voice again rolling tough words in USA Team's favor. I had enough last year.
Sorry Jay, nothing personal, just you screwed up last year with you untruthfully comment in favor of USA Team. For those who wants to fight for the cause, just rewatch the matches and listen Jay commentating...
It's just my opinion so please take it like it is.

I want to hear more from you guys, who do you think should be in the booth?

Thanks

not sure I'm getting what exactly it was that you didn't like with Jay. Was it that you felt he was rooting too much for team USA?

I find Jay's commentating very enjoyable. He has a good voice, he's def enthusiastic, and he possesses vast knowledge of the game, the players, the rules, strategy and even the history of our sport.

I don't remember specifically how his commentary went last year but I could see him getting very excited, as were pretty much all Americans, when it looked like Johnny and Team USA were about to make an historic comeback.

I could imagine in circumstances like that for it to be tough to remain entirely impartial.

One more thing comes to mind:

GO USA, USA, USA!!!!
best,
brian kc <---- also really enjoys Jerry, Billy & Danny in the booth.
