Computer tech section for the forums?

I figure that as well.. I don't have a single relative that hasn't required some PC help in the past couple months, whether it be advice on a new one or help resolving a problem. I know the tendency of many is to just ignore problems and hope they go away, for lack of a good resource for help.

So many good folks here are quick to offer their experience with pool, I figure they could benefit from our experience with PCs... It wasn't until recently that I realized just how many competent computer professionals we have frequenting this board.

I'm a technology enthusiast, part-time software engineering student, was an information systems technician for a year and a half, and now I'm a C/C++ developer... I know some things. ;)

That still doesn't justify a whole section though...

I can't read anything you write unless you #include <iostream> :D

Does expert porn surfer count as computer expert?

Jimmy,

Don't tell me that you consider your bedroom life as work? (Well, unless you shoot homemade porn)

ln -s /home/bed /dev/work ---- sad :D

I have only been a tech for a few years, but the inside of my pc glows blue. This automatically adds 20 years of experience.

edit: also, 4 fans in there lol~

Aw man.. four fans and blue lights definitely add 20 years of experience.. 5 more if two of the fans blow in and two blow out, preferrably right across the core!

And yes, porn surfer does count as computer expert.. you've dealt with more viruses than any of us! lol! We'd all still be using 1200 baud modems if the geeks of yesterday didn't need a way to get their porn faster!

Isn't that the truth! The minors of the early 90s have finally grown up and really made improvements!!!

I remember the first time I saw "Only click enter if [*click*] you are 18 years of age or older."

fact: porn and video games have pushed the advancement of processors and other computer hardware more than anything else.

I'm so proud. :D I had a lot to do with that at a younger age.

Me too :) I'll never forget finding that banana.gl video when I was 11 with my 300bps modem. It took 12 or more hours to download, but provided months of entertainment :)

So, I guess majority of the male population are actually computer experts, LOL. :D :D

No! getting an 8800gtx in a couple of weeks but not a water cooled one. not gonna make that leap just yet! mainly out of laziness if i'm honest though lol

I'm guessing with over a thousand people stopping by this forum daily, a handful of you need computer help, advice, whatever.. on a regular basis. You may not be comfortable posting about it here, given the pool only nature of things. I know we have NPR, but that doesn't lend itself to sharing the advice with others. Not many search terms would yield good results for a specific problem someone is having.

I know for a fact that some of the posters on here spend their days reading the boards in between short bouts with actual work (programmers!) and I, as one of them, would much rather spend a few minutes helping out a fellow AZ'er with a tech problem than answer some email from someone at work demanding my time lol.

Sure, there are a billion other sources of good info out there on the web, but sorting through it might be tough for anyone. You will also find a hundred different (and often opposing) answers to the same questions. It would be nice for some of us (myself included) to offer up what knowledge we do have, to those who have offered so much of their knowledge on the topics we aren't as well versed with (pool!).

Just a thought, and an offer to contribute something back to the community that has freely offered so much knowledge to advance my game.

I've got a question that maybe you can help me with about computer codes. :p

How come a website looks different on IE browser than on Firefox browser?

Is there a way to make it look the same on each browser with a code insertion maybe?

On MySpace page on the IE browser, the line endings in a column are short, making the section very long and narrow. On the Firefox browser, they line endings are longer, making the section a better fit.

Also, how do you insert a paragraph code? Each section on the MySpace page is thick, and I would like to put a blank line between paragraphs, but it is not possible.

Thanks in advance! :)

I haven't written HTML in years.. But I bet a lot of the folks on here have.. I bet if there were a section for this stuff you would have received a quick answer! lol! Barring that, the only way the right folks will likely see this is for you to post a new thread with 'need help from an HTML programmer'.

I'm betting the answer to the paragraph question involves a BR tag and maybe a nbsp, but the last time I built pages that had to be compatible with multiple browsers all we had to worry about was IE and webTV.. lets all be thankful WebTV didn't take off more than it did lol. That was 7 years ago, and I must confess I haven't written a line of HTML since.

Could anyone else help?

Get Netscape 9.0 (free download). It is based on FireFox, and has 2 display modes on it (right click menu): display as IE, display as FireFox.

go to: http://browser.netscape.com/

Insert:
<br /><br />
between paragraphs to space them out.

Or you could place <p>paragraph text</p> and the different paragraphs will be spaced out.

Thank you, Bastian. Thank you, Snapshot9. Thank you, Seymoure15074! :) :) :)

Man, it worked like a charm, the <br /><br />. :p

I appreciate the replies. I would much rather by writing code now than transcribing about polymerase chain reaction and oligonucleotide synthesis. BORING! :( :o  ;) :D

Computer question

Can anyone answer this? My wife and I have identical Mac IBooks (G4). On her computer the forums 'remember' me as a user but they do not on my computer. Yes, I always check the 'remember me' box but I still have to sign in every time I come to the site. Any ideas?

I've never even seen an IBook or Mac for that matter, but I suspect they have a setting somewhere for security to allow or disallow cookies.. that's where I would start..
